About this ebook

Little Missy had been in bed for weeks with Guillain-Barre syndrome, fatigue, and depression. Her father, frightened for her, asked, "What will make you happy?"

Little Missy said, "No one has time to spend with me, hours of time."

"If a companion will make you happy, I'll move heaven and earth to find you one."

Days later, Sammy knocked, entered, then jumped up on Little Missy's bed. She informed her that she was going to help her walk again. When asked how, she replied, "With miracles, lots and lots of miracles."

Little Missy had never met anyone like Sammy before, and before she knew it, she was knee-deep in miracles--the miracles of fresh air, exercise, movement, love, patience, and others. Sammy was so full of joy that she created days that were so much fun that Little Missy had no time for depression.

Soon, Little Missy was sitting up in bed, then going outside in a wheelchair, and finally riding her horse, Ebony. But the final glory was when she stood to use parallel bars to take her first steps in months.

Mr. Fullington was so grateful that he wanted to do something for Sammy that would be meaningful to her. Little Missy gave him a plan because she knew of Sammy's deep desire to be a veterinarian. They took Sammy to see their vet, who offered her a Saturday job until she graduated from high school, after which she was to have a full scholarship to a veterinarian college.

Sammy danced with great joy. Finally, she stopped and hugged Little Missy and whispered, "Can I call you by your name? You're way too old to be a Little Missy."

    Chapter 1

It was a beautiful day. At least it looked beautiful, as much as Little Missy could see from the partially draped window across the room. Fourteen-year-old Little Missy had been bedfast for months and months, and she was tired, so tired. The blond curls that had always bounced about her head lay limply on her pillow. Tears pooled at the corners of her sea-green eyes.

Dr. Grant had just left. Little Missy and her father had both seen the grave look in his eyes. Though he tried to be encouraging, neither felt encouraged.

You do what Nurse Jenkins tells you to do, he had said, and I promise you that someday, before too long, you’ll be well again, and these days will fade from your memory!

Little Missy’s father, Robert Fullington, sat on the edge of her bed, holding her hand in his. Fear filled his eyes as he stroked her pale skin gently. Sweetie, is there anything I can do to make you happy until you’re able to be up and well?

I’m lonely, Daddy! No one has time to spend with me, hours and hours of time. I understand that you’re busy, that Ellie has the house to keep, and that Nurse Jenkins is here mainly to meet my medical and physical needs. Nurse Jenkins bathes me, dresses me, and exercises my arms and legs; and Ellie feeds me lunch. But that’s not enough to keep me from being lonely. What can you do about that, Daddy? She looked sadly into his concerned eyes and squeezed his hand weakly.

I’ll find someone to spend time with you, lots of time, if keeping you from being lonely will make you happy. Just hide and watch your ole daddy work! A smile eased some of the concern lines on his face as he leaned over and gently hugged his daughter. His worry went deep because she seemed to be fading before his eyes.

Little Missy was all Mr. Fullington had since Adriana, his wife, had died two years ago. A few months before Little Missy got sick, Jessie, Adriana’s faithful old nursemaid, had also died. Jessie had raised Adriana as a child and then Little Missy; it was Jessie who had given Little Missy the name everyone called her. Little Missy had loved Jessie, her constant companion after her mother’s death, and her dad had found no one yet to take her place.

Sweetie, I’ve got to go to Washington today to see President Truman, but you lay here and dream about the new friend you’re going to have very soon. Thank goodness summer is here, and school is out. Maybe we can find someone your own age since school attendance won’t be a problem. And if Dr. Grant hasn’t freed you from your prison by fall, he said, patting her hand, then we’ll get a tutor for the both of you.

Mr. Fullington twirled one of her curls around
