    their future. We have a choice whether to perpetuate the old rules

    of our collective behavior - or to change them.

    The many forms of misery and emotional distress people endure in their professional activities – be they in leadership positions or not – including apathy, burnout, stress, indifference, frustration, closed-mindedness, distrust, and defensiveness, have always been of great concern to me. At times I have been shocked, sometimes even appalled, and I have never been left unaffected by their pain and distress. Why does professional activity, created by people for people, often create so much suffering? What is the root cause of this?

    As a business coach, management consultant, and interpreter for an Italian Catholic religious leader, who for many years carried out pastoral work in Germany, I was given ample opportunity to observe these phenomena from various points of view.

    The Emotional Distress at Work seen from Different Perspectives

    When working as a business coach, I am frequently confronted with the suffering of both employees and executives in connection to their professional activities. The former often site feelings of alienation and loneliness, as well as feeling ignored or of not being heard. In addition, they feel threatened, trapped, unappreciated, or even useless. Working in fear, not being able to give honest feedback, feeling uninformed, working with limited potential, and feeling like they cannot develop, are further facets of this distress.

    I have often met managers who have no idea what really drives their employees, how they can be motivated, or even how to reach out to them. Loneliness, existential fears, loss of control, and feeling unable to connect heart and head when making decisions, are often their concerns when they seek out coaching.
