Two weeks earlier

The night of 23 September was noisier than daytime. An unusual storm raged through the reserve, felling young palm and ebony trees.

From the large lakes in the highlands, drainages rise throughout the area, maintaining the water balance of the undergrowth but overflowing onto the dense vegetation in times of flood.

They formed an intricate network that extended along the eastern border, beyond which a waterfall cascaded over the main estuary from a rocky ledge that overlooked a steep ravine. Standing over 15 metres tall, the waterfall was a spectacular example of the power of nature. The water flowed through two channels, joining together to feed a large pool.
