The confused bachelor
––––––––
The sky was ablaze with a warm orange tinge of the setting sun. A time of slower thoughts had arrived when my brain would remain still and peaceful after a tiresome day. I had sat surrounded by textbooks and notes the entire day in my room. Though studying petroleum engineering at university was fulfilling enough for my needs then, something felt amiss from life - I didn't yet know I would soon embark upon an extraordinary adventure that would change it all for good!
I picked up my phone to check on my daily updates and landed on WhatsApp. As I scrolled through WhatsApp statuses, a picture caught my eye that brought back vivid memories: an elegant girl with long dark locks and an inviting smile caught my attention; something familiar about her was vaguely identifiable in my memory - until it hit me: this girl once sought my advice regarding an urgent life issue, and it was her, I spent hours counseling and giving hope to. Yet something was different this time; I found her to be more confident. Her radiant beauty had emerged, leaving me puzzled at why things had changed too fast. Her glow revealed that she had already healed from what was earlier disturbing her. I had to retake a closer look and zoom the photo to ascertain I was not lying. A flurry of thoughts swept my mind away as I stared at the picture seeing the changes that had transformed her appearance. What had caused so many changes?
Thoughts drove me to the past. This is the woman with whom I had provided support and guidance during a difficult breakup experience, yet now found myself wanting to open up more in ways that seemed risky, dangerous, and unethical. I feared my feelings for her might cloud my judgment or undermine the trust we'd built. Yet, I couldn't deny their magnetic pull - longing gnawed at my heart with anticipation as the momentous crossroads forced me to decide between following my head or heart! I tried to recall her name. Breendaa! Wait, yes, that was her name. This was Brenda. Never mind how I had saved her on my phone.
I had to reply to her post and tell her she looked pretty and elegant. But wait, this would send her a different message. As I was thinking about my reply, something came into my mind. My friend was recruiting editors, and I thought she was the perfect person to recommend. This would also give me a chance to talk to her. As I typed her a text message, my heart raced quickly in my chest. Though my job offer would undoubtedly make her interested, there was something else I needed to convey: feelings I had been harboring for her for quite some time now. However, as soon as our conversation began, I regrated it. It did not go as I anticipated. At that point, the discussion was polite and formal; no hint was given about my emotions. Due to my fear that disclosing my true intentions might ruin our friendship, I refrained from engaging in further dialogue with her. Doubt and fear made me miss the golden opportunity. This could have been an unforgettable time on our journey together. However, I couldn't bring myself to divulge my emotions, so instead waited patiently in hopes that one day soon enough, I'd find the courage to confess my true feelings to her.
After our conversation, I concluded my chances with her were gone. I made every effort to move on without overthinking what had once been. Though difficult, the pain in my heart eventually subsided as work and hobbies kept my attention busy enough that they
