Kitchen Catastrophe: A Tale of Breakfast Mishaps (contos, #1)

Vivian tried to get herself together, but she couldn't manage it.

Everything kept slipping from her hands, and preparing breakfast took longer than expected.

In a hurry, she attempted to make sandwiches while the omelet was cooking on the stove,

but this combination of tasks ended in disaster.

And then, from the bathroom, Nicholas shouted.

    Are you asleep in there?

    What's burning now?

The woman startled and rushed to the stove.

Lifting the lid, she realized that the dish was hopelessly ruined.

She didn't even have time to clean up the spoiled omelet because her displeased husband

    had already invaded her territory.

As usual, he didn't hold back his words to vent his anger.

    You clumsy creature.

Is it really so hard for you to make a decent omelet at least once in your life?

Should I send you to cooking classes, or is your bird brain incapable of grasping even

    the simplest recipe?

Wiping his wet hair with a towel, the husband did it so vigorously that droplets scattered

    all over the room.

Without considering the consequences, Vivian made a remark.

Nicholas, you're splashing everything around, and I've already set the table.

The man angrily threw the wet towel right into the face of the bewildered hostess.

Just think of the words you say.

    She set the table.

    What have you prepared?

    These miserable sandwiches?

I asked you to make a proper milk omelet like a normal person, and what did you come up

    with?

As usual, burnt coal just changed the ingredients.

Nicholas, it's only slightly burned around the edges, we can still eat it.

In a fit of rage, the man grabbed the frying pan and started shaking it.

    Slightly burnt.

Is that what you call it?

Do you think that's just a little?

    Eat your own mess.

For emphasis, Nicholas vigorously shook the kitchen utensil once again, and the yellowish

    substance splattered onto the floor.

The woman stared in shock at the smeared spot, and unbidden tears of hurt streamed down her

    pale cheeks.

    Why would you do this?

Now I have to clean up, and I still need to take Mason to daycare.

I can't be late for work.

Nicholas made a few movements resembling strikes on a wrestling dummy, and a shout erupted

    from his chest.

Vivian backed away into the corner because she knew well what would follow that auditory

    signal.

    Nicholas, please, don't.

I'll try my best not to do it again.

Satisfied with the effect he had produced, the man said in a peaceful tone.

That's right, try not to anger me anymore, and you'll have fewer troubles, and I'll be

    satisfied.

You should remember every minute the beautiful saying about finding a way to a beloved man's

    heart.

    Of course, Nicholas, I remember.

    Good.

That means not everything is lost yet.

If you wake up earlier, you won't have any troubles.

    Alright, I'm off.

And don't forget about the child.

Vivian has gone suspiciously quiet in his room.

    Go check on him.

The woman hurried after her husband.

    I'll definitely check Nicholas.

You should have some coffee, and the sandwiches are ready.

    No, thanks.

I'm not used to chewing on dry bread.

I'll grab something at the buffet at work.

Vivian started rushing to clean up in the kitchen.

She was afraid of being late for work because yesterday she received a scolding from her

department head, Ms. Sylvia, for being slow, along with a final warning.

Vivian swore solemnly that she wouldn't be late again.

Something crashed in the hallway, and her husband grumbled in dissatisfaction once again.

How many times have I asked you not to leave your boots on the shelf?

And where is that damn spoon?

    Nicholas, I'm coming.

The woman rushed into the hallway and handed her husband a shoehorn.

It was right in plain sight.

I forget everything in the world, even my own name because of you.

Nicholas glanced at himself in the mirror of the built-in wardrobe and unexpectedly said.

You mentioned your unemployed friend the other day.

    Yes, Andrea.

    We went to school together.

Everything went wrong for her in her personal life.

After divorcing her husband, she returned and is now looking for a job.

    Andrea.

    What a name.

I remember I had a cat in my childhood.

Her mother was also named Andrea.

    The man adjusted his scarf.

Let your friend come to the office tomorrow morning, around 10 o'clock.

    She might come earlier.

She's really in a critical situation.

    No, earlier is not necessary.

We'll have a meeting that will last about an hour.

When the door closed behind her husband, Vivian leaned against the wall and closed her eyes.

She trembled nervously and tears streamed down her face.

She didn't even attempt to wipe them away.

Oh God, how long will this last?

What sins have I committed to deserve this punishment?

Nearby, the timid footsteps of their son could be heard.

    Mama, I'm already dressed.

Despite his young age, Mason always tried to help his mother in everything, and his cute

    face was glowing with happiness.

The little boy was proud that he had managed to accomplish a challenging task on his own.

It didn't matter that his hat was on inside out and his sneakers were on the wrong feet.
