About this ebook

In Search of a Right-Brained Computer available at Amazon, is the story of my search to find a computer for my right-brained wife. Since I'm left brained, this was perhaps a futile attempt. Yet I pursued it. What I found was what makes right- and left-brained people ask the same questions while asking different questions. I'm left brained. I want to know the story of a computer before I buy it. But to me, its story means, What's it like right now? What are its features? To my wife its story means, What was its history? What will it be like in the future? I explore each of the main questions one might ask when purchasing a computer and show how left-and right-brained people mean different things when they ask that question. I then go through a computer system I designed in an attempt to design a right-brained computer. Then I analyze where it came close to meeting its mark and where it fell short. I throw in some computer humor along the way.

While this book is about designing a computer that works the way you do, it's also about understanding people.

    The Story

Let me tell you a story ...

A picture containing indoor, cat, wall, cabinet Description automatically generated A person wearing glasses and smiling at the camera Description automatically generated I love computers. I think the way they do, i.e. very left-brained.

My wife, well let me put it this way, does not have a love affair with computers.

Sure, she can use computers, she used to program mainframes in FORTRAN using punch cards. If you don’t know what mainframes or FORTRAN or punch cards are, don’t worry about it – I can guarantee that you’ll never have to know. Just suffice it to say, that those terms refer to heavy duty computer use.

So, why doesn’t she love computers? They don’t think the way she does, which is very right-brained.

On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the highest, when it comes to being left-brained, I’m a 6, but I can be a 10 if I have to. When it comes to being right-brained, my wife is also a 6, and I’m certain she could lean towards a 10 if she wanted to. So, we’re not extremely left-brained or right-brained, except from each other’s perspective.

Since I love computers, I’d like my wife to love computers or at least not get so frustrated with them. So, for the past 30+ years, I’ve been searching for a computer she could love. But since all computers and computer systems are designed by left-brained people, I’ve come up short.

I might have been dissuaded me from my pursuit of the elusive right-brained computer, but my love for her, keeps me going.

So, what is a right-brained computer? In order to answer that question, imagine for
