An intense first day induction with her fellow applicants is just a taste of what awaits them all for the next twelve months. Will the money alone be enough motivation to see the contract through to the end, or will Meredith and her newfound friends find something else to keep them going once they learn how extraordinary a hucow's daily life can be?

Welcome to Mellowmilk Farms - Fenchurch Francisco

Honestly Meredith, I think you’d be among our top one percent of applicants.

That certainly wasn’t the response I was expecting. I’d applied for the job on a whim after being fired unceremoniously from my last one – fifteen years of dutiful admin work seen off with a bottle of cheap local wine and a rote we’re sorry to see you go from management. I’d drunk the wine half in spite when I’d gotten home and started browsing job sites, sending off applications to the silliest looking jobs I could find for fun after a while.

I hadn’t thought that any of them would reply.

Mellowmilk Farms had come to prominence over the last two decades as one of the prime purveyors of human livestock, or hucows as the term had been coined by the media. Their farms were far more efficient than a traditional dairy farm; with no requirement for grazing cattle, they could be set up in almost any location that had space for a large barn or warehouse. Within six months of beginning their operations, Mellowmilk products were on shelves across the nation and were continually in high demand due to their exceptional standards of quality.

The dairy that had contacted me was situated on the outskirts of the city in an industrial park near the suburbs, just under an hour’s drive from my apartment. I’d woken up that morning with a slight hangover to find the interview offer in my inbox, and was about to delete it when I saw what they were offering as a salary package.

Two hundred and fifty thousand dollars per annum.

    As an introductory offer.

A quick shower and breakfast and I was on my way – and now here I was a couple of hours later, having been taken out of the group interview for a one-on-one instead with the production manager, a man by the name of Mark Benedict.

Most of our applicants tend to be – no offence, of course – on the young adult side, fresh out of high school or college and looking to make some easy money, Mark continued. We’re still a relatively new facility, so the vast majority of our livestock are between nineteen to twenty-five. Having said that, we’re always on the lookout for anyone of your pedigree.

I nodded along with him. "Pardon me for asking, but what do you mean by pedigree?"

Fit, no health issues, aged twenty-six to thirty-nine, he said simply. Market research has shown that cows within that range produce the finest milk. Mark cleared his throat and leaned forward on the desk. I’ll be frank, Meredith. If you were interested in taking this role, we’d be prepared to offer you a considerably larger retainer than the initial offer, based on that reasoning.

    My
