Children's Tales for the Young and Old 2 - William L. Truax III

    The Scaredy-Cat’s Big Adventure

Mary is the smallest girl in her class. She is afraid of everything. Whether it is the dark of night, or the darkness in a hallway, to spiders, all the way up to the tallest and sometimes smallest of heights. Mary is very afraid of everything. At school, the boys all make fun of her saying that Mary’s a Scaredy-Cat and the other girls laugh with the boys. But Mary was still able to make a couple of friends. One day the teacher came before the class and said that they were all going to be going out on a short field trip later that afternoon to a park that was nearby.

Mary heard all the cheers from the class, but Mary wanted to sink further into her desk and pretend that she was not there. Mary was feeling the knots and fear of the bus ride and being someplace that she was not familiar with. After social studies were done with for the day her teacher, Mrs. Brenner let them outside for the bus ride to the park. The boys lined up on one side, the girls on the other. She looked around and seen her best friend Beth and tried to reach over top of the seat for her hand, but right then the bus bounced and she grabbed Beth’s hair instead.

I’m sorry Beth, Mary barely able to say, I did not mean to pull your hair.

It’s fine Mary. Beth replied knowing how scared Mary was and that she did not mean it.

Beth reached over the seat, grabbed Mary’s hand, and told her that it was going to be okay. They would make it there and back home in time to watch their favorite TV show: Scooby-Doo. Mary asked if Beth were still coming over and Beth nodded her head; Mom said I could.

Okay. Mary said back to her.

Mary still felt that fear growing more and more meaner inside of her as the bus was bouncing along the road. It stopped at a red light and Mary nearly fell into the aisle and everyone but Beth was laughing at her. She could see their fingers pointing at her while they laughed harder at Mary for she looked so scared. Mary quickly got back in her seat and looked around again and seen nobody was laughing at her. No one was pointing at her. She knew the fear was growing more inside of her and that scared her even more.

The bus came to a stop at a quaint little park. It was surrounded by a large, wooded area, there was a vast meadow in the middle of it as an undeveloped area where
