    THE BASICS

    W

elcome to Simply Self-Sustained. In this chapter, we will cover the basics of living an independent, self-sustained life. This chapter is designed to give you the very basic information you need to know and understand, to make your entry into self-sustained living a success.

    Starting Small

Firstly, start small. Decide on what you want to accomplish and start small. If you want to grow your own vegetables then pick one and get to know it. If you want to change several areas of your life, I encourage you to make a list in order of importance and start at the top, but start small.

Much of your journey is going to consist of research. Research your project. Learn what you need and what potential problems may occur. If you want tomatoes, raising chickens, or crafting, that's great, but start small. Pick one craft and get good at it. Start with five or six tomato plants. Care for them and see how much harvest you get off of those five or six plants before splurging for a dozen. Buy two or three hens and learn them. How much food do they need? How many eggs do they lay? You may be surprised at how many eggs you have, or find that you need more.

Whatever you choose, start small. Take the time to get comfortable with your choice. Learn as much as you can, get good at it, and find ways to become more efficient at it.

Some will tell you to ‘Master’ your choice, but I don’t think that’s really fair. Self-Sustained living doesn’t necessarily mean ‘mastering’ anything. I’ve been doing this for decades and still learn new things every day or how to become more efficient. It is more important to become familiar and comfortable with your project than to 'Master' it. When you are familiar with what you are working with, you learn to recognize what is normal versus what is not.

If you see black spots on your tomato plant leaves, you may not be able to diagnose and cure them immediately, but you are comfortable enough to know that is not normal. That is what is most important. Go about your business, then when you have a moment, go research and find the cure. If you are dealing with live animals, I would recommend making the research a priority or calling your vet, but the key here is to know enough to
