    Chapter-01

    Introduction

The important and a specific role of astrology in one’s social and family life or even in the path of following a spiritual life are immense, when the existence of a person upon earth is directly linked to one’s past karmas. TheBrihat Parashra Hora Shastra, almost a bible for attaining the knowledge of astrology, makes a clear mention of the belief of reincarnation. Parashra texts clearly mention about the past, present and the future births. It also mentions about the mode of one’s death because of one’s good or badKarmas of one’s past life or lives. Varahmihira too mentions it in clear terms.

Settled norms and principles of astrological predictions are thus almost heaven’s sent, which the great spiritual sages of the past like Parashara Muni, the Varahamira Muni and the like have compiled with a spiritual vision at their command. Astrology and its practicing is to deal with the science of Cosmos. It needs vision and direction which comes only after following a path of righteousness (Dharma). It has to equally to have the blessings of Mother Saraswati too, as Goddess Saraswati or Devi Sarasvati is the goddess of knowledge. She is the consort of Lord Brahma. Goddess Saraswati is considered to be themother of the Vedas. Goddess Saraswati is symbol of knowledge; its flow (or growth) is like a river and knowledge is supremely alluring, like a beautiful woman.

Like other facets of life marriage of a person too is the outcome of one’ s Karma of the past. How, when and where one gets married is directly linked to one’ s Karmas of the past. Denial and distress in marriage are also related to one’ s Karmasof the past.

Before proceeding further in this regard it is necessary to mention here about the myth of Ardhnarishwar, Marriage & Its Creation, in regard to the institution of marriage.

This world is said to have begun with Brahma’s ‘Manas Shrishti’, when Brahma willed and a life in the shape of a human being viz, a Pursh" came to existence. This process of creation was loaded with two serious shortcomings. The first such short coming was that with the Brahma’s desire only ‘Pursh’ could get created, who was to carry and perform prayers, perform ‘hawans’ (yagnas) and then attain ‘Moksha’. The second shortcoming was that this process was not a self regenerating and hence there was stagnation, decrease in population and ultimately back to zero population. Therefore, Brahma had to create Pursh (men) again and again. This lead to creation of humans through sex, known as ‘Maithun Shrishti’. However all powerful Creator

‘The Brahma’ is said to have been at a loss as to how to create a woman. He had a realization that in this regard he will have to seek the guidance and blessings of Lord Shiva".

    Story of Ardhnarishwar.

Lord Shiva responded to the repeated appeals of the Lord Brahma in this regard and took the form of ‘Ardhnarishwar and subsequently ‘Shiva Devi’ came in to existence. Lord Brahma pleaded to her and put forward his difficulties, seeking her grace to grant him the ability to create a woman. On being pleased with his prayers ‘Shiva Devi’ emitted a divine light from between her eyes, which took the form of ‘Shakti’ and entered Lord Brahma’s heart and gave him with the ability to create woman. ‘Shiva Devi’ also agreed to Lord Brahma’s request to be born as Daksha’s daughter. But for ‘Maithun Shristi’ to be successfully implemented it was important for men and women to get attracted to each other. Thus all devtas approached ‘Kamdev’ for help in getting ‘Mahadev Shanker’ attracted towards ‘Parvati’ and initiating ‘Maithun Shrishti’.

    ‘Kamdev’ reduced to Ashes.

‘Kamdev’ followed by ‘Devtas’ set out to ‘Kailash’, where ‘Lord Shiva’ was engrossed in his ‘Tapasya’. After ‘Kamadev’ along with his friend ‘Vasant’ aimed his arrow at Lord Shiva, He felt attracted towards Parvati. This surprised him and he wondered as to what was the cause of this distraction and disturbance in his cosmic meditation. His probe in all directions led him to see ‘Kamdev’, on his left with his bow and arrow to aim at Lord Shiva. This irked Lord Shiva so much, that he with his cosmic powers reduced the Kamdeva to ashes. Lord Shiva was persuaded by Parwati and sought his grace and blessings for the Kamdeva. Lord Shiva blessed and said that Kamdeva would take a human form after Lord Vishnu takes Avtar as Lord Sri Krishna and would be born out of the Rukhmani’s womb. Lord Shiva said that He would be named as ‘Pradymn’, but till it happens he would enter every beings heart in the form of ‘Ananda’. This led to the beginning of ‘creation through sex’. After this to safe guard and self regulate the human race as also to maintain the sanctity of marriage and sanctity of its institution in the society, certain social, legal and moral codes were enforced and Manusmriti elaborates it in its codes in detail.

    Manusmirti.

In ancient times a human being on an average was supposed to have a life span of 100 years. This span of life was equally divided into four parts. Each such part was denominated as an ‘Ashram’. These four ‘Ashrams’ were classified as ‘Brahamchary’, ‘Grihasta’, ‘Vanprastha’ and ‘Sanyasa’. Out of these Grahastha is the span when a person gets married and creates a family and lives a family life, as also discharges his duties towards the society. This therefore is the most important ‘Ashram’ (Span), from the social point of view, which is scrutinized keenly by one and all.

The Shastra’ s lay down marriage as a sacred duty which entails both social and religious obligations. Manusmiriti lays down certain codes pertaining to the marriages with certain do’s and don’ ts involved in the institution of marriage. These mostly relate to the age of marriage, responsibilities of marriage, and respect for woman after marriage, maintaining of mutual cordial relationships after the marriage, love for each other in the act of marriage, maintaining of a decent family life with good social standards after the marriage, sincerity and honesty to each other after marriage. This is just a summarized form of these norms and there are detailed codified norms mentioned in the Manusumriti for the act of marriage as also for the institution of marriage. In the modern times as well we have defined laws which regulate legally the bondages of marriage between the two marrying or married partners.

Marriage is one of the most sacred and pious social events of life in the context of Indian culture. It is solemnized to become a vital bond between the two marrying partners who are mostly two different human souls of opposite sex. It can thus fill one’s life with immense and perpetual joy or it can mean otherwise as well. How to synthesize it astrologically? Vedic astrology has the answer. It has in fact a cosmic relevance for the continuance of the mankind and humanity in the universe. Thus the subject of marriage is not so simple, as it is normally being taken. The union of the two persons of opposite sexes makes the beginning or the commissioning of a new family. The family grows by the birth of the children which is a direct manifestation of destiny. So marriage and matters related to it are destined or destiny related as perShastra’ s and Vedic philosophy, which is the crux of the human existence. There is a well known saying that says that the"Marriages are settled in heaven and celebrated on Earth". So the importance of the faculty of marriage can well be understood as a subject of one’s destiny.

Marriage is a part of our culture almost since the creation of humanity. It is a socially approved union ship or relationship between two individuals of opposite sex, to call themselves as life partners after marriage.: The Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica define marriage as:"Marriage, is a legally and socially sanctioned union, usually between a man and a woman, that is regulated by laws, rules, customs, beliefs, and attitudes that prescribe the rights and duties of the partners and accords status to their offspring (if any). The universality of marriage within different societies and cultures is attributed to the many basic social and personal functions for which it provides structure, such as sexual gratification and regulation, division of labour between the sexes, economic production and consumption, and satisfaction of personal needs for affection, status, and companionship. Perhaps its strongest function concerns procreation, the care of children and their education and socialization, and regulation of lines of descent. Some form of marriage has been found to exist in all human societies, past and present. Its importance can be seen in the elaborate and complex laws and rituals surrounding it. The main legal function of marriage is to ensure the rights of the partners with respect to each other and to ensure the rights and define the relationships of children within a community. Marriage has historically conferred a legitimate status on the offspring, which entitled him or her to the various privileges set down by the traditions of that community, including the right of inheritance. Until the late 20th century, marriage was rarely a matter of free choice. In Western societies love between spouses came to be associated with marriage, but even in Western cultures (as the novels of writers such as Henry James and Edith Wharton attest) romantic love was not the primary motive for matrimony in most eras, and one’s marriage partner was carefully chosen". But the situation now is very much different particularly in the Western world. As per Oriental and Indian culture, most of the marriages are performed as per specific and rituals and traditions of various religions and sects. But erosion in this regard has already set in, in these regions too. As per the Indian concept of marriage, every society within this country, are having certain own conventions and norms to be followed for marriages. These norms while not being uniform throughout the country, as the Indian society is multi religious and cultured; yet, every society has its own norms and conventions for marriages. But during the last quarter of the 20th century, the society is witnessing a rapid change in the social circles and set ups.

The institution of marriage in all probability is devised by the nature to ensure the continuance of humanity and mankind upon earth. In one’s life time it is one of the major achievements of a person, which is supposed to bestow a family and a family life to a person, thus regularize his life with a responsibility and discipline to follow a set of rules of family life and thus live a disciplined life, apart from the enjoying the bliss of one’s sexual urge in a safe manner. It is an outcome of one’ s Karmas of the past, which regulates and governs the life pattern of a person in this life. A person, who is blessed with the opportunity of having a good and a peaceful married life, will be able to contribute his share of responsibility towards the society at large in a better and constructive form.

In our Indian culture when purely the domestic and the socially wetted marriages occur, when marriage is taken as a sacred institution, there is an assumption that love between the partners comes after marriage, and much thought is given to the socioeconomic advantages accruing to the larger family from the match. But in the areas where a small or a nuclear family predominates, young adults usually choose their own mates as life partners mostly. It is assumed that love precedes and decides one’s marriage, and less thought is normally given to the socioeconomic aspects of the match.

Coming to the astrological part of marriage, as applicable to the Indian culture, the most active period of life in a person’s life is mostly between the age groups of 25 years to 50 years. This is the period when one tries to grow in life in all respects, when the development of a family is also a prime consideration in this regard. Development of family for a person comes only with his/her marriage. With the urge to develop a family, one needs a permanent life partner in the shape of a spouse, the one who takes one’s care for his/her other desires too, which includes the sexual part of the desire. It is because of this fact that while the Ascendant (lagna) represents the self, the house opposite to it, the 7th house has been allotted to one’s spouse. Marriage is basically a union of two un-known persons which is indicated in a birth chart by the 1st house and the 7th house respectively.

The 7th house ruling the matrimonial matters is the middle house in a horoscope, sandwiched between the house of enemy and death (6th and the 8th house). This is very much significant in the matters of marriage. After marriage, a person has a family to look after which needs protection of all sorts. Society will pounce upon the person if the person or the spouse makes a wrong move. Economic factors will draw him into a vicious circle of problems unless he is careful. The rearing of the children in a proper way and an overall maintenance of the family in a dignified way denotes that a person has to gear himself/herself up to a defensive posture. Thus the positioning of the 7th house between the house of enemy and death appears quite significant in itself. It is equally known as theKalatra Bhava. The union of the two persons makes the beginning or the commissioning of a new family represented by the 2nd house. The happiness and prosperity of this family is represented by the 4th house. The family grows by the birth of the children which is a direct manifestation of destiny and mental aptitude represented by the 5th house. The longevity of the married life is represented by the 8th house. The mutual conjugal relationship after marriage is represented by the 12th house. These are as per the Parashara principles in this regard. This has been discussed in detail in the relevant chapters to follow.

As per Jaimini parameters, the most important pointers in regard to marriage are, Dara Karka, Gnati Karka, Dara Karka Navamasha, Uppa-Pada lagna, Aruda of the 7th house known as Dara Pada (Kalatra Pada). Dara Karka is the indicator of marriage and partnership in general. It is equally known as the Stri Karka as well. Gnati Karka is the indicator of strife, disease, hardships, bottlenecks and impediments etc. It indicates spiritual sadhana as well. Dara Karka Navamsha is the sign in which the Dara Karka (DK) is placed in the Navamsha chart. It is symbolically known as (DKN). It has enough relevance as per Jaimini Astrology in respect of marriage and the marital status and affairs. Any malefic conjunction or aspect on it will mean some problem in the marital status and affairs and any benefic conjunction or aspect on it will be quite favourable for the situation of the marriage, marital status and affairs. Uppa-Pada lagna has enough of relevance and significance in the matters of the marriage and the married life. Uppa-Pada is the Pada of the 12th house. The auspiciousness of the Uppa-Pada lagna confers happiness from the spouse, viz. the life partner. The reverse will be the case and situation if Uppa-Pada is conjunct or aspected by malefics and one will not have happiness from one’s spouse which in other words means that the marital status and affairs will not be good.). Dara Pada showing the Arudha of the of the 7th house which is known as Kalatra Pada as well, is also very much essential, important and pertinent for ascertaining the prospects (good or bad) of marriage in its various aspects. The proper and appropriate considerations of the Uppa-Pada and the Dara Pada in a birth chart are essentially valuable for understanding the conditions applying in marriage (good or bad) as also to know about the behaviour of the spouse. It has been explained in detail in the chapters to follow.

Navamasha chart has enough of relevance as a divisional chart for checking the marriage parameters. If rashi chart represents the body of a person, the Navamsha chart represents the back bone thereof.

The main determinants of marriage known as significators (Karkas), are Venus and Jupiter, when Venus is considered as a significator of marriage for males and the Jupiter is considered as a significator for females. Moon and Rahu also play a vital role in the matter of marriages. A good position or placement of these significators in a birth chart can bestow a good and a timely marriage. On the opposite side if these are weak and ill placed, it can mean a troublesome marriage. Venus is the most important planet for marriage and married life happiness. Venus is the planet of relationship and love. The role of Venus being the planet of love, romance, sex and beauty has a significant role to play in marriages. It owns the 7th house of the Kal-Pursha Kundali, thus a natural significator of marriage. So it plays a significant part in the matters of love marriage in a birth chart. Good Venus placement in a birth chart is a boon for a happy marriage. If Venus is debilitated, afflicted by malefic planets or is retrograde, it may cause marital disharmony.

The role of Mars is also important in marriage. The lagna represents the body, the Moon represents the mind and Venus represents attraction, love and sexual pleasure. Mars represents the valour for sexual pleasure. Whereas Venus represents passion for sex, Mars represents Valour for sexual pleasure. Therefore, the role of Mars and Venus is very much vital and important in the institution of marriage astrologically, where the conjugal bliss is the first priority

Placement of Mars in certain houses of a horoscope is termed as a Kuja–Doshaor a Mangali-Dosha. Adverse Mars is known to sow the seeds of discontent in one’s married life. If the malefic influence of Mars is sever, it may cause a lot of trouble in one’s married life, which is commonly called as ‘Mangal Dosha or Kuja Dosha’. Mars is supposed to give rise to Mangal Dosha, if it is placed in the 1st house, 2nd house, 4th house, 7th house, 8th house or the 12th house of a birth chart. It has been discussed in detail in further chapters to follow.

The role of Jupiter in a horoscope is equally very much vital in regard to one’s marriage, particularly the feminine gender. Jupiter is of much importance to our lives, as for as astrology is concerned. Jupiter is known asJeeva-Karka, viz, the planet which bestows of life."Our Jyotish Guru Sh. K.N.Rao says that Jupiter’s aspect is Ganga Water consecrating whatever it is sprinkled upon".

The benevolence of Jupiter is an established fact of astrology. Thus a well placed Jupiter in a birth chart is a boon in all the spheres of life, as also in the sphere of one’s marriage. Jupiter indicates children, wisdom, fortune and higher knowledge too. It is believed that the association of Jupiter or an aspect of Jupiter on Mars neutralizes the adverse affects of Mars for marriage. But it is equally said that Mars in the signs of Jupiter, or aspected by Jupiter is not considered good for marriage. Saravali by Kalayan Verma, has mentioned a lot about the relationship of Mars and Jupiter. Particularly in the case of females, where Jupiter is the significator of marriage, it has been seen such a situation of Mars and Jupiter compounds the problems of marriage, if related to the 7th house or the 7th lord. While Jupiter represents the husband of a female as the significator of marriage and getting linked to Mars attains a Dosha, thus this planetary position of Jupiter and Mars is not auspicious for females. However this has to be taken liberally and not literally. It is an issue of further research.

The major issues in the matters of marriage need to be studied, along with the prominent problems linked to the process of marriage, which a person wants to know from an astrologer. As already mentioned earlier that marriage is an outcome of one’s ‘karmic’ outcomes of one’s past births. An astrologer should be very well versed with the subject of astrology to delineate all such ‘Karmic’ flaws if any, when a situation arises about some distress in one’s marriage. It is not the distress alone in marriage which has to be identified. There can be other quarries too, which an astrologer shall have to face while scrutinizing the likely factors in regard to one’s marriage, like the quality of one’s marriage, harmony or disharmony in marital status, actual timing of marriage, reasons for delayed or denied marriage, causes of distress in marriage, unconventionality in marriage like inter cast marriage, inter religious marriage where the factor of love marriage is mostly involved, longevity of marriage both in respect of smooth continuity of marriage or break in marriage. Longevity of marriage has another dimension as well, which is related to the personal longevity in age of either partners of marriage viz, widowhood or widower hood of the marrying partners. The other peripheral issues in marriage can be categorized as extra marital affairs, like second marriage or multiple marriages etc.

In this regard a sound knowledge of astrology by an astrologer is needed to locate such problems from the birth charts and advise the concerned accordingly. Lack of harmony in marital status for a married couple because of any reason creates a lot of mental agony and distress giving rise to various conflicts between them. Such conflicts lead to a separation too. In this regard proper counseling by a learned astrologer can work as an effective guide to the person concerned to save him or her to a great extent from the disasters of marital distress.

In this context various chapters of this book provide an exhaustive and explanatory over view of the issues related to marriage and its longevity which are detailed as under:

This author is deeply sublimed by the grace ofMa-Sarasawti, as also thankful to her hidden blessings, which made me to make an attempt to author this book. This is my gratitude to the blissful authority of the Mother-Saraswati, on the spiritual plane.

Beyond that coming to the authority of the physical plane, this author is highly obliged and thankful to his Guru Sh. K.N.Rao Sir, under whose systematic and continued teachings in the astrological research class for the last more than about twenty years, that this author could garner some knowledge about the institution of marriage seen from the prism of astrology.

I thus bow before him for being able to write this book with perfection to the extent possible.

    Chapter-02

    Marriage & Its Astrological Parameters

As per Vedic astrology, in regard to marriage and its longevity (Vivahik-Sukham), the basic astrological parameters are as follows:

    A:Parashari Parameters:

The relevant Bhavas and Karkas under these parameters are mentioned as under:

    Bhavas:

⮚1st house or lagna indicating the capacity and strength of a person to marry.

⮚2nd house indicating the structure and the composition of one’s family, one’s speech, finances (Dhanna).

⮚4th house indicating the comforts of one’s family life, mother and conditions of home.

⮚7th house indicating marriage and the life partner or the spouse along with the happiness of the married life, which includes its longevity, quality, prosperity, delay, sexual urges, sexual union, discord, separation, denial, characteristics of the life partner and disturbances in marriage through other causes.

⮚8th house indicating the longevity of the self and the happiness from marriage. It is equally the house of Suhag for a female native and is equally called as the Mangaliya Bhava. It shows the longevity of the married life of a female, which includes the longevity of her husband too. It is also the house of the various events in one’s life, responsible for causing mental agony and thus plays an important role in the matters of marriage. It shows hidden and secretive affairs as well.

⮚12th house indicating the house of marital relationship and this house is very much significant in determining the success or the failure of the marital life. It is the house of sexual pleasure out of one’s wed lock after marriage. It is also known as the house of ‘bed pleasures’, (Shayan-Sukham). It is considered very much important for the marital happiness, so for as the conjugal part of the marriage is concerned.

⮚5th house is the house ofPurva Puniya (House of good or bad actions of the past births), apart from being the house of progeny. It is the house of emotions and the mental inclinations as well. If 5th house house/lord is strong and there may be an indication of delay in marriage for as per the astrological combinations and parameters, but the marriage cannot be denied. 5th house and its lord, decides and indicates the promise of the child birth, which has direct and a significant relevance to one’s marriage.

(All the parameters as mentioned above shall have to be assessed from the lagna, Moon and Venus). Navamsha chart is an important chart and should be referred to as an independent chart in respect of above mentioned parameters).

(Benefic placements of these houses or benefic influences on these houses augur well for a happy marriage and a happy married life, while as any malefic placement of these houses, or malefic influences on these houses will result in marital unhappiness).

    Karkas (Significators)

Natural Karkas (Planets which accentuate particular aspects of life) for marriage are Venus and Jupiter, when Venus is considered as a significator for males and the Jupiter is considered as a significator for females.

The role of Venus being the planet of love, romance, sex and beauty has a significant role to play in marriages. It owns the 7th house of theKal-Pursha Kundali, thus a natural significator of marriage.

Moon and Rahu play a vital role in the matter of marriages and thus qualify as secondary Karkas of marriage.

(Rahu activates the occasion of one’s marriage, but may be a cause of trouble in marriage during its dasha periods if linked to the 7th house or its lord under malefic influence).

    >>Brief Explanation:

1.Lagna is the most important house in any horoscope. A strong lagna and a strong lagna lord ensure good events in life and also indicates good health and physical conditions of a person. Physical fitness is an essential requirement for a successful married life.

2.The 7th house ruling the matrimonial matters is the middle house in a horoscope, sandwiched between the house of enemy and death (6th and the 8th house). This is very much significant in the matters of marriage. After marriage a person has a family to look after which needs protection of all sorts. 7th house is an important house of theKam-Trikona, when the other houses of the"Kam-Trikona: are the 3rd house and the 11th house.

3.Marriage is basically a union of two un-known persons which is indicated in a birth chart by the 1st house and the 7th house along with their lords respectively

4.This union of the two persons makes the beginning or the commissioning of a new family represented by the 2nd house along with its lord. This house apart from representing the family (Kutumba), represents the income (Dhana) too. 2nd house and its lord has thus to play a key role in indicating the acceptability of a new entrant in the family showing the desirability or otherwise of the new face in the family through marriage, as per astrological parameters.

5.The happiness and prosperity of the married family is represented by the 4th house along with its lord. This happiness is represented by the good relationship between the married couple. Unhappiness will come to surface through their bad relationship.

6.The family grows by the birth of the children which is a direct manifestation of destiny, as the 5th house is the house ofPurva Puniya, as mentioned above. The birth of children after marriage is a byproduct of one’s marriage shown by the 5th house and its lord. Since the 5th house is linked to one’s actions of the past ‘Karmas’, marriage is thus linked to one’s destiny. 5th house and its lord thus plays a prominent role in deciding one’s marriage and its parameters of happiness and longevity. The mental aptitude of a person is also represented by the 5th house and its lord, which is most of the times an overwhelming factor for selecting one’s life partner.

7.The longevity of the married life is represented by the 8th house along with its lord, being the 2nd house from the 7th house, indicating its family and happiness from marriage. 8th house is also known as ‘Marana-Sathana’ the house of death. It indicates the longevity of self. For female nativity it is known as"Mangalya-Bhava’ ’, which shows longevity of married life which includes the longevity of her husband as well.

8.The mutual conjugal relationship, which is primarily the sexual pleasures out of marriage, is represented by the 12th house along with its lord. Successful and good ‘Bed pleasure’, (Shayan-Sukham), is required for a successful married life which ensures a good longevity of one’s married life. Thus 12th house and its lord plays a vital role in marital matters and its longevity.

Thus as per Parashari principles the promise of marriage, its longevity, its quality and the delay or the denial factors of marriage in any horoscope has to be seen as under:

⮚For primary considerations analyze the strength of the lagna, the 7th house and the 2nd house along with their lords.

⮚For secondary considerations analyze the strength of the 8th house and the 12th house along with their lords.

⮚For the considerations of the progeny an off shoot of marriage and very much vital to the issue analyze the strength and the condition of the 5th house/5th lord. This is very important and vital to the whole issue and process of marriage.

⮚Conditioning of the 4th house and its lord for assessing one’s family happiness after marriage is also a factor to be reckoned with for a successful marriage and its longevity.

⮚PAC (Position, Aspect and conjunction) of the natural Karkas of marriage viz. Venus for males and Jupiter for females, with the benefic planets as also the malefic planets, is also required to be ascertained for a blissful marriage or otherwise. As secondary Karkas analyze the role of Moon and Rahu.

Other related factors that need to be considered as per ‘Parashari’ principles are shown as under:

1.If the 7th lord, Jupiter, Venus, and Moon, from lagna or Moon lagan or Venus lagna are in the signs of malefic planets like Saturn and Mars, or in the Navamshas of malefic planets like Saturn and Mars, or in Rahu/Ketu axis, their strength gets reduced resulting in reduction of marital happiness.

2.Planets as mentioned above being combust, retrograde, debilitated, or without positional strength may reduce the comforts of life, when marital bliss too is one of the principles of comforts of life commonly known asJeeva-Sukham.

3.7th lord, Jupiter, Venus or Moon linked to the planets placed in the 8th house, 8th lord, lord of the 22nd Dreshkona, lord of the 64th Navamsha, may become harmful as these combinations can cause miseries of different types, which may affect the prospectus of one’s good and prosperous marriage too.

4.The seperative planets like Sun or Saturn or Rahu being in lagna, 2nd house or the 7th house, it may cause delay in marriage.

    B:Jaimini Parameters:

For ascertaining the conditions of marriage and the quality of the married life from the Jaimini astrological parameters, the PAC connection of the following Jaimini parameters need to be observed from a birth chart.

    ⮚Dara Karka

    ⮚Gnati Karka

    ⮚Dara Karka Navamasha

    ⮚Uppa-Pada lagna.

⮚Aruda of the 7th house known as Dara Pada (Kalatra Pada),

    ⮚Karkamsha in birth chart.

    ⮚Swamsha.

    Brief Explanation:

1.Dara Karka is the indicator of marriage and partnership in general. It is equally known as the Stri karka as well. Any malefic affliction on it as per Jaimini parameters will mean some problem in the marital status of a person.

2.Gnati Karka is the indicator of strife, disease, hardships, bottlenecks and impediments etc. It indicates spiritual sadhana as well. It’s getting linked to any of the karkas as per Jaimini parameters pertaining to marriage particularly the DK, will foster trouble in the sphere of one’s marriage.

3.Dara Karka Navamsha is the sign in which the Dara Karka (DK) is placed in the Navamsha chart.

4.Uppa-Pada lagna as per chapter ‘30’ of "Brihat Prashara Hora Shastra", where in the Uppa-Pada is defined and explained in detail. It has enough of relevance and significance in the matters of the marriage and the married life. Uppa-Pada is the Pada of the 12th house. The auspiciousness of the Uppa-Pada lagna confers happiness from the spouse, viz. the life partner. This Uppa-Pada lagna is also called Gauda Pada. If Uppa-Pada is conjunct or aspected by benefic planets, one will have full happiness from one’s spouse and progeny. The reverse will be the case and situation if Uppa-Pada is conjunct or aspected by malefics and one will not have happiness from one’s spouse which in other words means that the marital status and affairs will not be good. Similarly the 7th house from the Uppa-Pada Lagna is of equal importance and any malefic influence on it will infer some kind of problem in the marital situation and marital status. But reverse will be the case if there is a benefic influence on it and the marriage and the marital situation and status is supposed to be prosperous and good.

The second most important Arudha after the Arudha of Lagna (Pradhana Arudha) is the Uppa-Padha lagna (the Arudha of the 12th house). The 12th house is the house of loss or the house where one is made to give or expend and its Arudha viz. the Uppa-Pada is the person representing it. That is to whom one gives the most is one’s life partner and one’s progeny. So from Uppa-Pada as per BPHS one should see the matters related to one’s spouse and progeny as well. The Uppa-Pada lagna will show about the life partner and the relationship there of. It shows the quality and the nature of the person who becomes the spouse and whether the relationship will last long or not. It is equally important for ensuring the longevity of the marriage or even the break in marriage. It shows the qualities of the life partner in respect of temperament, career, the family background and the longevity of the relationship. BHPS in chapter ‘30’ mentions different categories, types and qualities of one’s spouse as per the Uppa-Pada lagna and various planetary positions thereof.

5.Dara Pada showing the Arudha of the of the 7th house which is known as Kalatra Pada as well, is also very much essential, important and pertinent for ascertaining the prospects (good or bad) of marriage in its various aspects. The 7th house of a birth chart indicates as to how one gets related to others and it is one’s doorway to the external world and thus it signifies how one is inclined and related to others. The most related person for a human being or to say a person’s more inclination towards someone else is one’s love partner or the spouse. So the Pada of the 7th house known as Dara Pada or the Kalatra Pada represents the characteristics of the spouse and then his/her attitude towards the relationship between the two, which includes the marital relationship as well. Dara Pada tells about the physical communion of marriage which is mainly the physical love making. Certain Classics like Devakeralam and Brighu Nadi specifies in various Shalokas the essence and the effects of various planets either through conjunction or aspects with or on the Dara Pada in so for the effectiveness, the nature and the longevity of the relationship with one’s spouse in respect of the marital situation is concerned. The proper and appropriate considerations of the Uppa-Pada and the Dara Pada in a birth chart are essentially valuable for understanding the conditions applying in marriage (good or bad) as also to know about the behavior of the spouse.

6.Karkamsha is the Navamasha sign occupied by the Atma Karka in the Navamsha chart and then making that sign as the lagna with the planets as per main birth chart constitutes Karkamsha. The position of DK, DKN, and the GK in respect to the Karkamsha Lagna and its lord has enough of significance in deciding the quality and the caliber of one’s marriage and its longevity. For example BHPS says that if Moon and Jupiter are in the 7th house from Karkamsha lagna the person will beget a very beautiful wife. Venus in the said house denotes a sensuous wife while Mercury indicates a well versed wife in arts. The Sun so related will give a wife who will be confined to domestic works only. Saturn so related denotes a wife of a higher age bracket or even a pious/sick wife. Rahu in this context will bring a widow in marriage.

Our Jyotish Guru, Sh.K.N.Rao says that in Karkamsha if it is found that from AK, DK or DKN the 7th house has any connection with the Saturn, then there is going to be a difference of age between the two married partners. Thus Karkamsha has thus enough relevance and importance in the matter of marriages.

7.Swamsha is taking the sign of Atma Karka as per Navamasha chart as the lagna and then placing the planets as per the Navamasha chart in this chart. The 7th house from the Swamsha lagna has enough significance in marriage matters.

Thus as per Jaimini considerations all the above mentioned Jaimini Parameters will give sufficient clues about the various aspects of marriage, its longevity, the characteristics of different spouses, delays or denials in marriage apart from other marriage related issues. The matching of the two birth charts as per the Jaimini Parameters too should have equal considerations for the relevant Jaimni Karkas and Parameters.

A composite approach of both Parashari principles and the Jaimini principles to birth charts together, will make a student of astrology, to give correct predictions as accurately as possible about the quality, maintainability and the overall longevity of the marriage. He will equally be in position to prescribe and recommend appropriate matching probables between the two marrying partners. Thus while opting for the matching of the ‘Janama Kundalies’ (Birth Charts), proper care and considerations of the Bhava Milan is very much required to be ensured in addition to the Gun Milan, to ensure an effective matching for a prosperous and a happy married life between the two marrying partners.

(All the above stipulated astrological factors have to be ascertained both from the lagna, Moon and the Navamasha charts as well). If there is perfect harmony of the astrological factors as mentioned above in the main birth chart, but not substantiated by the Navamhsa chart, the quality of the marriage may suffer to some extent. Similarly if the main birth chart does not show a perfect harmony of the above mentioned astrological factors, but is proper in the Navamasha chart then the relations if initially not proper, can improve with the passage of time).

Venus and Jupiter are the principle significators of marriage for men and women respectively, as mentioned above.

In addition to above the secondary determinants of marriage can be categorized as under:

1.If the 7th house contains a moltrikona sign, then its lord can be considered as the secondary determinant of marriage. If the 7th house does not contain a mooltrikona sign, then the lord of the next mooltrikona sign from the relevant ascendant will be considered as the secondary determinant of marriage. Thus as per above analogy, for the each ascendant the secondary determinants of marriage are categorized as under:

⮚If the principle significators of marriage and the secondary determinants of marriage are strong enough, there being no malefic affliction to the principle houses of marriage particularly the 7th house and its lord, one’s marriage is bound to take place conveniently at its own time.

⮚In addition to above the Trimshamsha (D-30) is an important divisional chart to be analyzed for marriage and its other parameters.

    C:Trimshamsha?

Sun progresses at the rate of about one degree every day and its progress in 120 days is analogous to covering 120 degrees in the zodiac. Manu Smriti teaches that us thata year of the human beings is equal to a day ofdevas. So, 120 days of Sun’s motion is equal to the 120 years of the human beings, which is the full life span as per the Vimshotari dasha system. This indicates that one degree motion of Sun has relevance to the longevity and misfortunes a person is supposed to face after birth. Accordingly Prashara Sage advises the use of theTrimshamsha’ for the determining the evils that one has to suffer due to the past karmas. The ‘Trimshamsha’, (D-30), chart is used to find the various kinds of evils one is likely to face. It is commonly inferred that in female horoscopy, it shows her moral character. But it can be used in all the cases viz. both men and women for finding the same. In fact in the modern context when a woman is equally as literate as a man, this distinction of applying the parameters of D-30 chart solely to women is not right. Why should it be applied to the females only, when the collective effects of both benefic and malefic influences due to the astrological combinations do get applied to all the humans equally in a birth chart? May be that due to the male dominance the erstwhile astrological peers have designated D-30 chart to be applied to females only for its bad effects, when the original postulates of the seers must have been applicable to both the sexes, particularly in respect of one’s character and conduct, thus giving an edged to the males in this regard. (This is my personal opinion in this regard based on the analogy of equanimity of astrological results in birth charts along with other vargas linked there to).

Trimshamsha means thirty and the amsha means division, indicating the one-thirtieth division of a sign. Trimsamsa chart is used to delineate various kinds of evils one is likely to face. The key signification of the divisional charts can be known by finding out the root of the divisional chart, by expunging the multiple of 12. Trimsamsa means 30th division and by expunging the multiple of 12, we arrive at 6 (30-12*2), which is the house of diseases, servants/ service, enemies and litigation (troubles we face in this world due to external circumstances). It is thus used to delineate the misfortunes, diseases, physical accidents, animosity, etc. As regards the diseases of various sorts resulting in various types of health hazardous, can be seen through the placements of malefic planets in this chart. Along with this the lords of the 6th, 8th and the 12th houses need to be ascertained so for their positioning is concerned in this chart. Equally the placement of both the malefic and the benefic planets in these houses in this chart needs a keen observation for analyzing the health hazards and all other conditions of misfortunes of a person.

Since it shows the effects of our past acquired misfortunes within, we must understand that our misfortunes are due to the 5 source of our own weaknesses, viz. Kama, Kroda, Loba, Moha & Andhkara, which repeatedly bring us to this material existence like invisible shackles, binding us strongly and preventing us from soaring high and being free!

Thus it is important to realize these enemies within and overcome them and then only we can be free. This makes this division very crucial to be examined as we are all in the path of spiritual evolution and breaking the shackles of material weaknesses can enable us to cross the boundaries of human beings.

Trimshsamsha chart (D-30 chart), is very much vital for ascertaining the conditioning of marriage of a woman, which includes her widowhood as well. In this regard apart from other astrological factors to be ascertained from this varga chart. (But as already mentioned above, it sounds like a one sided verdict, as it should be applied to men and women both equally).

If the lagna is afflicted in the main birth chart and is under malefic influences and the Trimshamsha lagna is also under malefic afflictions, then the position of marital disharmony as per the main birth chart gets confirmed. If the Trimshamsha lagna falls in the sign of Mars or Saturn and these very planets are afflicting the lagna of the main birth chart, it may result in a disturbed marriage. Benefic influences on the lagna of the main birth chart, the D-9 chart and the D-30 charts show timely marriage of a person.

All the conditioning of the marital discords or disharmonies which get evinced from the main birth chart or the Moon chart and the Navamsha chart, should invariably be verified from the D-30 chart as well. While applying this chart to females, to ascertain the longevity of her marriage and her husband’s longevity, when the main birth chart and other allied vargas charts show some afflictions to the longevity of her husband and if the lagna, the 7th and the 8th house, along with their lords of the Trimshamasha chart are severely afflicted by malefic planets, it may result in the widowhood of a woman. Moon in the Trimshamsha of Mars is considered bad for a female.

Table of Trimshamsha and the Tatwas.

The Trimshamsha lords & deities are shown in the above table, for both the odd signs and the even signs. The deities are Agni, Vayu, Indra, Kubera and Varuna for the odd signs and reverse is the case for the even signs.

These deities have relevance to the five elements of nature viz. Fire (Agni, ruled by Mars), Wind (Wayu, ruled by Saturn), Sky (Akash or Ether ruled by Indra the God of Gods and Planet Jupiter), Earth (Prithivi, ruled by Kubera, the lord of Wealth and Planet is Mercury) and Water (Jala, ruled by Varuna the God of Water and Planet Venus).

In the Kal-Pursha Kundali it is seen that each of the four elements of Agni (Fire), Jala (Water), Vayu (Air) and Prithvi (Earth) rule the trines of Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn respectively, the fifth element of Akash (Ether) pervades all signs and hence Indra becomes the God of all these Gods. So to take shelter from evils as the Trimshamsha represents the evils that befall a man, one has to take shelter under Indra, which is represented by the Planet Jupiter, the Jeeva Karka. It means that if a lagna belonging to Akash Tatwa, ruled by deity Indra and planet Jupiter, rises in the lagna of D-30 chart, it will auger very well and can save a person from the onslaught of misfortune. The luminaries are left out as they are the sources of light and remover of all weaknesses.
