    Prevailing Prayers - Dorothy Roberts

    Acknowledgements

I thank God for allowing me to share my prayer journey, and I am grateful for my husband Richard Alan Roberts Sr, who has always encouraged me to be my best in the kingdom of God. I thank God for being born in a loving and supportive family.

I thank God for my parents Etheridge and Dorothy Wiggins. I thank God for the values they instilled in me as a young woman that have guided my life.

I thank God for the women of prayer who poured in me and walked before me as honorable women of prayer and intercession.

    Introduction

People have different views, opinions, and experiences concerning prayer. Although prayer is the church’s number one arsenal to fight Satan, prayer and intercession are fought with arduous contention in some fellowships.

I came up in a church where we always prayed. It was only until I joined another denomination, and I was baptized in the Holy Ghost (Spirit), that I began my journey of understanding prayer.

I was raised in a Christian home; my parents were praying people. There were also four women who were instrumental in my life as intercessors. I learned the importance of prayer from my parents and these powerful women of prayer.

Now that I have lived a few decades, I have recognized I caught the prayer mantle. As I share my journey, I hope it will answer questions for someone who carries the mantle but needs direction.

We are in the end of times. The antichrist spirit is running rampant in our families, communities, churches, governments, and the world. We who carry the mantle of prayer, and intercessions are the only ones to restrain Satan until Jesus comes back for His bride.

While reading my prayer journey, I pray it will help you to identify your assignment in prayer. There is a different anointing on us who carry the prayer mantle, and it is time to take our positions. God hears everyone that prays. But if you carry the mantle of prayer, a demand is placed on our lives now to come forth and pray.

While reading this book, examine your heart and see if my testimony mirrors your life; come out from hiding and embrace the assignment.

Prayer: Father God, ignite a passion in me to pray. Give me the boldness to embrace my assignment. Awaken me to a new place in my prayer life. Give me understanding of my assignment. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Awakening to the Call to Pray

    Chapter 1

    What Is Prayer?

Prayer according to the Strong’s Concordance in the Greek translation is the word "proseuche" (pros-yoo-khat), which means worship, an oratory chapel, and supplicate.

So, prayer is worship, talking to God, and making supplication and intercession to God. However, prayer also involves listening and discerning the mind of God through the written Word.

Prayer involves listening and the Holy Spirit guiding me into instructions in righteousness. The Holy Spirit fills my heart with the knowledge of God’s will through the Word; so I can pray and intercede according to His will.

The Word of God shows me through the Old and New Testament writings how and what is the mind of God. I must pray with knowledge and understanding in all situations in life.

Effective prayers can only be offered as a sweet savor to God as we learn the will and ways of God through the study of His Word and the ministry of the Holy Spirit. God’s Word is truth. I pray with confidence, because if I ask anything according to His will, He hears me, and I have the petitions I desired of Him in prayer. (1 John 5: 14-15, KJV).

Growing in wisdom and revelation of God’s Word has allowed me, through the aid of the Holy Spirit, to learn to pray the mind and will of God when I pray.

The more I became a student of the Word and studied with understanding, my prayer life increased exponentially. I have found over the years that praying the Word of God and learning the laws of how the kingdom of God operates have increased my faith. I developed over time a new love for talking to God through prayer.

Every believer is asked to pray; however, every believer does not carry the prayer mantle. It took me years to understand my assignment. I hope sharing my experiences will help answer some of the questions you may have about prayer.

Sometimes prayer for me just means being quiet, sitting, and hearing from the Holy Spirit before I say a word. Worship music during prayer usually ushers me into the presence of God, and I get refreshed as I let the cares of this life drop off my mind. I become better acquainted with God’s ways and His voice.

I also know that God is not concerned about the tunes of the words I lift to Him with my own voice in my quiet worship and prayer times. I can assure you only God could receive my worship.

Enter into his gates with thanksgiving and into his courts with praise, be thankful unto him and bless his name.

    –Psalms 100:4, KJV

Prayer is also a heart issue. When I kneel and take my position in prayer, my heart will speak first. I found I must practice coming into God’s presence first with thanksgiving and worship; then I make my request known to Him.

I must practice discipline because when I come before God in prayer, I want to always worship and honor Him first before I start talking and asking. That is just respect.

I was reared in a family of twelve total with my father and mother. In the morning, I dared not get up and not say good morning or greet my father, mother, and my siblings before I started my day. That was just common courtesy in my home. I hope that was the protocol in your home too. It was a gesture of respect and honor for one another.

I must not get so relaxed with God that I don’t reverence Him when coming into His presence. I have been in places where people overlook you and even talk over you, but God has to always be reverenced.

My attitude is, from this perspective, that a big God that created all I can see and more would want a personal relationship with me.

I think it is more of a wonder that He would allow the Holy Spirit to live inside of human flesh. I am just voicing my view of my perspective in approaching our Father.

When I enter my intimate place with God, it is good breeding ground for prayer. When I am burdened down, I must remember God already knows what I need before I ask, and He will gently wrap me in His arms and love me until I can share my heart. These are the times I just mediate on His goodness.

Life can sometimes deliver us some hard blows; however, God’s shoulders are big enough to handle a universe of sons and daughters at one time.

When I look at things from a higher view, I see just how valuable prayer is to the believer. At first, legalism had me with the mindset that prayer was only rigid rules and regulations that I needed to follow to be heard by God.

My desire is to destroy that yoke of fear and intimidation about prayer around your neck. Prayer is a time of freedom, rest, and peace in God’s arms, and that is essential for me to survive and thrive as a New Testament believer.

The things I’ve shared are just foundational principles to fostering a healthy prayer life. I pray the eyes of your understanding will be enlightened and you will find a more intimate place of prayer.

I have discovered that this was the beginning of my prayer assignment that God had entrusted me with. It can be a place of confusion if you don’t understand the fundamental joys of prayer.

Prayer became enjoyable as I developed a relationship with God through the Holy Spirit. I can give you a good analogy of how I saw this evolution. When I was a little child, I saw my father as this big authoritative figure.

We had order in our house, and I was always conscientious of not breaking the rules because there were consequences. This shaped my view when I first got saved. I saw God as an authoritative, untouchable God with a list of dos and don’ts.

Meanwhile, as I grew into adulthood, my fellowship with my earthly father changed. The man I viewed as a disciplinary father, I now formed a loving relationship. We could laugh and talk and enjoy each other’s company.

I remember days of fellowshipping and laughter, and time just seem to go so quickly. I would stay all day, but when I
