    Introduction

In a world where darkness swam from the depths of the sea, she was a light burning brightly. Mermaids came walking upon the land, thirsting for vengeance, as one small faery dared to use her life force to protect an innocent.

Some people learn to use power that was never meant for them. Some of us are born to carry power and bend it to shape the world. The light resides inside of us and we create life. To be denied by one of us is to taste death. My story begins with the laugh of a child. Pure joy from the lips of an innocent brought me to life. Now I must use my life to save him. My name is Lumi Dustfluffle and I am the last light faery of Faeville. Welcome to my world. Fear not the darkness, for it cannot touch you here.

    Blood Moon Rising

A child cried in the darkness as the clouds covered the blood moon. Howling pierced the night air as the man child came forth. His mother was a washer woman for the queen, and his father was a lowly man servant who worked in the king’s fields. He was beautiful for a common child, and in the dark days of unrest, even his birth was seen as a gift.

The sea had turned on the people, and they fled deeper into the forest, to escape the evil that had risen.

Giving up fishing for farming and losing the strong holds of the shore front the mortals fled towards the valleys and cleared the forests. Kings and Queens rose from the wealthy that once bowed to a legendary King who had wielded the mermaid pearls.

Rumors and stories of the old days still found the ears of willing listeners. One Hundred years had come and gone between the dawn of the siren queen of the mermaids and the birth of this lowly child. Lyria Aquamarine, child goddess of Poseidon, had turned into a fierce army of death that ravaged the land dwellers and drove them into the forests. This child, born of sorrows and hidden from the darkness of night, was baptized and given the name Michael Goff by his parents.

The crying of the child had ended as he watched the adults above him. He watched his mother smile at him, as he smiled and laughed, waving his arms to and fro wanting her attention. His laugh bubbled forth floating on the air. A spark popped into being as the sound began to fade. The shimmering spark floated on till it touched the veil of magical darkness, piercing it.

It is said fairies are born of a child’s first laugh, and that their talents are shaped by the child’s fate. Michael was born lowly, but his fate was set to be something more.

He would become the last of the mortals to ever visit beyond the magical veil. Lumi Dustfluffle was the spark of fae that his first laugh set into motion.

Lumi! Seriously, child why do you worry me so? Jolt yelled out as he watched his ward practicing her slug riding.

Oh, you are such a worry wart! Lumi laughed, as she kicked the sticky side of her overly plump slug nudging it on.

Jolt shook his head as he watched Lumi continuing to act like a mortal horse rider to the vexing of the poor saddled slug. Lumi had no idea that her true talent was in bending light. Jolt felt the sorrow again as he watched his ward. How could he tell Lumi the truth? She was the only light fae left living.

The darkness had overshadowed the others and taken their lives the night she was born. Her birth had punched through the powerful dark curse of the Siren Queen and saved all the fae that had not yet been killed that night.

Jolt, a human pence for your thoughts old fae? Lumi asked noticing her mentors troubled face.

Lumi, I think it is almost time for your next lessons in magic. Jolt answered weighing his words carefully as he struggled to find the right way to guide Lumi.

I thought I had learned all that there is? Lumi asked as she pulled her slug to a stop and made ready to dismount.

Aye, my dear child. All that there is left, but I feel I can’t continue to conceal the truth from you. You are different from all the rest of us. Jolt spoke carefully and his old ancient voice trembled.

Jolt. I don’t understand. Lumi said her voice quivering with fear.

Lumi, you are a light faery. The only light faery left. The child that laughed and gave you life is in mortal danger. We don’t have long before she finds him. I must do my best to teach you skills that I have not. Light isn’t just life giving, it is also a doorway to the seen. Jolt said in a serious tone of voice.

You are scaring me Jolt. Why would you keep this from me? Lumi asked as she walked close to Jolt. The slug free of its passenger took off along the trail towards its favorite leaf to nap.

I don’t want to cause you to be afraid, but you must know what is to come. I need you to trust my judgment, and listen carefully to what I tell you. Jolt spoke in a low tone as he motioned Lumi to follow him into the small doorway at the tree base where he lived.

I have no choice but to trust you Jolt. You are my fae father and have never given me reason to doubt your wisdom. I am afraid though. Are we in danger? Lumi whispered the last part as they sat down in front of the stack of old magical books.

Lumi, your birth stopped a wave of magical darkness that was engulfing the magical realm. The light fae fought against it, but it was too strong. The darkness couldn’t be held back and many died from it. The first lost were the light fae, then others died in the darkness as it choked them to death. You were born of a laugh. As you traveled through the magical veil towards this realm your innocence and glowing form stabbed into the darkness from without. Like a ripple from a pebble on waters your very being filled the darkness with, and those who had not died from it yet were saved. Jolt explained as he opened a strange golden book that Lumi had never seen before.

My life did that? Lumi asked in awe of his story.

Yes. I believe that you did save us. The problem is the source of the darkness still lives. Lyria the blood siren lost a battle that day, but she still is set to make war on the humans. The child you came from is in great danger. Listen carefully Lumi. If he dies by magic in his world you will die here in our realm. You must find him and keep him safe. Jolt said handing her the golden book.

I understand. What is this book? Lumi asked studying the etched cover, and running her finger over the lines that shaped a garden full of flowers and life.

It is the only book that survived the darkness. Some say it tells of how to bend light, and how to use light to open and close portals of magic. I can’t read it. The book will not open for anyone except a light faery. Go on, try it. Jolt instructed with a nod.

Lumi hesitated before finally opening the book. The cover gave way to her and the first page seemed to shimmer as she carefully read the words out loud. Jolt was shocked to hear the inscription. He recalled his own mentor, and how patient Gloria Snuffles had been with him. He had never realized that she was a light fae. The years of her teaching him the art of growth magic were the happiest of his fae life. She was a masterful garden faery who had left behind many beautiful sculpted gardens.

Gloria Snuffles, The Art of Light. To my beloved fae. May this book guide you through the darkness. Lumi read the words out loud slowly. The script was flowery and held a beautiful quality to it.

I didn’t realize this was a hand written book by my mentor. Jolt said his voice sounding sad.

What happened to her? Lumi asked pausing before turning the next page.

She was taken by the darkness. It had engulfed the lands and choked out the life of the fae it covered. She hid me. I was in a small bubble of light fighting to stay alive. Jolt replied.

I am so sorry Jolt. I don’t understand how any of you could have survived. It seems the tales of the darkness speak of almost instant death. Lumi spoke softly hoping to have Jolt tell her more.

Those who were inside of the protective light bubbles were bought time. The darkness smothered the others quickly. Our protection was failing. The magical realm was about to be overcome by the dark magic, when a blazing ray of pure light shot through the wall of darkness and exploded into the tree of life causing a tidal wave of light to burn up the darkness. Then you unfolded your wings and become one of us. Jolt answered her.

This next page talks of light fae births. It says they are explosions of light that are very powerful and can bring waves of new growth to the magic realm. Lumi said pointing to an illustration on the next page that went along with the chapter's explanation of light fae births.

I can’t believe my mentor created such an amazing journal. This is her diary as well as a book of fae magic. Look how she has documented the birth of her fellow light fae here. I remember him. Seems his name was Terrance Seadbellow. Jolt spoke as they continued to study the book.

She must have loved you very much Jolt. Look here at this page where she has drawn a tree and put the names of her wards on it. She wrote my son Jolt is an earth fae. She has all your accomplishments listed with your name. The others are listed as wards and have only highlights of their education. Lumi smiled as she pointed this out to Jolt.

Jolt blushed, and tugged at one of his wing tips. He had known he was his mentors favorite but to see the written evidence of it made him feel loved beyond measure. He beamed and even started to glow and sparkle a bit.

She was the best fae mother I could have had. She gave us all the same measure of care and devotion. I never knew for sure that I was her favorite. Time enough for that later though. We simply must get to the lessons she has written down in here. There is little time left. While time moves fast here Lumi it is very slow in the human realm. The child is still too young to defend himself. We can’t let the blood siren find him. Jolt spoke firmly and shook his sparkling wings.

    The book was very
