What is biohacking?
––––––––
Bio-hacking aims to develop new skills by combining medical technology and electronic technology and embedding instruments in the body. As will be described later, their purpose is to expand the possibilities of the human being, and it seems that so far they are to update the human image.
For example, there are the following cases. In 2017, a man living in Sydney tried to embed a chip from an opal transport IC card (SUICA or ICOCA in Japan) in his hand and use it to board a train. The man, who was stopped by a railway worker at the time, was fined for not having a valid ticket and was found guilty at trial. The man was a biohacker (a practitioner of biohacking) who called himself a cyborg.
The point here is that the man was not trying to commit unpaid travel = fraud. He was trying to load the chip that he had embedded in his hand and travel at the normal rate, just like we would with an IC card. The charge at this time was that he violated the terms of use that the rail company card must not be intentionally altered or processed.
The reason for the railway company's violation of the Terms of Service is certainly correct, but the underlying problem seems to be the confusion that it did not anticipate such a situation. The law is not up to date with technology,
the man said.
Certainly, if you embed a chip in your body instead of using a smartphone payment, you can do everything empty-handed. Similarly, attempts are made to simplify the authentication procedure by embedding a chip instead of an employee identification card in the hands of employees. Either way, it's technically possible, whether it gets done or not.

Regulation or rights
As mentioned above, biohacking is dangerous and has been criticized by medical personnel. Some readers may think that it is dangerous and should be fully regulated. But no matter how regulated it is, some people are expected to continue to do so, as long as they have the technology. And if a certain number of treatments are successful, some people will participate even if they skip the issue of side effects.
Appropriate regulations and guidelines by experts on this subject are required. Next, I would like to present some issues when considering the relationship between regulation and rights in biohacking.
First is the relationship between biohacking and healthcare. There are already ways to implant electronic devices in the body as a medical practice. However, the purpose of medical practice is to recover lost functions
. For example, epilepsy and Parkinson's disease can be treated by sending electrical signals from electrodes embedded in the brain to relieve symptoms, or by using an electrical prosthesis. On the other hand, bio-hacking has the aspect of further strengthening capacity
.
Next, the biohacker's claim to strengthen his ability can be called the right to manipulate his body.
As long as you don't bother others, what's wrong with messing with your own body?
In the United States, there is a concept called Right to Repair
where you try to repair your own appliances and cars. For example, in the United States, which has a large land area, once an iPhone is requested for repair, it takes a long time to return it. Then repair it yourself, or at least get Apple to publish a repair manual and have a private repairman use it. On the other hand, manufacturers reject them in order to prevent the leakage of technical information or because repairs carried out by amateurs are dangerous. However, there is also a movement to seek the right to remedy effectively, and there is also a movement towards legislation.
In addition to the right to repair
, there is also a concept called Freedom to play
, especially in the area of information technology (IT). I won't go into details, but the idea is that free manipulation of machines, like disassembly, will promote technological innovation. As with the right to repair, there is also opposition from the company, but in any case, it is in a position to assert free practice.
Of course, if a car repaired by one individual causes an accident on the road, others will be involved. Even if he takes responsibility for himself, it's hard to predict what kind of societal impact manipulating genes by biohacking will have.

Biohacking and Posthuman
So far, we have discussed the issues of positive improvement actions, such as the right to repair and the freedom to tamper. Besides that, what are biohackers looking for and what are their problems? Finally, I would like to deepen my consideration.
In my opinion, biohackers seem intent on renewing their human image by expanding
human potential. As noted in these pages, IT companies are trying to acquire telepathic-type abilities by implanting electrodes in the brain, and the activities of biohackers are also ahead of the current therapeutic stage that seems to assume enhanced human beings
