    AGAINST ALL ODDS

    By Jodi Colon

She wasn’t ready for the world she’d been born into,

But, from her very first breath she was a fighter.

She embraced the world with rose colored glasses,

Born to an era full of racism and division,

From a very young age made a promise not to judge,

    But, instead love equally.

She wouldn’t allow the stones cast at her to ever stop her,

But, instead chose to gather those stones thrown at her to make a shelter.

She guarded her heart with a wall so big, she lost all

    Sight of herself.

It took years for her to break this wall.

But, when the real work began,

    She began removing each stone,

    One at a time.

    Suddenly, she began finding herself,

And a light began to show,

A light she didn’t recognize but yearned to know.

Through all the trials and torments she had faced trying to

    Reach the light,

She wavered heavily and curiously wondered if she was still strong

    Enough to endure the fight.

As her scars began to rip open and pulling each stone one by one,

Her fingertips dripping with color of crimson,

She knew she couldn’t stop now!

She was on a journey, a journey to reach her inner warrior,

That she had buried so deep within her very soul years ago.

Finally, it was time, time to get through the wall.

With deep breath and hammer in hand,

She knocked that wall down and stood gazing at herself proudly.

Mesmerized in aw at what she was seeing,

She saw a beautiful heart full of love and grace,

    She once hid so deeply,

In spite of it all couldn’t be erased.

With joyous tears in her eyes,

She cried out, There you are!

Softly saying, "I’m so sorry for hiding you, I only

    wanted to protect you".

The light replied, " I forgive you but, now that we’re back together there’s

something I need you to know",

"I was with you the whole entire time just loving you as faced

every battle and took every blow"!

You had to protect me and that I know.

‘Can’t you see?" the light replied,

    "That was the only
