    Chapter 1

    The Treasure In The Attic

    Martha Brown went by the name of Markey for as long as she could remember. She looked at herself in the mirror as she brushed her amber hair flowing down to her shoulders. She thought of how young she still looked for all her twenty-nine years.

    It was Halloween night and Markey was dressing as a witch, just as she had done every year since her eighteenth birthday. Her black cape rested perfectly about her shoulders. As she straightened out the white laced collar with pearl buttons, her hand reached down to clasp the medallion around her neck. It was oval shaped with pearl white edges that sparkled like silver. Inside the center was an emblem of a lightening bolt flash. She looked down at it and thought back to the day she and her grandmother found it in the attic so long ago. She could see that day as clear as if it were yesterday. For a time she was in deep thought as she remembered.

    Markey was nine years old that year. She was staying overnight at her grandmother Esters’ for the weekend. They sat on the old Victorian styled sofa now
