Wisdom Calls Out on the Street - Tiffany Steele

    Introduction

The older I get, the more I realize the ugly effects of foolishness on my life. The heavy weight of sin burdens me and dilutes the quality of my life.

I started writing this book because I was not happy with the circumstances in my life. I desired the good life, but I was not living the good life. I knew the book of Proverbs had the keys to a successful life, and I wanted to acquire them. So I started to delve in and decided to write a book on the wisdom I acquired.

It took me four years to write this book—a little longer than expected. I began to write with good intentions but soon realized I was not prepared for the task. I could not write a devotional on the book of Proverbs. It is so easy to read and regurgitate information for people to read, but I did not want to do that. Instead, life began to teach me. I listened, studied, and wrote. Even after reading the proverbs and writing this devotional, there is so much more to learn. The growth process is never-ending.

The book of Proverbs is always giving. You cannot read a proverb a day without experiencing a change in your life. You can read a proverb a day for the rest of your life and always take something out of it.

Writing this book has influenced my life immensely. After penning each chapter, I was convicted. I had to make a decision. I had to examine my life and ask myself if I would apply these principles to it or live a hypocritical life. I found it hard to walk away from the words that were written as the same person. I didn’t always get it right though. Throughout the four years of working on this project, sometimes I would put the book of Proverbs down as if it didn’t exist.

When I wasn’t reading the proverbs, it showed. It wasn’t sudden though. I would walk around aimlessly and unaware of my subtle drift from wisdom. I still maintained my position as a functional member of society, but little sins began to creep in. I began to sleep in longer. I argued with those close to me. I tried to take shortcuts in life, and I gossiped more, just to name a few. These little sins would become the end of me if I continued down that path of foolish decisions. Fortunately, I was able to refocus and continue to walk in wisdom. Like me, your journey toward wisdom may be up and down but if you get up and go again after you have failed, you will succeed.

The truths found in the book of Proverbs are the antidote for a good life. However, sometimes life became my teacher. Rather than learning wisdom from the words in the Bible, I learned them through my mistakes. Having said that, it is better to learn from someone else’s mistakes than do so the hard way from the pain of your own mistakes. If used correctly, this book will save you from heartache. The stories shared will make the proverbs more practical for you, the modern reader.

In college, I attended a college ministry meeting where they spoke about the importance of walking in wisdom.  They pointed out that Christians and non-Christians alike benefit from the book of Proverbs whose principles stand true. They referenced a study where a group of businessmen decided to read a proverb a day for a whole year.  As a result, their relationships were stronger; their businesses were booming, and their finances increased. Applying Christian principles is enough to live a decent life on Earth. Yet, it is important to understand the desire to live for Christ goes beyond the temporal world. To desire good on Earth is reasonable, but to desire good without glorifying the Giver is unjust.

Let’s say you had two sons. You gave each son one million dollars on his eighteenth birthday. One son took the one million dollars and ran off, never to be seen again. The other son used his one million dollars wisely and continued to maintain a relationship with you. You were able to see how your gift blessed his life. It was such a delight. Both sons had the right to do whatever they wanted with their money. The one who ran off demonstrated that money meant more than his relationship with you. He never checked in or showed gratitude. That’s not to say a gift comes with strings attached. A gift that is appreciated creates a heart of gratitude.  Gratitude dictates actions.

As you read this book, you will see Christ is the beginning of wisdom.  He is the beginning and the end.  When the apostles asked Jesus how to pray, He gave them a template.  In the 21st century, Jesus is still teaching us to pray.  The book of Proverbs is a compass that teaches us how to pray and what to pray for.  Prayer makes all the difference in the world. Yet, it can be the hardest thing to do. For that reason, I included a prayer for each chapter, modeled after the Lord’s Prayer,

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come; Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
