About this ebook

Maan Sagari is amongst a few ancient treatises which was composed in the
primeval time.Although the exact origin of this text is not known, some scholars
trace it to the 16th century. This astrological text however, has assumed remarkable importance for its unique and special treatment accorded to the
intricate and complex features of this pristine monograph. Most of its assertions
and expositions were so original, fundamental and creative in character that the
learned astrological seers defined this peerless Grantha as MaanSagari
Paddhiti. This text holds a most distinguished position amongst the great ancient
astrological classics whose innovative and rare principles and dictums became
most efficacious oracles and authoritative predictive tools. These
pronouncements are believed to be based on Parasari and Bhrigu schools of
thought.

For delineating a horoscope, neither have I taken any support of a time device nor have I gazed at the stars (Nakshatras) and not even made the use of shade (reflection) of the Conch (Shanka ). I am writing the results of the native’s birth chart based on birth time as narrated by others.

The native of this horoscope be blessed by Lord Ganesha, nine planets and also planets of the Gotras of the father and the mother (family lineage to a Rishi ).

Notes: AS per Hindu lore, we all are the descendants of Saptrishis (seven sages) and thus are linked with a particular Rishi’ s Gotra. These Gotras, in addition, to other ingredients, are also considered for marital compatibility. In chapter XIII titled ‘Decision of Marriage’ of Kalaprakasika, a method of fixing Gotra through birth Nakshatra has been enunciated. According to this, 28 Nakshatras (including Abhijita) are divided into seven sets of four Nakshatras each and these sets are represented by seven Rishis, as shown in the appended table.

    Table-1: Nakshatra Gotras

The Gotras of a boy and the girl should be different. If both of them are of the same Gotra, it will produce evil effects.

Like a Lamp which illuminates all the objects in a house during darkness, the horoscope depicts the complete futuristic aspects of the native’s life.

    Chapter 2

    Samvatsara etc.

    Effects of birth in Samvatsaras:

    विक्रमादित्यवर्षेभ्यः पञ्चत्रिंशोत्तरं शतम् ।

    पातयित्वा भवेच्छाकं मानं तस्माच्च ते स्मृताः ॥ 1 ॥

By subtracting 135 years from Vikrama Samvat, the Shaka Samvat is deduced. Likewise, on adding 135 years in the Shaka Samvat, the Vikrama Samvat is found.

Notes: Vikrama Samvat begins on the Ist Tithi of Chaitra Maasa (Lunar month) of Shukla Paksha. The Shaka Samvat commences with the solar ingress in the Aries sign. In order to find out Shaka Samvat the solar ingress of the Aries sign from the Ist Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Chaitra Maasa, a figure of 136 years needs to be subtracted therefrom:

Krita, Treyta, Dwapara and Kali Yugas (Eras):

    ‘खखाभ्र-दन्त-सागरै-र्युगाग्नियुग्मभूगुणैः ।

    क्रमेण सूर्यवत्सरैः कृतादयो युगाङ्घ्रयः ॥ 1 ॥

By multiplying 432000 by 4, 3, 2, 1, the number of years of krita, Treyta, Dwapara and Kali Yugas are notified respectively.

Notes: In accordance to the above, Krita Yuga has 1728000, Treyta- 1296000, Dwapara- 864000 and Kali yugas of 432000 (sidereal) years. The total of all the four eras comes to 4320000 years, which is called one Mahayuga or Chatur Yugas.

    Yuga Nayana :

Kali Yuga is reckoned as 432000 years and by multiplying it by 4, we get the number of years of Krita, by 3, of Treyta, by 2 of Dwapara years.

The computation of normal month, additional (Adhika) month, lost (Kshaya) month, normal year (Samvatsara ). Additional year, lost year etc., be worked out on the basis of arithmetical calculations and as are given in various Granthas (Panchanga-Almanac).

A native who is born in Kali Yuga is an evil, aggrieved, poor, infamous, unintelligent and a wicked person.

    Name of Samvatsaras

The Names of Samvatsaras denoted in these verses are formatted in a tabular form for the benefit of the readers.

    Table 2: Name of Samvatsaras

Out of these, the Samvtsaras from 1 to 20 are called as Bramhavinshatika, from 21 to 40, Vishnuvinshatika and while from 41 to 60 Samvatsaras are known as Rudravinshatika

    Method of fixing Samvatsara:

    शकेन्द्रकालः पृथगाकृतिघ्नः (22)

    शशाङ्कनन्दाश्वियुगैः (4291) समेतः

    शराद्रिवस्विन्दु (1875) हृतः सलब्धः

    षष्ठ्याप्तशेपे प्रभवादयोब्दाः ॥ 7 ॥

Put present number at two places. Multiply one number by 22 and add 4291 in resultant. After dividing the product by 1875, the quotient be added to the second member. By dividing the product by 60, the remainder number will denote the name of the Samvatsara in that order (suppose the remainder comes to digit-1, it will be termed as Prabhava Samvatsara, and so on and so forth).

If we are desirous to find out the month, the remainder after is divided by 1875, be multiplied by 12. The figure be again divided by 1875, the quotient will denote the month. Likewise, if we need to find out the day, the remainder is multiplied by 30 and divided by 1875, the quotient over here will indicate the number of days. By the same process, hours, minutes and seconds could also be worked out.

    Example:

Suppose the present era year is 2003 and we intend to locate the corresponding name of Samvatsara, by multiplying 2003 by 22, which comes to figure 44066 and by adding 4291, it will become 48357. Divide it by 1875, the quotient will be 25 which be added to 2003 to make it 2028. By dividing this figure by 60, the remainder will come to 46. This means that 46th Samvatsara has been completed and 47th Samvatsara is the running one. The 47th Samvatsara is Parmadi.

    Second method of fixing Samvatsara:

    शांक रामाक्षि (23) संयुद्र कृत्वा षष्ठ्या विभाजयेत्

    शेषात् संवत्सरो ज्ञेयो प्रभवाद्यो बुधैः सदा ॥ 8 ॥

Add 23 in the current year (Shaka) and divide the figure by 60 and the remainder will show the completed number of Samvatsara. Add 1 to it to get the current year. Or initially add 24 instead of 23 to arrive at the current number of the Samvatsara.

    Example:

By applying the above method on the previous example, it will work out this way. Add 23 to the current year 2003 to make it 2026. By dividing this figure by 60, we get a remainder as 46 and by adding 1 to it, we reach to the 47th Samvatsara viz. Parmadi.

Notes: Samvatsaras by and large are identical to the span of one sidereal year. Savant Sripati pointed out that the application of an average movement of Jupiter is taken to ascertain the scheme of 60 cyclic years. Therefore, one year will equal to the mean coverage of one sign by Jupiter in a horoscope. There are different schools of thought to define this Phenomenon. However, it seems logical to use Jupiterian movements in determining the order of this cycle of 60 years.

The application of Jupiterian Samvatsara (year) is in vogue in certain specific fields of astrology. The logic behind its efficacy in presaging the tenable results is that in every cycle of 60 years, Jupiter and Saturn take respectively five and two rounds of the zodiacal path and thereafter they reach on to the original starting point where they were 60 years earlier and recommence their sojourn. Jupiter’s 60 years cycle is also known as the Jovian Cycle, which in fact, reflects a combined effect of Jupiter and Saturn. After carrying out deep and sustained observations of the visible effects of Jupiter and also imperceptible and indirect effects of Saturn, the ancient sages had propounded the results of each Samvatsara (Jovian year).

Normally, these results are more pronounced and useful in mundane, worldly and terrestrial matters. In presaging the trends in the areas such as meteorological, economical status of a country’s political upheavals, natural calamities etc., the Samvatsaras have been found very helpful.
