Heya = Heya - Alexandra Berrocal

    1

    Heya = Heya

    And other poems

    By Alexandra Berrocal

    True Love

    "I’m going to steal

A fry," he says. Outstretched hand

    Large, pale, clever

Reaches out to steal my heart

    And it’s intended quarry

    Depression

So now you have come, with your glistening teeth

First Rachel, then Robin, then Hunter, now me

How often will you take me away,

See the gibbering hulk that remains?

Will I ever feel the same again?

Will I regret the rest of my days?

Do I spend the rest of my life,

Living with a foot in the grave?

Do I spend the rest of my time,

Living with all of this shame?

    Heart of ICE

    "The clock has stopped

Permanently on your case," says the telephone

Is there no place for me in America?

Your words, on their own, are confusing

Your unsettling tone says it all,

Even as my appeal is supposedly

    Pending.

    POEM

Reached the end of the royal road

Began new beginnings with a heart of stone

What did she do with the tears she’d spun?

Carried them with her ‘till her race was run

    Last days devoid of glory

Final chapters of a bittersweet story

These tired verses, these hollow bones

These broken curses, this heart of stone

Eyes half closed, yet waiting for life

All shredded heart to be tread by the trillions

This is the heart of the matter

    Where the cold water flows

    There lies the roots
