Ribo Quadrilobe: The Healer is Judged

Ribo Quadrilobe is a Government Investigator. He is also one of the most advanced robots. He will study a case, take notes, come to a conclusion and pass that conclusion on to a Judge. That Judge will always accept the findings of these advanced robots because they are so thorough and always come to the same conclusion as a would a Judge.

In this era, some Robots are trying to become Human. Ribo is not one of those. He thinks there is nothing better than being a Robot. There are plenty of jokes in this book. But, they're wasted on Ribo.

Hannah Harvester is a Medical Doctor. She is also a Spiritual Healer. A lot of her patients get well, almost miraculously. But, it's forbidden to practice spiritual healing on medical patients. 

So, Ribo Quadrilobe is sent to investigate. Read the book to follow the investigation.

The Case

MY NAME IS Ribo Quadrilobe.  And I am the investigator on Case 3457-PS-007.  This case accuses Dr. Hannah Harvester of using Spiritual Healing in the Medical Profession.  If found guilty, Dr. Harvester will surely be in violation of World Directive #40 (WD40) which keeps spiritual practices separate from physical practices – such as medicine. 

WD40 allows those who work in physical practices to believe and even pray (and/or meditate) while at these practices.  But, it forbids them from using belief and prayer (and/or meditation) to augment (or as a substitute for) the physical processes in their work. 

While there is a lot of gray area in WD40, and most cases get thrown out for lack of evidence, using spiritual healing is clearly in conflict with practicing as a doctor.  Dr. Harvester’s patients have a much higher recovery rate than normal.  Dr. Harvester has confessed to a belief in spiritual healing and to having some ability in that area. 

So, the question is, did she use that ability in spiritual healing to augment her patients’ recovery rate?  That is what I have to investigate.

If found guilty, Dr. Harvester will have to choose whether to be a medical doctor or a spiritual healer.  Whichever she chooses, she will be made an example of, in the other profession; so that nobody will violate WD40 again.  She’ll also have to do some community work in whichever professional community she winds up in.

As for the patients which were healed, the World Government (WG) has no wish to unheal anybody.  The WG will however, issue strict warnings to them to not elaborate on how they were healed. 

These warnings are, of course, unenforceable.  But they will be issued nonetheless if Dr. Harvester is found in violation of WD40.

Case 3457-PS-007 means that this is the 7th Physical / Spiritual case this year – 3457.  The format of the case numbers is yyyy-tt-nnn where yyyy is the year, tt is the case type, and nnn is the number of that type of case in that year. 

The other six PS cases were thrown out for lack of evidence.  This was the investigators’ conclusion as well as the judges’. 

This case already has more evidence than any of those.  So perhaps we’ll come to a different conclusion.

My Role

AS WORLD GOVERNMENT Investigator (WGI) 11R4-25, it is my privilege to handle case 3457-PS-007.  I believe this case will set a precedent on how other PS cases are investigated.  That is the purpose for my keeping this log.

I am not the judge in this case, only the investigator.  However as a class 4 Robot (R4), I will do a most thorough and unprejudiced investigation.  Judges almost always take the findings of R4’s
