A FEW weeks ago I went to the Calabash in Cape Town specially to see Maroon 5. I’d invited a childhood friend to go with me and we set off like a couple of giggly teens – and on a school night too!

I hadn’t been to a concert for a long time, but as soon as I set foot in the stadium the buzz of the crowd and the smell of boerie rolls, beer and popcorn took me right back. And what a sweet reminder it was.

Most of the concert-goers were in their 30s and 40s, excited to let loose and have a night away from the regular adulting routine. I even heard a couple of moms excitedly screeching about having a night off from their kids.

As the show started a group of friends near us put their arms around each other’s shoulders and sang their hearts out,
