Fan Theory - Daniel Scott
Foreword
I've always been a curious soul, drawn to the mysteries that lie hidden beneath the surface. As far back as I can remember, I've spent hours poring over books, movies, and TV shows, searching for clues, inconsistencies, and hidden meanings. It's not enough for me to simply enjoy a story; I need to understand it, to dissect it, to weave my own narrative within its framework.
This insatiable curiosity eventually led me down the rabbit hole of fan fiction and eventually, fan theories. I discovered a vibrant community of like-minded individuals, all united by a passion for uncovering the secrets buried within our favorite fictional worlds.
And not only that. In my personal experiences engaging in these communities, I have observed a growing disinterest in critical thinking and depth regarding the consumption of media as an art, and I would like to change that.
The following is a short collection of some of my favorite personal theories on which I have pondered over the years. I want to share them with you. So, prepare to embark on a mind-bending adventure that will leave you questioning everything you thought you knew about your favorite stories.
Who knows, maybe you’ll learn something new... and hopefully you’ll have a few chuckles along the way.
Pee-Wee's Big Adventure (1985- Tim Burton): Each Significant Heart-to-Heart Encounter Pee-Wee has is with a Ghost and Pee-Wee Helps Them Move On.
Oh no! Someone has stolen Pee-wee's bicycle! Nothing will stop the adorable, resourceful, and debonair Pee-Wee Herman from getting his bicycle back! Not even the spirits themselves. As it seems Pee-Wee's quest to retrieve his bicycle becomes something like a spiritual journey, one of self reflection as Pee-Wee grapples with own identity sans bicycle. Without it, Pee-Wee feels less than, as the vehicle he designed helps define him and his popularity.
On this journey are subtle references to death and the afterlife that are petered throughout the film. From Pee-Wee stopping at Dia De Los Muertos, to the biker gang named Satan's Helpers... the clues are hinting that Pee-Wee's Big Adventure is crossing between the realms of the living and the dead. If we evaluate these clues, I think it becomes clear that Pee-Wee is helping lost souls find peace, the way he himself feels lost without the bike.
Some time after starting his spiritual quest, Pee-Wee comes across Mickey. A rough, gruff escaped convict with the shiniest bracelets you've ever seen. Mickey takes Pee-Wee along the same road he crashes his car on while on the lamb, winding and dangerous he guides Pee-Wee safely though and through PeeWee's acceptance of innocence and companionship, obtains what he needs to pass on. Through this, Pee-Wee learns to address his aggression and violent side with his attachment to the bike.
After this, Large Marge is the most obvious apparition- the film labels her as such. The local populace is fearful and avoidant of Marge and any stories about her. When Pee-Wee naively accepts a ride, and listens to her gruesome untimely ending, she finally completes her cargo run and transports Pee-Wee to his destination. Thus, she is able to pass
