    GOD SO LOVED

No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him. (John 1:18, KJV)

The book of John begins with a declaration of the credibility of the Word. John says the Word existed in the beginning with God and He was/is God. (John 1:1) It was necessary that John, nicknamed the Beloved Disciple introduced the book as such. He experienced the love of Christ in a special dimension. John is 'the disciple whom Jesus loved.'(John 13:23).

Before the verse that will be discussed throughout this book, John 3:16, is an important verse I want us to see. It’s John 3:13 which reads, No one has ascended to heaven but He who came down from heaven, that is, the Son of Man who is in heaven. John makes the proposition that Jesus is the most and only authoritative revealer of the Father. He who came down from heaven has declared the Father who is in heaven. Having drawn your attention to these two verses from John (John 1:18 and 3:13), I will go on to speak on love and the use of those verses will be seen later.

Many waters cannot quench the flame of love, neither can the floods drown it. If a man tried to buy it with everything he owned, he couldn't do it." (Song 8:7, TLB)

The next scripture I will like to bring to your attention is Song of Songs 8:7 which compares love to fire. Love is a flame burning in the most secret part of the human – our hearts. The Bible again says that no one knows the thing in the heart of the other except himself (1 Cor. 4:11). This means that it is very difficult and close to impossible to know the matters of one's heart, and that includes love.

John 3:16 however tells us that Jesus looked into God’s heart and saw the flame of love in there. He returned with a report: God so loved the world. He says that there is a great flame of love in God’s heart for humanity.

Jesus did not only discover there is a fire aflame in the Father’s heart but he told us the temperature of the fire. The declaration made was 'God so loved the world....' He doesn't only reveal that there is a flame in Yahweh's heart. He brings 'so' which is an adverb describing and determining the nature or temperature of the flame.[i]

How could someone discover such a thing? How could one get such information? It is difficult to discover things in a man's heart, how much more God? We will seek to answer this in the next few paragraphs and then take lessons from the answer for Christian living in general and
