Scars of the Heart: The Saga of Mason and Alice (contos, #1)

One day you will get used to your pain, so much so that it will seem like it has gone

    away, but it hasn't.

    It didn't disappear.

It has hidden deep in your soul, curled up in the most secret corner of your heart, lurking

somewhere in the depths of your subconscious.

Know this, there will come a moment when it will make itself known and emerge, tearing

your battered heart to shreds, digging its sharp claws of painful memories into your

    skin, clouding your thoughts.

    What will you do then?

Cry through the night, bury yourself deeper into your pillow, lose yourself in heavy sleep,

and then, as if nothing had happened, go to work in the morning.

You'll deal with current issues, socialize, and even smile, because it's now with you

    forever.

    Yes.

This pain will always be with you.

    Mason sat by the lake.

He had come back here, where it all happened.

They told him not to touch old wounds, but he couldn't help coming.

After all, it was here, seven years ago, that he lost the most precious thing, his

daughter Alice was only five years old.

This terrible loss became the second one in Mason's life.

But before that, there was happiness.

Mason fell in love with Beatrice at first sight, although the circumstances of their

    meeting were not very romantic.

Mason worked on an ambulance at that time.

A regular doctor, he worked for days on end, practically living at work.

His mother was so worried, the guy was almost 30 years old, and he had no wife or child.

But Mason just laughed, he hadn't met his love yet.

    And then, boom, a call.

A 25-year-old girl who seemed to be an anaphylactic shock.

She opened the door to the doctor herself.

Small, graceful, like a doll, with huge blue eyes, long blonde hair, in a light robe and

    clearly not looking sick.

Do you understand, doctor, there's a problem here, Beatrice smiled at Mason pleadingly

when he asked about her condition.

I need your help, if you don't help me.

Mason, realizing it was a false alarm, frowned.

He didn't want to refuse such a nice lady, but it clearly seemed like he would have to.

And then Beatrice began to explain.

She had only been working as a school teacher for a month.

And today, of all days, she overslept.

She realized that she wouldn't make it to work, so she called the principal and lied

    about feeling sick.

She described everything in such detail that the principal herself called an ambulance,

although this was not part of Beatrice's plan.

And now she doesn't know what to do.

They'll fire me, she tragically said, bringing her hands and looking imploringly into Mason's

    eyes.

Mason pondered, what's the harm in telling a little white like just this once?

Suddenly, a young man burst into the apartment, a paramedic who worked alongside Mason.

He was a bit delayed in responding as he was on the phone with his wife.

So, where's the patient, he asked as he entered.

    Are we performing a tracheotomy?

No need to do anything, Mason replied with a smile.

The patient is actually quite healthy.

He has a minor allergy, which caused his temperature to rise.

We'll give him a shot and that'll be it.

    Really?

Carl asked a bit disappointedly, looking over at Beatrice.

    Well, alright.

He's never done a tracheotomy before, so he was really looking forward to it.

Mason gave the patient a harmless injection, wrote a note for Beatrice indicating that

she had called for an ambulance, and recommended that he see an allergist.

He gave a wink and a smile to Beatrice, who gratefully smiled back.

It seemed their paths had diverged, but a week later, Mason came to visit Beatrice on

    his day off.

It was already evening, and Beatrice opened the door, surprised to see him.

Oh, I didn't call for an ambulance, Beatrice stammered.

I'm not here on a call.

I'm here on my own, Mason smiled.

I just don't have your phone number, but I wanted to check in and see how things are

    going with your work.

Everything's normal, everything's good, Beatrice blossomed into a smile.

    I'm so grateful to you.

    Your note really helped.

    Well, that's good, Mason hesitated.

Beatrice, I actually wanted to invite you, say, to a cafe this Saturday.

    What do you think?

    I'm positively inclined, Beatrice laughed.

And so began their communication, which soon turned into a real love affair.

Within a month, Beatrice moved out of her rented apartment and into Mason's.

By new years, they were married, and in July, their daughter Alice was born.

Mason was overjoyed, a beautiful wife, a daughter, everything was going well for them.

Only his mother, Mrs. Green, didn't share his joy for.

One reason, she didn't like Beatrice.

Too faced, she repeated every opportunity.

Beatrice didn't have much love for her mother-in-lighter and tried to avoid interacting with her as

    much as possible.

When she did come to visit, Beatrice always found an excuse to leave and go see a friend.

You can play with Alice for a bit while you're here, Beatrice would sweetly pretend, I'm

going to visit Jean for a couple of hours.

And no matter what Mrs. Green said, objecting, Beatrice would jump up from her seat.

The mother would tell her son that his wife was not good at being a homemaker or a mother.

    But Mason didn't listen.

    He
