INTRODUCTION

The process of learning is a highly intricate phenomenon that stems from various factors converging into a unified outcome. Among these factors, two crucial categories can be identified: cognitive and emotional. However, the predominant educational paradigm tends to overlook or downplay the significance of psychological aspects, progressively marginalizing them as students advance within the system.

Nevertheless, the emergence of constructivism and the profound impact of the theory of multiple intelligences have triggered an educational revolution, igniting a fresh discourse in pedagogy. This discourse recognizes the role of emotions as a fundamental component that must be considered for the comprehensive education of students.

In the world of social sciences, defining theoretical constructs to work with is never an easy task, and emotions are no exception. It is widely acknowledged that all human beings experience emotions throughout their existence. While we may not always control their effects, the significance of emotional education becomes apparent as an essential aspect of individual development. It holds as much importance as academic education, as both facets are interdependent, rendering it inconceivable to cultivate one without addressing the other.

Considering that the educational process hinges upon the interaction between two primary participants—learners and educators—the latter should acknowledge their influential role in shaping the emotions and feelings of the former. This influence occurs within a specific cultural context, ultimately defining our understanding of emotions and feelings.

CHAPTER 1

WHAT IS EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE?

The concept of Emotional Intelligence has played a significant role in shaping the field of psychology in recent decades. In contrast to the earlier model that primarily focused on mental disorders and reasoning abilities, a new model has emerged recognizing the intrinsic nature of emotions in our behavior and non-pathological mental functioning. Consequently, the study of emotions has become essential for comprehending our being.

Emotional Intelligence, therefore, serves as a construct that aids in understanding how we can intelligently and adaptively influence both our own emotions and our interpretation of others' emotional states. This dimension of human psychology plays a pivotal role not only in our social interactions but also in our strategies for adapting to the environment we inhabit.

Emotional Intelligence: What does it mean?

We have often heard that Intelligence Quotient (IQ) serves as a reliable indicator of an individual's potential for success in life. This quotient assesses cognitive abilities and has been believed to correlate strongly with academic performance and professional accomplishments. While this perspective is not entirely incorrect, it presents a biased and incomplete view of reality.

In recent decades, researchers and corporations have recognized that success in life necessitates a broader range of skills and abilities that go beyond logic and rationality. These additional capacities are not assessable through traditional intelligence tests. It becomes imperative to adopt a more comprehensive understanding of basic cognitive skills and intelligence itself.

This realization has led to the emergence of various theories of intelligence that seek to explore it from different angles. Examples include Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences, Raymond Cattell's differentiation between fluid and crystallized intelligence, and the popularized concept of Emotional Intelligence introduced by Daniel Goleman.

The Significance of Emotions in Everyday Life

If we pause to reflect on the influence of emotions in our daily lives, we quickly realize that they have a significant impact on numerous occasions, even when we may not be fully aware of it. Consider the following questions:

(1) Did I purchase my car by solely calculating its profitability and comparing it with other models and brands?

(2) Did I choose my partner solely based on objective criteria, deeming them the best choice?

(3) Is my job solely determined by the highest salary it offers?

Many of our decisions, to varying degrees, are influenced by our emotions.

In light of this reality, it is worth acknowledging that some individuals possess a more advanced emotional aspect compared to others. It is intriguing to note the limited correlation between traditional intelligence (associated with logical and analytical performance) and Emotional Intelligence.

For instance, we often encounter the stereotype of the nerd student—an intellectual powerhouse capable of memorizing vast amounts of information and arriving at optimal logical solutions but lacking emotional depth and fulfillment.

Conversely, we come across individuals whose intellectual capacities may be minimal, yet they excel in their emotional realm and even in their professional lives.

While these extreme examples are rare, they underscore the importance of paying attention to emotional skills that can profoundly impact our lives and happiness, potentially surpassing the significance of excelling on a general intelligence test. Hence, it becomes crucial to delve deeper into the realm of Emotional Intelligence.

ELEMENTS OF EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE

Emotional Intelligence, as highlighted by Daniel Goleman, the renowned American psychologist and theorist, comprises several key components. These components encompass the following:

1. Emotional self-awareness:

This component involves recognizing and understanding our own feelings and emotions and how they impact our behavior. It is crucial to be aware of how our emotional state influences our decision-making process, our strengths, and our weaknesses. Many individuals are surprised by how little they truly know about themselves. For instance, this self-awareness can help us refrain from making impulsive decisions when we are in an emotionally imbalanced state. By waiting until we are in a calm and rational mental state, we can assess situations more objectively and make sound decisions.

2. Emotional self-control (or self-regulation):

Emotional self-control enables us to reflect upon and manage our emotions rather than being blindly driven by them. It involves recognizing transient psychological dynamics from more enduring ones. Additionally, it entails understanding which aspects of an emotion can be utilized constructively and how to interact with the environment in a way that minimizes the influence of emotions that may harm us. For example, it is common to experience anger towards our partner, but being a slave to the immediate emotion could lead to irresponsible or impulsive behavior that we later regret. Regulating emotions often involves effectively managing our focus of attention to prevent self-sabotage.

3. Self-motivation:

Directing our emotions toward goals and objectives helps us maintain motivation and remain focused, transcending limitations. This component necessitates a degree of optimism and initiative, valuing proactive behavior and dedicated performance in the face of unforeseen circumstances. By motivating ourselves to pursue goals that we rationally understand to be beneficial, we can overcome obstacles rooted in habit or unfounded fears.

4. Recognition of emotions in others (or empathy):

Interpersonal relationships rely on accurately interpreting the signals others unconsciously express, often through non-verbal means. Detecting these emotions and feelings, which can be conveyed through gestures, physiological reactions, or tics, helps establish closer and more enduring connections with the individuals we interact with. Furthermore, recognizing and understanding the emotions and feelings of others is the first step towards empathy and developing higher emotional intelligence-related skills and abilities.

5. Interpersonal relationships (or social skills):

Establishing positive relationships with others is a crucial source of happiness and often contributes to excellent job performance. This component involves knowing how to treat and communicate with those we are close to, as well as individuals with whom we may not have a close connection. Emotional intelligence plays a vital role in considering that any interaction between individuals occurs within a specific context. Instead of solely focusing on how others make us feel, it encourages us to understand the underlying causes that may lead others to behave in certain ways, thereby enabling thoughtful responses.

The Importance of Emotional Intelligence for Companies

Many corporations invest significant resources in training their employees in Emotional Intelligence. This strategic investment stems from the realization that the success of their products and commercial endeavors depends on the ability of their workers to recognize and regulate their own emotions, as well as understand the emotions of their customers. For instance, it is almost inconceivable to have a salesperson lacking customer service skills, an entrepreneur devoid of motivation in managing their company, or a negotiator unable to control their impulses and emotions. Technical expertise alone, without adequate emotional understanding, will not guarantee success and may undermine business operations due to an insufficient grasp of one's emotions.

The Highly Sought-After Employees: Those with Emotional Intelligence

It is worth noting that in the personnel selection processes of companies, there is a growing emphasis on putting candidates in situations of intense stress or discomfort to assess their reactions and their ability to manage their emotions.
