About this ebook

Jesus Christ said that our day would be like it was in the days of Noah in Matthew 24:37-39. He said that they were eating, drinking, marrying, and being given in marriage up until the day that Noah entered into the ark and they took no note until the flood was upon them. He was telling us that they did not pay attention then, and we won't be paying attention now.

He warned us by saying that it would be "like it was in the days of Noah." In that warning, there is also hope. Noah and his family escaped the flood. If we pay attention to the warnings, we can escape too, right? Are there some clues hidden for us in the story of Noah and the flood found in the book of Genesis? What must we do to escape the destruction that Jesus foretold would happen in the last days in Matthew chapter 24?

Keep on the Watch is a comprehensive and comparative study of Genesis chapters 6 through 8 to our day. What is revealed by the Holy Spirit will amaze and prepare us. This book definitely won't disappoint its readers.

    Acknowledgments

I want to thank Reverend Carl Melvin (Virginia) for asking me to open up the church mid-week and teach a Bible Study class. Little did he or I know that God was in that decision; for it was that request that got me to pay attention and receive this word from an in-depth study of God’s Word starting with Genesis Chapter One. Reverend Melvin, you were instrumental in positioning me to receive this amazing information.

I want to thank Bishop Kenneth Smith Sr. (California) for drilling in our ministerial class the need to be faithful and reliable in spite of the circumstances. I never forgot how he would tell of his early experiences in ministry, of how he would show up and still hold services even when no one else showed up. Bishop Smith, it was my memory of your experiences that kept me studying, and showing up mid-week, prepared to share the amazing things that I had learned about God.

I want to thank my husband, Felix B. Barbour III, who provided me with the first platform to share all that I was learning by giving me a weekly time slot on his radio station – New Praise Radio. My darling, thank you for believing in me, and helping me to keep focused until I discovered publishing. I appreciate you more than words can say.

And in the midst of all of the men who encouraged, inspired and supported me, there stands an amazing Woman of God for whom I have such great respect. To the anointed and prophetic Woman of God, Prophetess Naomi Martin, First Lady of City of David Christian Center in Clarksville, Tennessee, there are not enough words to thank you for your support and contribution towards the birth of this writing. Thank you for penning the Foreword for this writing. Thank you for your encouraging words. Thank you for letting God use you so mightily. I thank God, in the name of Christ Jesus, for this divine connection. I treasure you.

    KEEP ON THE WATCH

A Comprehensive Study and Comparison of NOAH’s Day to Our Own

Matthew 24:36-39 New International Version (NIV)

    The Day and Hour Unknown

"But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the Ark; and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.

"Therefore KEEP ON THE WATCH, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.

    Foreword

God has burned this desire into the heart of Pastor Jodi to alert all men and women to be on the watch, and she reminds us that there is a divine purpose for all things. The details in this book are very distinctive as she gives a message that in our obedience, God will send us help in our time of need if we hold on and not let go.

In this book, Pastor Jodi encourages us to hear the call of the Lord before it’s too late. Your eyes will be open to see the signs of the soon coming of our great Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She illustrates how loving and merciful God is. She exemplifies through the word of God, step by step, how Noah’s acts and works are connected to us in our culture where there is often a refusal to hear the preached word of God, and where families are disconnected.

She encourages us to be that one in our family that brings our whole household back under the protection of God which allows the overflow blessings of Noah to rain on us during this time before it is too late. Those in our sphere of influence are dependent on us to lead them to safety just as Noah’s family depended on him.

There is a unique relevance in how Pastor Jodi connects the Old Testament scriptures with the New Testament. She compares Genesis 6:4-8:13 and how upset God was with the people in Noah’s time to the people of today’s society, and how they are choosing to reject God. Yet still, in Genesis 7:1, clean animals outweighed unclean animals, which is significant because it is important for those that are on the side of truth and right to outweigh those that are not.

She uses Mark 13:32-37 to remind us to keep on the watch, which is proved to be true in Noah’s day, as well as today. People think they still have time. There have been many warnings of the coming of our Lord, and no one is paying attention.

Pastor Jodi reveals amazing facts about Noah through the word of God. Noah was 500 years old when he began the building process and during that time. It is an amazing reminder that when God tasked Noah to carry out this work, He also gave him divine instruction on how to build the ark.

Furthermore, Noah executed the assignment without implementing his own ideas. Likewise, in our swift obedience to God’s tasks, he will instruct us on how to carry out or execute the tasks, and in the process of our servitude, there’s no need for us to implement our own ideas.

In the midst of carrying out God’s assignment, Noah even warned those around him of what God was going to do, and did not lose focus despite the ridicule of the people. So too, should we not lose focus in the midst of adversity.

As Pastor Jodi asks, Are we paying attention? As it was in the days of Noah so will it be for us. Are you ready? Are you watching? I pray that this book finds itself in the hands of people that have an earnest desire to seek after the signs and plans of God for His kingdom to come, and that we find ourselves not sleeping in this day and time, but rather remain on the WATCH for the coming of His Son.

    Introduction

With the help of the Holy Spirit, I had been studying, intently, the book of Genesis as the topic for my weekly radio broadcast on the New Praise Radio – Christian Internet Radio station (a Nielsen BDS station). This book was birthed from that which was shared during my broadcast hours. I am still amazed by all that had been revealed about God’s love for us, and his justice.

Being that I am a writer, I have also enjoyed discovering God’s writing style in my personal studies of the book of Genesis. I noticed, in the very first Chapters of Genesis, that God would give us a panoramic view; and, then, zoom us in to give us more specific details. I must admit that, as much as I have read God’s Word in the past, I never paid much attention to this writing style until I began to dig deep into God’s Word in preparation for my radio broadcast.

When reading Chapter Five of Genesis, I worked on putting together a chart – a graph that took us from Adam all the way down to Noah and his sons. (See Attachment A – Chart of Ages, page 20.) We learned that, over the next nine generations, the earth became full of many humans - the sons and daughters of Adam and Eve, and their children, and their children’s children.

While the latter half of Genesis Chapter four told us of the children of Cain (Adam’s first born son), it is in Genesis Chapter five that we learn of the children of Seth, the third born son of Adam.

I mention this because I was inspired, while reading of the various lineages in Genesis, to do some research into my own lineage using Ancestry.com. I learned that when the goal was to try to trace my lineage back to me, from the starting point I needed to go forward; and then, once my lineage pointed to me, from that point I would add my own children, and their children. But when researching back in time, and I am looking at, or for, my parents, and their parents, then the search would go in reverse.

Using the lineage chart that I created, we can trace the lineage back to Adam, the son of GOD, or we can trace the lineage forward. But understand this, in tracing the lineage forward; who we are looking for is the One who fulfills the prophecy spoken in judgment of Satan. We are looking for the Promised One – The SEED, who will bruise the serpent in the head, as stated in Genesis 3:15. It is because we are tracing the lineage of the Promised One that the Bible is specific in the lineage that it presents to us to look at. Again, our goal is to follow the path that leads us to the Promised One. It is in the gospel accounts that we see the lineage again. It directs us to Jesus Christ of Nazareth.

Several times in our consideration of God’s Word, we will stop and consider the ancestral lineage of this Promised One. This will help us to stay on track, making sure that we are on the right path; and it will help us to know who one is when we consider the children of Adam, the son of God.

The first part of the lineage that is discussed in Genesis Chapter five takes us from Adam to Noah. We learned that, although man immediately started to break down in their bodies when Adam sinned by eating from the forbidden tree, the first actual death that we are told of did not occur until Adam was 930 years old. (This is not including the deaths that occurred due to murder.) Noah wasn’t yet born, but his father, Lamech, was 56 years old at the time that Adam died.

When you look at the Chart of Ages one of first things that stands out is that people lived a really long time back in those early days. Just think, today when we hear of people living to be 100 years old, we consider that to be amazing. But, back during the time period that we will be considering – from Adam to Noah, it was not unusual at all for people to live to be close to 900 years old. As a matter of fact, the world’s oldest living man, Methuselah, lived to be 969 years old. So Methuselah, and his son, Lamech (Noah’s dad), was the last two to see everyone alive, meaning Adam and Seth, and their children. But, by the time of Noah, man had begun dying off.

As a matter of fact, by the time Noah began having his sons, at the age of 500, every one of the original patriarchs listed in Genesis Chapter Five were dead except for Methuselah who died the year of the flood.

How do I know that Methuselah died the year of the flood? To find out, let’s consider Genesis Chapter Six to get that answer, as well as to learn more about our Heavenly Father and about what life was like on earth back then.

    Chapter 1:

Angels On Earth – The Age of Rebellion

    Chapter 2:

    God’s Righteousness vs. Self-Righteousness

    Chapter 3:

As It Was In Noah’s Day

Genesis 6 New International Version (NIV)

    Wickedness in the World

When human beings began to increase in number on the earth and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of humans were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose. Then the Lord said, My Spirit will not contend with humans forever, for they are mortal; their days will be a hundred and twenty years.

The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—and also afterward—when the sons of God went to the daughters of humans and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown.

The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. The Lord regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled. So the Lord said, I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created—and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the ground—for I regret that I have made them. But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.

    Noah and the Flood

This is the account of Noah and his family.

Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked faithfully with God. Noah had three sons: Shem, Ham and Japheth.

Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight and was full of violence. God saw how corrupt the earth had become, for all the people on earth had corrupted their ways. So God said to Noah, I am going to put an end to all people, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. I am surely going to destroy both them and the earth. So make yourself an Ark of cypress wood; make rooms in it and coat it with pitch inside and out. This is how you are to build it: The Ark is to be three hundred cubits long, fifty cubits wide and thirty cubits high. Make a roof for it, leaving below the roof an opening one cubit high all around. Put a door in the side of the Ark and make lower, middle and upper decks. I am going to bring floodwaters on the earth to destroy all life under the heavens, every creature that has the breath of life in it. Everything on earth will perish. But I will establish my covenant with you, and you will enter the Ark—you and your sons and your wife and your sons’ wives with you. You are to bring into the Ark two of all living creatures, male and female, to keep them alive with you. Two of Every kind of bird, of every kind of animal and of every kind of creature that moves along the ground will come to you to be kept alive. You are to take every kind of food that is to be eaten and store it away as food for you and for them.

Noah did everything just as God commanded him.

Chapter 1: Angels on Earth – The Age of Rebellion

The New International Version of Genesis Chapter Six preluded this Chapter as a foundation for what we will be discussing because this is where we will start looking as we consider how it is that Noah’s day was like our own. We want to
