Prologue

The story I’m about to tell you sounds fantastical, but I swear it’s all true.

It’s the story of how I entered the Underworld as a human whose time hadn’t come yet and lived to tell the tale.

It’s the story of how I transformed from a timid teenage boy to a confident young man with the help of Da Qiang Zhuang, the love of my life. In fact, if it weren’t for him, I wouldn’t be here telling you my story.

Most importantly, it’s the story of how the enduring steadfast love of a good man saved me completely, bringing me back from the depths of despair and hopelessness and making me believe that life is worth living again.

Chapter 1

1394 AD/CE, Ming Dynasty

24th Year of the reign of the HongWu Emperor, Founder of the Ming Dynasty

On the outskirts of Fengdu City, Sichuan Province, Imperial China

The Underworld

We stood at attention, trying to pinpoint the source of the giggle.

I raised the candlestick in every direction, but saw only more cobwebs and more shrines and altars all throughout the main hall.

Da Qiang shrugged his broad shoulders. Let’s just ignore it. Then, he peered into the dimly-lit hallway. I think the exit is that way.

I couldn’t ignore or forget the sound of that eerie giggle, but I followed him down the hallway.

I would follow that beautiful man to the ends of the Earth.
