Eight Perfect Psalms - Wale Owoeye

To Eunice- who was born on the 8th day of May

    FOREWORD

EIGHT PERFECT PSALMS is the third book in my perfect psalm series, inspired by the Holy Spirit to shed new light on extant David's compositions. Written in the style of its counterparts in the series, the book features commentaries and expositions on eight serial psalms from the Book of Psalms ending with 8. A poetic critique featured with prayer regimen, the book is a distillation of my meditations and contemplations on the selected passages of psalms.

David, a king of old, was a sage poet who knew God intimately. In his compositions we could feel the depth of his passion for the Divine. The psalms, mostly written by him, are poems of devotion and invocation; filled with knowledge not ordinarily discerned and worship that moves the heavens. It is why the book is loved and studied by people of all faiths; a universal codex of songs.

Like I have always maintained, EIGHT PERFECT PSALMS ideally should be read with an open spirit attuned to God. To find the same delight and peace I found sharing them with the Holy Spirit, the reader must study the passages like poetry; unveiling meanings hidden behind its lyric metaphors and rhythmic tropes. At the end I am assured of open heavens for those graced to share in these divine meditations of the man after God's heart.

God bless you as you read.

    PSALM 18

    PRAYER FOR DIVINE VICTORY

    ––––––––

PSALM 18, ONE OF THE MOST POWERFUL PASSAGES IN THE SCRIPTURE, is an

invocation of David made to summon the presence of God into his life at a particular period. A historical testimonial, it is a song of victory David sang to praise God for his deliverance from Saul, his arch enemy; which he left for us believers to sing when in travails so that the Spirit of God can descend to save us promptly.

David began the psalm with an affirmation of trust and faith in the omniscience of God. He

    sang:

1I will love you, O LORD, my strength

2 The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my GOD, my strength, in whom I  trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.

See how David adulated God for His power. A poetic sage, his choice of words is made to express the security inherent in the divine; impenetrable, unmovable and sure protection found nowhere else. Any believer who regards God in this high esteem, who trusts not in his or her own strength but in the might of the divine is assured of one thing which David stated in the next verse of the psalm.

    He declared:

3 I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so
