Why This Book Was Written
We all build wisdom in our life’s journeys. As we age, though, it can be difficult to determine how and when to pass that knowledge to loved ones.
My wife and I were blessed with our two grandsons when I was already in the winter of my life and I feared I would not live long enough to share with them those things I thought were important for them to know. I decided books, written to them, would be the perfect solution. Thus I wrote Things I Wanted My Grandson To Know Before I Leave
, (Chapter 1) and Things I Wanted My Grandsons To Know Before I Leave
(Chapter2).
In my two books (Chapters 1 & 2), I offer my two grandsons a collection of quotes, sayings, snippets, and examinations designed to inform, delight, and inspire. By sharing wisdom I have gleaned from my decades on this Earth, I challenge my grandsons to live successful, God-centered lives, and offer a heartfelt approach to living an authentic life. Entries range from funny, to sincere, to profound.
As a Nebraskan who has indulged in the pleasures of a simple, honest and hardworking existence alongside my wife, Jan, I have a deep sense of human nature. I take immense pride in sharing hard-earned lessons with my grandsons as well as readers who will benefit from the unique perspective I have culled from walking my life with Jesus.

Introduction
My dearest Grayson,
I was already an old man when you were born so chances of me being around to tell you these things while you are growing up are pretty slim. From the day you were born I began making a list of old sayings, quotations, snippets, lessons I’ve learned, beliefs, and observations that I believe helped make me who I am; some I read, others were told to me by friends and loved ones, and still others were my own thoughts. Many made me laugh, and many brought tears to my eyes, but all made me think, I thought all were worth knowing and remembering. You are the son I never had and my aim is to share them with you in hopes they might make you a better person, and your journey through this life just a little easier. Only you, your loved ones and friends will never know if I hit my mark.
There is a God, one God, and His love for us is unconditional and never ending.
Horses probably buck because they don’t like people sittin’ on ‘em.
Always drink from the creek upstream from the herd.
Not everything on the ground in the corral is dirt.
God made mosquitoes, flies, and sand burs to remind us that we are sinners.
Never try to count your blessings ‘cause you’ll never be able to count that high. And besides, sometimes you will get a blessing and not even know it.
You can never go wrong with Butter Pecan ice cream.
Grandma doesn’t really think the firemen will care if your underwear is clean.
Always try and think before you speak, words can hurt and that hurt lasts far longer than a punch in the nose.
I think bulls spend their entire life in a bad mood.
Choose your words carefully; someday you may have to eat them.
It’s far better to let people think you’re a fool then to open your mouth and remove all doubt.
BIBLE stands for Basic instructions Before Leaving Earth.
Sometimes it doesn’t matter what you say, but it always matters how you say it.
Crayon marks on the wall will wash of f.
When you hurt somebody, it’s like driving a nail into a piece of wood, you can remove the nail, but the hole will always be there.
It’s okay for men to cry, grandpa does his share.
Tears of joy are far better than tears of sorrow.
Good or bad, like it or not, your heart has a mind all its ow n. You can tell it what to do but it won’t listen at all.
Your heart is big enough to love more than one.
Love
is probably the most overused word in the entire world.
Human nature makes us always want to be first, but being best is a whole lot better.
Remember, it’s hard to start a fire with wet wood.
Never try and drown your sorrows, I learned a long time ago they know how to swim.
Don’t put the key to your happiness in someone else's pocket; keep it in your own.
Loving your grandma and loving Butter Pecance Cream are not the same.
Worry is like riding a rocking horse; it passes the time, but doesn’t take you anywhere.
Anger serves no useful purpose.
Being a cowboy isn’t a state of mind, it’s a way of life.
If something doesn’t look like it’s worth the effort, it probably isn’t.
Sometimes being silent may be your best answer.
Arguments and fights only prove who’s louder or stronger, not who’s right or wrong. Sometimes it’s real hard, but always try and avoid both.
Walking away from a fight does not mean you’re a coward. But if a fight is absolutely unavoidable, don’t throw the fir st punch but do your darnedest to throw the last.
When it comes to horses, admire the big one, but saddle the small one.
Be willing to defend those who can’t defend themselves.
It’s hard to put your foot in your mouth if it’s shut.
If you sleep 8 hours every day, you will have missed 1/3 of your entire life.
We are not born
