stands as the bubbling wellspring you should draw from to stay at the peak of your performance.
***
For generations, the wonderful craft of public speaking has often been misused and misunderstood. Many have approached it with just their instincts and guesses. Unfortunately, this approach has often resulted in them feeling embarrassed and mocked in front of their innocent audience – whether it's at political events, lectures, government meetings, seminars, or even parties. Speak with Confidence: Another Gold Mine
serves as a trustworthy companion that can help you rewrite your story in this exceptional field. It's not just about transforming you from feeling like a joke to becoming a captivating speaker. Think of it as a treasure trove of techniques that will help you serve your audience an unforgettable experience. It can even teach you to make people like you when you talk! This masterpiece will not only equip you with the skills to create and deliver great speeches but also help you realize that speaking in public can be as exciting as making a commitment in marriage, as valuable as discovering a gold mine, and as easy as ABC.
Every time I have to talk in front of others, my whole-body freaks out! My heart races like a car going super-fast. My thoughts disappear, and my brain takes a break. My words get heavy, and my face gets hot. It's like a million butterflies are in my tummy. And the people looking at me make me feel like I did something bad. I wish I could just disappear!
If this resonates with you, then this book is for you.
More so, if you dream of holding a public office someday, then you need to stop dreaming and start learning how to talk to people. Don't just think about it. You must commit to learning how to win people over with what you say. That's a big deal! Great speakers use their words to make people think and feel things. When they say, You're awesome and should go to amazing places,
you start believing you can do great things. And if they say, You're in trouble and need to change,
you listen because you trust them. But you can't do all this without knowing how to talk well. That's where Speak with Confidence: Another Gold Mine
comes in. It can help you learn how to talk in a confident way.
Your words are like superheroes that can change the world. As we go through the chapters of this book, every word and story are here to inspire you and make you feel confident to speak in any environment.

Introduction
M
astering the art of public speaking is, without question, far from the simplicity it might be assumed to be. However, when mastered, it not only becomes a task of utmost simplicity, but also one of remarkable intrinsic reward. It is a discipline laden with challenges, faced by many yet approached by few. It's also a discipline that calls upon individuals to conquer the intimidating realm of addressing a sea of faces. To many, it's akin to embarking on a journey into the uncharted, a passage into the unknown. But why does it hold such power?
The fear of public speaking often claims the top spot among various fears, ranking higher than even diseases and mortality, as noted by Ian Mackenzie. Is there even a faint shadow of a reason why you should be unable to think as clearly while standing before an audience as you can while seated? Why should you be plagued by nervous butterflies in your stomach and succumb to trembles when you rise to address a gathering? It is evident that this condition can be mitigated through training and practice. The process of rehearsal, consistent practice, and dedicated training can dissipate the grip of stage fright, equipping you with the armor of self-confidence, as pointed out by Dale Carnegie.
In the face of a looming threat, one must never turn their back and attempt to flee. Such an action only magnifies the danger, doubling its impact. Instead, confronting the threat head-on, promptly and resolutely, serves to cut its potency in half. Remember this principle as you embark on a journey through these pages—an unwavering companion that beckons you to stride toward your fears, to confront the shadows of public speaking, and to face them with unwavering determination.
Winston Churchill once wisely stated, 'Never run away from anything.' This dictum reverberates through the passages of this book—a guiding slogan that encourages you to stand firm in the face of uncertainty. Let these words infuse you with the courage to engage, to overcome, and to transform your apprehensions into stepping-stones toward personal and professional growth.
Around us are countless men and women, brilliant and articulate, who effortlessly articulate their thoughts in one-on-one interactions — great conversationalists. Yet, paradoxically, these very individuals, who possess the finesse of expression in intimate settings, often falter, stumble over words, and quiver with nervousness when confronted with even a modest audience—perhaps just five, ten, or a few dozen individuals.
Over the past five years, my focus has been on imparting public speaking skills to secondary and university students across Africa. During this time, I've observed a significant trend – nearly 80% of these students are held back by a common weakness. This weakness influences their decision not to pursue a Bachelor of Arts/Science in Education as their university degree course. Their reasoning is quite direct – We can't imagine standing in front of hundreds of students, all eyes and ears on us. It's just too overwhelming!
These realities have driven home the fact that something needs to change. Firstly, it's striking that over 60% of these affected individuals are articulate and eloquent young talents. They possess the potential not only to secure university admissions but also to revolutionize the teaching profession. Secondly, they recognize that education, compared to other professions, offers a more manageable tuition fee and a less intense competition for jobs after graduation.
This challenge isn't confined to the realm of education; it extends into the business and working world. Countless entrepreneurs and business professionals worldwide, some even proprietors of their own ventures, find their career growth hindered by a fear of public speaking. This fear prevents them from fully engaging in public meetings, conferences, seminars, and presentations. In response, many opt to hire external professional speakers as their mouthpieces. Regrettably, these external ambassadors
often fail to convey the true essence of the organizations they represent. Their messages sometimes contradict the very philosophy that these businesses stand for.
In my adult training sessions, I've encountered a group of businessmen who bemoaned this situation. They admitted to relying on external speakers due to their own fear of addressing an audience directly. This common weakness isn't unique to them; perhaps you can relate. But take heart, for there is a beacon of hope. Public speaking is a treasure trove waiting to unlock your potential and reshape your path.
On a personal level, many intelligent and capable individuals, armed with their university degrees, enter the job market with confidence. However, their potential is often confined to a single role for years on end. What if I told you that public speaking could break these chains? What if it could propel you into new realms, granting you the freedom to explore diverse opportunities?
The power of public speaking extends beyond just a skill – it's a gold mine for personal and professional growth.
Why are public speaking skills indispensable?
The modern landscape of work has shifted from an inward focus to an outward perspective. In this evolving environment, possessing compelling and expressive communication skills has transformed from a preference to an essential human resource requirement. Whether it's in meetings, seminars, conferences, public debates, or talk shows, the ability to speak publicly has taken center stage. Those who lack this pivotal skill find themselves stumbling, offering their organizations a disservice, and falling short of expectations.
In response, organizations have resorted to demoting such individuals or relegating them to less-prominent roles. Positions that emerge within organizations, like public relations offices, international correspondents, client-organization liaisons, and spokespeople, are often beyond the grasp of those who haven't cultivated the skill of public speaking.
However, the value of public speaking transcends merely enhancing your career prospects within an organization. It can become a distinct profession, capable of offering rewards beyond your wildest imagination. This holds true regardless of your current or future profession. The journey into the world of public speaking carries the potential to unlock opportunities you've never dreamed of all whiles enhancing your present and future pursuits.
Who can venture into the world of public speaking?
In the waning days of 2018, I engaged in thoughtful conversations with college and university students. Amidst these discussions, I encountered an audience that seemed hesitant to associate their career paths with the art of public speaking. One individual even posed the question — How relevant are these skills to someone destined to manage a farm in an upcountry region like Mbarara, or to my neighbor studying human medicine, whose days revolve around the theater?
This query echoed the sentiments of many present, as they eagerly awaited my response.
I addressed this concern by offering a perspective shift. I began with a query: Have you ever come across the name Dr. Mich Egwang, a radio presenter?
To my surprise, a resounding 80% responded affirmatively. Continuing, I inquired whether they knew that a mere four years ago, he occupied the same seat they now sat in, pursuing a bachelor's degree in veterinary medicine. This connection resonated with them. I then revealed that he earns four times the average wage of veterinary doctors in the country by dedicating just a few hours to delivering public speeches. Their collective nods affirmed their recognition of this truth, setting the stage for further engagement.
Dr. Benjamin Carson's name followed suit in our conversation, as I recounted his story. As the head of Pediatrics at the renowned Johns Hopkins hospital in the USA, his fame and wealth transcend his remarkable work in the operating theater. He not only performs life-changing surgeries but also shares his expertise through writing and speeches. This multifaceted approach, combining printed works with public lectures, has elevated his impact to unprecedented heights. His story reflects a level of creativity and ease comparable to Hollywood productions. Dr. Carson's fame, largely attributed to his public lectures, showcases the far-reaching potential of this art beyond the confines of the operating room.
These narratives reflect a broader trend. Countless other individuals have ventured beyond their original professional domains to embark on part-time endeavors that necessitate public speaking (both for direct and indirect compensation). Some have entered the world of politics, assuming roles as public figures, talk show luminaries, lecturers, debaters, and even preachers. Their journeys exemplify the boundless opportunities that arise when individuals harness the transformative power of public speaking to enrich their lives and expand their horizons.
The encouraging aspect is that only a handful of these individuals are mandated to abandon their initial professions before embarking on the rewarding journey of public speaking. If you were to inquire among them, not even one would hesitate to affirm that embarking on a professional public speaking career is indeed akin to discovering another gold mine.
How have men and women gained fortunes from the profession? And how is public speaking a gold mine?
Men and women have reaped substantial fortunes from the world of professional public speaking, yielding benefits in both financial gain and political triumphs.
Take, for instance, the case of Donald Trump, the US public speaking luminary. He reportedly earned a staggering $1.5 million per speech during his engagement in 17 speeches for a leading real estate company in the 20s. The cumulative sum of $25.5 million that flowed into his accounts stands as a substantial resource capable of sustaining him and his family for numerous decades, should he choose to forgo further work after concluding his 17 speaking engagements. This significant income disparity is even more remarkable in a country where university lecturers are regarded as the pinnacle earners in the world of speaking engagements. A Harvard professor or lecturer, who is considered highly remunerated for his intellectual contributions, would have to dedicate over 150 years of continuous service to amass the financial achievements that Donald Trump attained within just 17 speeches spanning 17 days (approximately 2 and a half weeks). This juxtaposition prompts the professor and others like him to perceive this as an inequitable distribution of earnings. They have invested an additional seven years in higher education, work a standard 24 days a month (approximately 3 and a half weeks), and have often sacrificed personal time with loved ones to commit to their scholarly pursuits.
Anticipate further developments in this domain, for history may potentially repeat itself in a manner akin to the famed campaign contest of 1853 between Senator Douglas and Abraham Lincoln. A contest that, in retrospect, is predominantly remembered through the lens of oratory prowess and finds a place of prominence in oratory literature rather than conventional political chronicles.
Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair reigns as the paramount earner in the business of hourly payment for speaking engagements. This eminent orator's bank account registers a jaw-dropping $650,000 (equivalent to 16 billion Ugandan shillings) for each lecture he delivers. Tony Blair strategically targets an exclusive audience composed of discerning businessmen, college students, and statesmen scattered across Europe, Japan, and the United States, all of whom possess the financial wherewithal to shoulder the substantial speaking fees.
To put this into perspective, a 2008 report from Uganda's Ministry of Education reveals that it requires 30 million shillings to construct a primary school in Uganda. Blair's selfless gesture of sacrificing the earnings from a single lecture could bring smiles to 54 districts in Uganda, each benefiting from the establishment of a school.
In a league of his own, Bill Clinton, the former President of the United States, commands a speaking fee ranging from $150,000 to $240,000 per hour, an amount that surpasses the entire five-month salary of university professors at esteemed institutions throughout Europe and America. To provide context, if Clinton were to engage in a four-day speaking marathon totaling 96 hours, his earnings of 8.4 billion Ugandan shillings would surpass the 8.3 billion shillings earned by Life Liberty,
a prominent insurance company in Uganda, in 2009. Clinton's popularity extends to consistently delivering speeches lasting four hours each, all of which are compensated at this remarkable rate. However, the first hour typically comprises casual and social messages. Organizations and corporations eagerly vie for Clinton's attention, withstanding the seemingly daunting figure of $960,000 per engagement. They view his acceptance of their invitation to speak as a cause for celebration, given the deluge of similar offers that inundate him on a weekly basis.
Albert Gore, a name that resonates with many when reminiscing about the fervent presidential race against George W. Bush for the White House in America, is certainly no small player. He stands as a preeminent environmental commentator, and his speeches have eloquently bridged the gap between the environment and humanity, thanks to his captivating oratory skills. This former Vice President under Bill Clinton and the recipient of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize is among the highest-paid individuals in the United States on a per-speech basis. He effortlessly commands fees ranging from $200,000 to $400,000 for each public address. It remains an enigma as to how many millions he amassed for delivering a speech following the catastrophic Hurricane Katrina on 09/09/2000. Undoubtedly, his contributions warranted a reward beyond measure.
Setting aside the minor fluctuations in the dollar exchange rate, Dr. Russell Conwell, the acclaimed writer and orator who penned and delivered the renowned speech titled 'Acres of Diamond,' emerges as another luminary in the world of public speaking. Overcoming personal struggles to attain a college education, this Philadelphia-based preacher exemplified the notion that public speaking is indeed a gold mine. He allocated a portion of his earnings from his speaking endeavors to finance the college education of more than 3,000 financially challenged individuals. During a time when a public servant's salary in the United States of America rarely exceeded $400, Dr. Conwell managed to amass a staggering sum of over 8 million dollars through his speaking engagements. This feat becomes even more impressive when considering that, at that time, $1,000 could secure you the house of your dreams from a top-tier real estate company.
Nonfinancial gains from the mine of public speaking
Beyond the finances and numbers, public speaking emerges as the cornerstone that has propelled individuals to greater heights in their political journeys across the world. Irrespective of age or gender, it is imperative for individuals to recognize that they are part of an ever-changing world
