Becoming Toothless - Debbie Phillips
It is a Process
I started losing my teeth about 8 years ago, shortly after I started feeling the effects of arthritis. This year I decided to have the remainder of my teeth pulled and get dentures since they were all loose and I was having trouble eating. I found scant information on the denture process, living without teeth, how dentures are fit to my mouth, and how to live with dentures. So, I decided to start writing a very small book about it as I was going through the process and learning to live with no teeth and adjust to using dentures.
First, pick your dentist carefully. It costs money to try out a dentist and get a treatment plan and an estimate. But having a dentist who is careful and considerate and hires good dental hygienists makes all the difference. You also need to feel like you can ask questions without being rushed and be able to contact them when you have problems with any step of the process. You might be able to make do with a dentist who doesn’t have the best chair side manner. But if they make mistakes, and break teeth you could be in for a lot of pain and extra costs. I only went to two different dentists. I decided from the beginning that I didn’t want implants. Neither dentist I visited mentioned that as a possibility either.
The first dentist I went to was the least expensive in town. It is a big practice with a lot of employees and several dentists. They take care of all the Medicare patients in the area and are very busy. The people who worked there didn’t even look at me, the receptionist gave me a clipboard with forms to fill out. Then I sat and waited for a long while. When they called me back, it was not to see the dentist but to pay. Then they sent me back out front. Eventually, they called me back, took me into a cubicle with a curtain and put me in front of an X-ray machine, and took X-rays. They didn’t tell me what they were doing, they just positioned me and did it. Then I was conducted into another cubicle where someone looked at the x-rays on a computer screen. The dentist came in and said I need all my teeth pulled (Like I didn’t already know that) This is what it will cost for the extractions and dentures... but you must do all the extractions today, all at once. You can get financing. I had not been to the dentist in over 25 years. Being there with all the people not even looking at me was already giving me anxiety. I had decided I was going to start the process, but I didn’t want to do it all at once. I agreed to let them pull the 5 bottom teeth I had left. I thought I could have the bottom teeth done and get dentures for the bottom then do the top. They didn’t tell me otherwise. Just sent me to the cashier to pay for the bottom extractions.
