How to Improve Your Academic Performance - Atik Shaharier

    PREFACE:

Research Is Not a Cuss Word

You probably only have a little time to read lengthy guides on studying effectively, so we've compiled the essential information you need to start improving your study habits immediately.

Teachers have an unspoken assumption that you will somehow figure out how to study between adolescence and the beginning of university. I don't know where people got that idea because only a few institutions genuinely educate students on how to take notes well, and most professors, to be fair, have more information to cover than time. Therefore, study techniques are seldom included in the lesson plan, leaving you without the tools necessary to realize your academic potential... which is why we are here.

Some people could even say that study is a four-letter word. Even the thought of it sends most people straight into a nightmare about the paperwork they must do before tomorrow. It's enough to make someone put off doing anything or maybe die from stress-related causes.

Learning how to pace yourself is essential. Learning how to study hard without going crazy is the key. Or, to put it another way, it's about making the most of your brain's capacity to learn by employing naturally effortless methods for you; in other words, being clever while retaining your sanity. I've produced this cheerful little book to get you started on what I hope will be a lifetime of studiousness and achievement to make you as brilliant as possible in a way that is as painless as possible in as little time as possible, which is ultimately the point.

    Chapter: 01

    Drunks, Druggies, Nerds, and Lazybones

Figuring out who you're going to be in your research

We'd all be much more productive if studying were as easy as sleeping on it or if we could insert a computer chip into our brains. I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but here it is: achievement doesn't come without effort. I hate to be the one to break your heart, but getting good grades demands a lot of hard work and sacrifice. Not a huge surprise. Nonetheless, that's no reason to stop trying to make your job enjoyable. If you approach school with the correct mindset, resources, and goals, you might be pleasantly surprised by how much fun you can have to achieve them.

In contrast, the few natural geniuses have to work much harder at things that come quickly to the rest of us, such as being organized and getting excellent marks without trying. Everyone possesses a unique set of skills. By the end of this book, I hope you will have a firm grasp on your learning strengths and a greater sense of self-assurance as you apply them to subjects in which you may be less proficient.

It's frustrating to want to succeed yet have to learn how to get there. Just like the chapter's title implies, we all have a little of a slacker in us if we're being utterly forthright with ourselves. Let's be honest here, shall we? Who among us likes going to the office? However, the job is one of those inevitable realities that may transform some of us into maniacs, others of us into geeks, and a fortunate few into pumpkins — er, brainiacs. Thankfully, you are reading this book and on your way to the latter.

Finding your study persona is the first step in optimizing your strengths (which will be covered in the following chapter). You're probably reading this book because you could be performing better academically than you are right now. As someone who has taught English to high school students, I students typically fall into one of four study personas when given homework.

Identifying the profile most like your own can help you focus your study efforts more effectively. Just read on and check the box next to the description that closely matches your own.

You put forth a lot of effort, stay up all night, and yet need to go somewhere (THE UNPERFECTED PERFECTIONIST). What a pain! The results differ from what you'd hoped for, even when making all the correct moves (and occasionally the grades to back it up). The quality may be better than expected. Or, when the final exam rolls around, you find that you have forgotten everything you worked so hard to study at the beginning of the quarter. You're to the point where you'd instead give up and then continue putting in the effort that's not paying off.

The deadline Daredevil: You believe you do your best work under pressure, so you put off starting your project until the night before the deadline, crossing your fingers that the printer won't go on strike. The proposal is plausible and attractive. When are adrenaline and fear not effective motivators? Still, you have to prepare twice as much for the midterm and final as you did for the first exam. And last week, you came up empty when you were hoping to impress that attractive person with your knowledge of the Han Dynasty. For the time being, your strategy is working. On the other hand, there will be days when you're constantly fighting fires caused by missed deadlines, leading to an early onset of gray hair.

YOU ARE THE MACK OF SLACKERS: You have mastered the fine art of accomplishing absolutely nothing. You are the only one who knows what to expect when checking the scores, yet you act as if you don't give a hoot. People in your classes appear to like you more than they like studying, passing or caring about you. You wouldn't tell anyone, but you're slowly but surely.

You are wondering how to go from cool to millionaire, and you aren't sure if your Aunt Tilda bought enough lottery tickets for your plan to pay off.

The mind conditioner: You have just the right amount of study time and free time so that you can ace the test and yet have time to live. You may maximize your time spent studying and ensure that it will be both productive
