THE FIRST NIGHT
hen you’re in a state of shock, adrenaline makes certain areas of the brain switch into high gear. From that point on, I committed everything to memory with absolute precision, because I knew I was one day going to tell the world about it. From the outset, I clung to that thought like a lifebuoy. Ahead of me and slightly to the left was a small hall. Inside was a glass-walled sentry box. On the left, a corridor roughly 25 metres long branched off from the hall, with 12 cells on either side.
