In this first chapter , we’ll join Amina in her fateful journey to the Market. Come with her as she wonders about love, and how that simple trip to the market changed her life–forever.
Amina, my dear, I need you to go to the market and buy some groceries for us. We are running low on rice, beans, tomatoes, and onions. And don’t forget to get some fish for the soup.
Latifa, Amina’s mother, said as she handed her a list and some money.
Alright, Mama. I’ll be back soon,
Amina replied, taking the list and the money. She put on her headscarf and sandals, grabbed a basket, and then took off towards the local market in Agege, Lagos.
Be careful, Amina. The market is very crowded and noisy. Don’t let anyone cheat you or take advantage of you. And don’t talk to strangers,
Latifa shouted the warning, even though she was already on her way. But she heard her and, raising her voice, she responded, Don’t worry, Mama. I know how to handle myself. I’ve been to the market many times before.
Amina’s response was a reassurance to her mother, who muttered to herself, Good girl,
but she couldn’t help adding, And hurry back. I need to cook dinner soon so your father, who’s just returned home from work, can eat.
But somehow, Amina still heard her from several metres away, so she said, Yes, Mama.
Moments later, she turned and ran back to the house as she had forgotten the bag that her mother gave her for carrying the foodstuff she was going to buy. Latifa eyed her as if to say, Oh, this is your fortunate day for not forgetting the bag; otherwise, you would have had to carry everything in your headscarf.
She kissed her mother on the cheek and headed for the door.
Bye, Amina. Have a good time at the market.
Bola, Amina’s father, said as he saw her leaving. He was sitting on the sofa, reading a newspaper and relaxing after a long day’s work.
Bye, Papa. I’ll be back soon.
Amina said. She smiled at her father and waved goodbye.
The girl stepped out of the apartment and walked down the street. She could hear the sounds of the city: the honking of cars, the shouting of vendors, the laughter of children. Kids like her loved living in Lagos, Nigeria's largest and most vibrant city. It was full of life and energy.
She reached the bus stop and waited for a bus that would take her to the market, but she didn’t have to wait long because a yellow bus with black stripes soon arrived. The place was packed with people, but Amina squeezed in and paid the fare; she then found a small seat near the window.
Amina looked out and watched the city pass by. Along the street, there were tall buildings, colourful billboards, busy side streets, and people of all kinds: men in suits, women in dresses, children in uniforms, old people in traditional clothes. The girl felt a sense of wonder and curiosity about them all. Then she wondered what their lives were like, what their dreams and stories were.
It was right at that moment, and for the very first time in her young, busy life, that Amina wondered if she would ever meet somebody one day; someone who would share her life, her
