    Confused Hearts - Ruby Raynes

    CHAPTER 1

Arriving at work early , Renda began typing the letters requested late yesterday. She sat in the quietness for thirty minutes before the other workers began showing up. Renda’s supervisor came in, giving her a quick glance and went right to her boss’s office, staring at her cellphone. Mrs. Sexton talked with Lee for almost an hour. Renda noticed the discussion seemed quite serious and she could tell Lee was pushing her point of view. Lee finally rushed out of the office and went straight to her own office, sat down staring at her desk for several minutes. Dreading what she had to do, Lee slowly got up again, went to her door and asked, Renda, can you come in here a minute?

Renda looked up and smiled as she rose from her typing to head for Lee’s office. Lee moves back to her desk as Renda comes in. Renda sat down with her notepad. Ok, I’m ready for your instructions for the day. She smiled at her friend, waiting for the day’s instructions.

Lee smiled and calmly said, Renda, I hate to say this, but I have to let you go. Renda’s face fell. I love your work, I really do. I don’t know why this happened, and I went to bat for you, but Mrs. Sexton wasn’t budging.

Renda took a deep breath, trying to fight back tears, and let it out slowly. Well, okay, I appreciate you fighting for me. I wish I knew why, but I understand it wasn’t your choice. Do you want me to leave right now, or at the end of the day?

Lee muttered, Right now, from what she said. They have a replacement coming in today which seems strange to me. Renda nodded and got up to leave then Lee said, Hey, meet me tonight, it’s our night out, I have something to talk to you about on a personal matter.

Renda barely grinned. Sure, I need the night out now; I’ll see you at eight, as usual.

Perfect, hold your chin up. You can do better than this job anyway, Lee said, as she hugged Renda, then let her go pack her things up to leave. Just as Renda had her box packed, she turned to leave, almost running into Mrs. Sexton. She just smiled at her as if nothing was happening, then she left the building. Mrs. Sexton watched Renda leave, surprised she smiled so pleasantly at her.

Mrs. Sexton stepped into Lee’s office. I’m surprised Renda smiled at me like she always has. Mrs. Sexton pointed back in Renda’s direction. That woman has class.

Lee smiled at her boss. Renda was the best secretary I’ve had. She’s professional and doesn’t let things get to her like that. Although she wanted to know why she was fired from work, and I had no answer.

Mrs. Sexton sighed. It came from higher up. In my opinion, you know who found a younger thing to replace her. She shook her head in disapproval of things herself as Lee pressed her lips together. I have your vacation request here; it seems you have a month built up. Lee nodded. You’re in luck. This is the right time of year to take off, and so I’ve approved it. Run while you can and don’t answer your phone. And I didn’t say that. Mrs. Sexton smiled as Lee giggled in happiness.

Thank you so much, because I didn’t realize the trip I paid for wasn’t refundable. Since this is Friday, after today I won’t answer my phone either. Mrs. Sexton winked at her and walked out the door, going back to her office. Lee giggled to herself, knowing the new woman was coming in and someone else had to train her now. Lee got on the computer and confirmed her trip, then thought of Renda. Lee then looked at her email and responded to several of them before leaving work.

The day ended as Lee got everything up to date and left instructions for anyone taking over for her while she was off. Lee even thought of looking for a new career herself while on vacation. She ran home feeling free. She immediately looked for a new job close to where the vacation was supposed to be as she ate her dinner. After sending her resume to a couple of companies, she then got ready to meet up with Renda.

Renda sat at home watching TV after getting online to start her unemployment benefits. At least she’d be getting maximum benefits, but needed to make a move to a cheaper place now. Renda pondered moving out of state, which would be far cheaper than California. With the maximum benefits, that would go a lot farther out of state with cheaper rent. A thought hit Renda, so she picked up her cell and made a phone call. As a familiar voice answered, Renda said, Hello Ann, I got some bad news. Ann, on the other end, spoke softly and asked what happened. I got let go from work today, so if you don’t mind, please stay there for a while with the family. I’ll call you back as soon as I resettle. Ann spoke with her a bit and wished her well. I’ll send you some money. Once I move, I’ll let you know where, and thank you so much. I love you. Then she hung up. Renda looked at her wristwatch, then began getting ready for the evening out with Lee. She smiled; Lee had become a great friend even before she worked at the same company. It was hard now days to make friends, so she cherished Lee’s friendship. Now dressed and heading out the door, she looked around her place. She sighed, then left, locking the door behind her.

Lee headed for the door, then stopped and picked up her laptop to take with her. She had an idea that she wanted to discuss with Renda; she grinned as she left the house with a spring in her step. Lee arrived first at the club, so she got a drink and sat at a small table waiting for Renda.

Five minutes later Renda arrived heading for their usual table. The place was crowded being Friday night, and the businesspeople filled the club talking business. Renda saw Lee looking for her, so she waved, seeing Lee smile back at her. Lee got up, hugged her with a concerned look. How are you doing?

It’s just sinking in. I was thinking I should move out of the state and go somewhere smaller in the country. I miss the quietness and fresh air. Renda paused. I guess it was good timing. My roommate just left on vacation a few days ago.

Lee almost bounced in her seat with a huge smile. Hey, I was thinking of looking for a new job as well. I even applied for a couple up in Montana. Renda laughed at her excitement. I’m tired of California and its earthquakes, plus I have a month off for vacation starting Monday.

That’s wonderful to get an entire month off, Lee.

As Lee sipped her drink, staring at a beautiful woman, her best friend. She loved Renda and the way she dressed so elegantly at all times and has the best heart. With a sigh, Lee then went on. I booked a place to stay at, but I want you to take it. Renda’s eyes lit up as Lee talked. It’s paid for, and the meals are included. It’s on a horse ranch in Montana. This would be great to start a new time in a new life. It will give you time to relax and rethink things over.

But Lee, it’s your vacation. I can’t pay you back for that kind of vacation. Renda gulped a huge drink of her rum and coke, almost choking on it. What about you? Where are you going if you give me this deal?

Lee leaned in closer to talk over the noise. I don’t want you to pay me back. Count it as a severance package. The jobs I applied for are close to the area so we can get together. All you have to do is say you are Lee Hudson; they don’t need to know any difference. Lee opened her laptop and pointed. Look here, Renda, this is the place. It’s in a beautiful setting. Renda leaned over and looked at the Ranch biting her lip, feeling excitement growing. You have always avoided dating and kept yourself so busy for so many years. I want you to take a break and go meet the people. You might find a job in the area also and just move there if you like it.

It’s beautiful up there, that’s for sure, but I don’t know if I can take your vacation from you. It just doesn’t feel right you give this away, Renda said. You don’t owe me anything. I actually owe you for getting me this last job. It was a great five years working with you and you have been the best boss. It paid for all the extra things I wanted to do.

Lee had to think how to get Renda to take this vacation because she had other plans for herself, so she confessed it. You know I went on a dating site. Renda nodded. Well, I met someone that I want to see, and we want to meet. I don’t want to waste the Ranch package because it’s nonrefundable, so please take it. For once, let someone do something for you. Renda sat back and exhaled, thinking about it all. Lee waited a moment, seeing she was thinking hard on it. You’ll be getting a paid vacation and you’ll be doing me a favor. You said you owe me, right? Now take this for me. I’m expected there on Tuesday to check in.

Tuesday! I need to pack my place up and get a truck to move it into storage first. It alarmed Renda at the suddenness. I guess I can move fast. My neighbors will help me, I think.

I’ll come and stay with you this weekend and help you pack up your place. We can make it a pajama packing party. Lee giggled as she watched Renda’s expression. So, will you go if I help you? I know your roommate left too, even though you didn’t tell me until now. Now’s the time to go.

Renda thought it over as she gulped her drink down, getting tipsy. Since I owe you so much, yes, I’ll go and take your vacation. I can move my things to Montana and put it in storage there, I guess. Lee smiled, agreeing it would be a good idea. All I have to do is say I’m you?

Yes, that’s all, and enjoy yourself. You might even look for work there and we can be close together if it all works out, Lee said, as she got excited. You can email me every day and let me know how it’s going. The only thing is that Mike, one owner, is a bit gruff and a loner. Ignore him or just talk to him like you always talk to people. Let him get over his own attitude if you get one.

    CHAPTER 2

Renda stared into space , wondering what she meant about the man Mike. The only difference is you’re so beautiful and I’m just, well, attractive as it’s been said. Have they seen a picture of you by chance? Are they expecting someone elegant and sophisticated, which I am not? It puzzled Renda a bit about the deal.

Lee laughed at her. You are beautiful. Don’t put yourself down. No, I haven’t sent a picture, and everyone is a city slicker to them unless you live on a ranch or farm. That shouldn’t bother you what they think, just go to the picnics or whatever they do and make some friends. You might find one that will give you a lead to a new job, or you might tip me off to a job.

Okay, I’ll do it and go up there. I was thinking about that area anyway and it will give me time to look for a job at the same time for thirty days. Renda gave in to Lee’s pleading eyes. First thing in the morning, I’ll get a truck set up and boxes to pack. It will take about seventeen hours driving at least to get there. Which means we’ll stop for one night to rest. You come on over when you get up and around tomorrow.

Lee jumped up, happy and excited as she patted Renda’s hand. I’ll be back in a minute. Lee headed to the restroom while texting someone. A few minutes later, Lee made her way back from the restroom. She stopped and talked to a man then went back to the table. I’ll pack my things up for the trip also. I’ll stay with you to pack the truck and then follow you to Montana. How does that sound?

Perfect, we can leave together and arrive at the same time, so I’ll know where you are as well. I hope this man you’re going to see is worth the trip for you. Renda paused, lifted an eyebrow, then asked, Where are you going to stay? Surely not with a man you don’t know.

Lee saw the concern on Renda’s face, and half waved her hand. I rented a room in town with Dana’s parents. They are like family to me. I used to go to their house all the time when we were kids. They didn’t want me to pay, but I know they need the extra income right now. I’m going to help them with their business and do some marketing for them, while I’m getting to know Dexter in person. Lee continued talking to calm Renda down for a bit.

Whew, you had me worried for a minute there. That’s so nice of you to help them out and it could lead you into starting your own business. I know you’re more than smart enough to have your own business. Renda was boosting Lee’s confidence at the same time.

Lee tilted her head. I’ll think about starting a business if you think about publishing those books you’ve written. Renda smiled at Lee’s bargaining. After all, why write a book if you won’t put them out there for the world to read? Lee laughed at Renda hitting back with love.

Renda looked at her watch for a second. We better go, get our rest because the next couple of days are going to be pushing hard to get things done. Bring all the newspapers you can find to wrap the glass items with.

They both rose to leave and weaved their way through the crowd. Stepping outside of the club, Lee said, I’ll pack for the trip, bring it with me and get you as many boxes as I can with newspapers. Pack your suitcases tonight so you don’t pack up what you’ll need while on vacation. Renda agreed as she hugged Lee and then they went separate ways to their vehicles.

On the way home, Renda stopped at a large store, went in, and bought lots of packing tape, and asked if they had any boxes. Luckily, a later delivery came in and there were plenty of boxes of many sizes available to choose from. Renda took as many as she could get in her Explorer of various sizes, then went on home. She then carried as many boxes in as she could in one trip into the apartment. Then hunted for her black marker, preparing for the next day, and she even began packing.

Lee arrived home and got on the laptop, emailing her arrival date to the Ranch. She thought for a moment about what she had done to Renda before continuing. Then she emailed, I may arrive late Monday night, so I’ll stay in town, so expect me Tuesday morning or even the afternoon. I’m excited to meet you and see the Ranch life you have talked so much about. It will be great to get out of California for a month, hear the silence, smell the pine trees and see wild horses running free. I admit it will be a world of difference from what I know, but new experiences make life worth living. Take care and I’ll see you soon. Lee.

The next morning Renda got up early, looked around her place, thankful she wasn’t one of those people who had all kinds of stuff to pack up. Her place was nicely decorated, but not totally cluttered with junk, as she calls it. Sitting down to drink her coffee, she searched for a moving truck close by. Finding one, she called, asking the price for the distance and sizes. She chose the larger truck to be safe with a tow bar to pull her Explorer. After drinking her second cup of coffee, she got up and packed her suitcases with all the clothes she could think of she’d need for thirty days. Her day was now busy packing boxes as she waited for Lee to arrive.

MIKE AT THE RANCH GOT up to get his coffee, and then he sat down to look at the emails. One struck him so he opened it to find the email from Lee. Gloria walked in to get her coffee, quickly glancing at Mike on the computer. She gulped hard as she sipped her coffee. Mike’s deep voice asked, What is this email from a woman named Lee? She’s coming here for thirty days. Why didn’t I know about this?

I, ah, put the cabin up for rent to see if anyone would be interested. Gloria muttered as she drank her coffee, avoiding Mike’s stare. She paid a handsome price, and it will help a lot. I have the cabin ready for her. I want to see if starting a business would work and one guest will be a test.

Mike made a clicking noise with his mouth as he glared at Gloria, thumping the keyboard. It’s a woman? I guess I have to show her around and be pleasant, and all that stuff I don’t have time for. Haven’t we talked about this before? Gloria moved her head from side to side, shrugged, then nodded. Mike slammed the laptop lid down. Damn it! Then he left without eating breakfast and disappeared on his horse.

Gloria sighed, deeply relieved. That was all he said. She turned the laptop around and looked at all the emails, answering a few, then blocking most of them. After Mike didn’t return, she ate a bowl of cereal in silence, thinking about Lee meeting Mike. Would he be a total jerk or personable enough for them to even talk? It weighed on her mind, but it excited her at the same time to have company around to talk with.

Lee got her response to her email back. We look forward to seeing you too; we have beautiful weather now the snow is melting off. The birds are singing, and the animals are moving about, celebrating the spring. The winds are whispering a new time has come in the land. There will be babies born so you can see them as they grow over the next month. You be careful on your trip here; we’ll see you Tuesday. Signed, Gloria and Mike. Lee read the return email and smiled, hoping all would go well.

Renda packed what she brought up last night, then went down and carried more boxes in. Lee showed up in time to give Renda a break with some cupcakes for breakfast. Renda laughed at Lee and said, I thought I had a sweet tooth until I met you and yet you keep that perfect figure.

We need the sugar rush to keep us going so I brought enough to last all day and half the night, Lee said as she laughed with Renda. They ate, then went right into packing everything they could in one day. By evening, they ran out of boxes, so the women went to find more boxes again. Lee pointed off to the right. Over there, there’s so many boxes it should be enough to finish your place. I can’t believe you have so much stuff.

Renda pulled up to the large container of boxes and got out to look them over. I didn’t think I had that much, but.... There’s plenty here but be careful some of them have food in them, we don’t want those, they have to be clean. Lee helped find good clean boxes that were easy to carry, and then they loaded the Explorer up with as many as Renda thought she needed to finish up. Renda stepped back to look at the load, then grabbed a few extra boxes. I think that should finish it up, if not at least we know where to get some more. Lee agreed as they got back in the car and headed back to pack some more.

You know we’ve done well packing what we have. It seems you really know how to organize things. I’d bet you could easily run an office or train people on how to organize their life. That could be a business for you to start somewhere, Lee bragged about Renda, making her blush.

I never thought of that before. Having been a secretary for so long, I just got lost in it, I guess. Renda thought about the idea. I wished I would’ve been able to go to college like you did and learn a better-paying trade. She paused. I’ve found out, though, that an excellent secretary will be held back from advancing.

You’re right, because it is hard to find an excellent secretary that can even alphabetize files. Crazy, but it’s true, so when you get a good one, the boss doesn’t want to lose you, Lee admitted it. We work for a splendid company, but if you look around, everyone is stuck because no one advances. That’s why I want out. I can’t move up unless someone above me quits or retires and I’m not waiting any longer. Lee paused and thought for a moment. The benefits are good and investing starts sooner than most companies. You got five years in so your vested, I’d check to see if you can roll your funds or if you lost it since you were let go. I want to quit so I can keep mine and roll it over.

If I’m lucky, I didn’t lose it since some companies let you keep it. I’ll check it as soon as we get to Montana. I also need to see if I get my vacation pay since I haven’t taken the time off. Renda said as she kept packing her box. Lee agreed and told her it should be in her last check.

The two had a good time talking about what they wanted to do in Montana, agreeing to meet and go out dancing. They both agreed it wouldn’t hurt to meet the men or some cowboys and try new things. It was probably too late for skiing, but all the fun in the sun things were available. Renda just didn’t want to buy western clothes or boots for thirty days. Lee laughed at her and told her she had turned prissy too, making Renda laugh.

At dawn, Sunday morning, Renda and Lee went to pick up the moving truck and tow bar. They had to wait an hour for the truck to come from another location, making Renda edgy. As the truck came in, she inspected it thoroughly, reporting all dents and dings so she wouldn’t get charged for things she didn’t do. Once Renda paid up, she drove the truck as Lee followed her back to the apartment. Lee used her power of persuasion to get the men next door to help load the truck as quickly as possible.

Renda laughed at how Lee could get men to do almost anything. All she had to do was bat her green eyes and flip her blonde hair around to get men to help.

It was only a few hours later as the last piece of furniture was loaded. Renda put her suitcases in the Explorer, her shoes, and her toiletries. A man helped Renda with getting the Explorer on the tow bar. An hour later, the two women were on the road by morning, heading for Montana. Being already tired, they drove as long as they could. Then had to stop, rest and eat a good meal before hitting the road early Monday. Lee followed her to monitor the Explorer, and they drove all day until they had to stop and rest again late that night. Waking early and aching, they drove the rest of the way through until they reached Montana as calculated.

Lee and Renda stopped to eat in a diner, asking about any storage units open all night. The waitress told them of the only one in the area, then turned to ask a man about it. Wayne, isn’t there a storage unit place up the road that’s open all the time?

A man turned around to the women. "Yep, it’s also the drop off place for that truck there too, so
