1. Return to Brazil
The return to Brazil went without incident, but on the plane Cathy and Caroline discussed much about what had happened in Canada. Even though they were very happy to have known the Canadelves, and even to have got the chance to participate in some courses, an obvious tension remained on the surface... It was hard for them to forget the tragedy Caroline experienced, and especially the fact that the terrible threat was still hanging over her head.
Charles sat down to speak with them in the cabin of the plane. They decided together that Caroline should not say anything to her parents about what had happened in Mauricie. Charles would take care of that. The girl was relieved because she did not know how to talk about all this with her parents. Charles mentioned them that he would not speak at all about the elves to the Jacquets, nor about the ogres, but rather about the head of a secret organization that had kidnapped Caroline because of a vision he had had, and that he was convinced that the girl was his only hope of survival.
Mathilde was not made aware of anything, but she easily understood that something was going on. Charles had been very vague with her when Caroline came back among them, but she had always been very discreet, and she knew that she would be informed in due time if necessary. The only thing Charles had taught her that morning, just before he got on the plane, was that he had received a message from his work and that they were going to move to Ireland before the school’s beginning. She was quite surprised by the news, and even more by the fact that Charles asked her to not tell the girls. However, she quickly realized that he did not want to talk to them immediately because they had been sufficiently traumatized by what had happened in Canada. An impending and so quick separation was really going to cause them great pain... Mathilde had been already sympathizing for them because she had felt the strong bonds that had been created between the two girls.
André and Alexandra, Caroline’s parents, welcomed them at the airport, and were very happy to see their daughter again. Alexandra quickly noticed that her child was not in her normal mood, despite Caroline’s efforts that she deployed to mask her discomfort. Her mother asked her if everything was okay. She confirmed that they had spent a great vacation, and that Canada was a beautiful country that she adored.
Charles proposed that the Jacquets come home for lunch the next day to tell them about their adventures in Canada. They accepted with joy, and left after having dropped the Merlins and Mathilde off at their home.
The following day, Cathy was the one who welcomed the Jacquets. She held her friend in her arms, quite happy to find her, as if she had not seen her for an eternity.
— It’s so good to see you, Caroline!
— It is true that you have not seen her for so long... gently teased Alexandra. It must have been almost 24 hours!
— The time seemed much longer to me... affirmed Cathy, seriously, thinking of her night troubled by nightmares where her best friend was again kidnapped by Vandorf, the son of the ogres’ leader.
— For me it’s the same, replied Caroline who had not had a very relaxing night either.
— But come in, don’t stay at the door! continued Cathy. My father is waiting for you in the living room. I’m taking Caroline away from you because we still have to sort and name all the photos we took in Canada.
— I can’t come with you? I’d like to see your pictures, asked Alexandra.
— Don’t worry that’s the plan. We’ll show you and even copy them to a CD so you can keep them. But we prefer the surprise of the discovery to be complete, so you need to have a little more patience, explained Cathy, who had already imagined the reaction of her friend’s mum.
The girls went into Cathy’s room, while the adults went to the living room where Charles was speaking on the phone. He shortened the conversation, which seemed important and apologized to the Jacquets.
— I am really sorry I did not come to welcome you, but it was an important business call. That is something I would like to talk to you about, because we are all involved more or less... But before that, I have a duty to talk to you about something far more serious.
— What are you talking about, Charles? panicked Alexandra, who immediately understood that it was about her daughter. Something bad happened to Caroline during your stay? she asked holding her breath.
— Indeed, it concerns your daughter.
— I knew it! I had felt it for real and even told André, who had taken me for a crazy person again.
— But no, honey, I never thought of you as such. I just said that you worry too much and that if you were right, Charles would surely have warned us...
— I am really sorry I did not, but given the circumstances, the urgency was elsewhere. Now, I can tell you what happened, but you will have to be understanding and not ask me for more details than I can give you.
— Come on, Charles, stop holding us in suspense, tell us what happened, replied André who was getting impatient.
— To be fair, I do not really know where to start, because it is not that simple of a case.
— Start wherever you want, but tell us what is happening to Caroline, raised the tone Alexandra who had begun to tremble by feeling that what Charles had to say to them was much worse than what he let appear.
— To summarize, I will start by saying that Caroline is in serious danger and that you must consider moving away as quickly as possible.
— But what are you talking about? What danger? Moving where and why? André’s questions fell suddenly, and Charles was forced to interrupt him.
— Caroline was kidnapped in Mauricie, and it was no accident that she was the only victim, while Cathy and Mathilde were with her.
— What?! literally screamed Alexandra, who became pale at the hearing of these words. Again? After Lençois, it cannot be a coincidence! she added immediately.
— You are right, Alexandra. It is
