    Obesity

Obesity is a complex disease involving an excessive amount of body fat.

In obesity the weight is the symptom not the root cause. It may be due to hormone imbalance. There are 600 types of hormones in our body. These are the products of various glands of our body. The activities of glands are control by the Thyroid and thyroid is controlled by pituitary gland.

Hence dieting is not the solution of managing the weight.

Fuels of the body are also responsible for obesity. The fuels are – i) Sugar & ii) Fats

There two types of fats in our body. They are – i) Visceral fat & ii) Subcutaneous (on skin)

MORE CALORIES, LESS BURN = WEIGHT GAIN which is known as obesity.

Carbohydrate can also be responsible for weight gain if not metabolized effectively.

    •  Short term stress cause appetite loss due to secretion of corticotrophin releasing hormone and Adrenaline hormone

    •  Chronic stress release Cortisol that increases appetite.

    •  Cortisol breaks down Muscles protein into sugar (glucose). When this sugar is not completely used, it accumulates in the form of Fat around abdomen. Cortisol, the primary stress hormone, increases sugars (glucose) in the bloodstream, enhances your brain's use of glucose and increases the availability of substances that repair tissues. Cortisol also curbs functions that would be nonessential or harmful in a fight-or-flight situation.

    •  Chronic stress leads to comfort eating

    •  Metabolism system - Metabolism is the process by which the body changes food and drink into energy. During this process, calories in food and drinks mix with oxygen to make the energy the body needs. Even at rest, a body needs energy for all it does’ – Higher the Metabolism – Thinner the person & Lower the Metabolism – The person is Fatty.

    •  Anabolism –Anabolism is a biochemical process in metabolism where the simple molecules combine to generate complex molecules.

    •  Catabolism - Catabolism is the breakdown of complex molecules. Catabolism is the breakdown of complex substances to their constituent parts (glucose, amino acids and fatty acids) which form substrates for metabolic pathways.

Metabolic rate – Minimum amount of energy required by the body to maintain life at complete physical and mental rest in post absorptive state.

    3 Myths about obesity –

    •  Crash Dieting

    •  Rigorous workout & Gyming

    •  Say no to Fats

    Gut microbiome

The kind of bacteria present in our gut determines our health. And the condition of the gut is determined by the kind of food that we eat.

    Glands & Hormones

The functions of certain hormones when get distorted directs fat accumulation in different parts of the body.

    Hypothyroidism –

It is the under secretion of hormones secreted by Thyroid glands. Thyroid gland is responsible for normal metabolism of the body and the rate at which body burns the food to get energy.

In Hypothyroidism, cravings for refined carbohydrates increases which gets converted into fat & Cholesterol.

PCOD (Poly Cystic Ovarian Disease) –

It is the result of Insulin resistance.

High insulin levels increase production of Androgens which triggers weight gain.

    Sleep –

Lack of adequate sleep interferes with fat burning while sleeping.

Also, inadequate sleep increases insulin resistance.

    •  It leads to Fatty liver – condition in which fat starts to deposit in the liver.

    •  It can be reversed by intermittent fasting that means 16 hours fasting and eating during the remaining 8 hours.

    What happens when we fast?

    •  During fasting glucose levels are dipped and pancreas now secretes another hormone called Glucagon to breakdown the glucose stored in muscles and liver in the form of Glycogen.
