What is leading from the middle
all about? Let’s start with some expectation setting. First off, I want you to know that this isn’t your typical leadership course. I’m not an executive or a senior leader, and haven’t done any earth-shattering work. I’m just an ordinary human being, who has spent many years working through understanding myself, and where I fit in the corporate world. In this journey, I found that conventional understandings of leadership simply didn’t serve me.
There are certain qualities that we associate with leadership — when I’ve polled managers about this in the past, they associated leadership with terms like good listener,
mentor,
teacher,
empathy,
collaborator
... you’ve probably heard it all before. These aren’t necessarily wrong answers… but what if I told you that these are just external traits, that there’s something that comes before all of this that makes us leaders? What if we can only have these traits if we have that one thing?
