Addressing Adolescence as ‘Autism’

Doctors for Clinics in PHCs

From being a mere concern of teenage blues and parent-child tug-of-wars, adolescence – described by one doctor as a sort of autism – has graduated to become an issue of State concern.  Besides discussing socio-psychological issues involving teenagers, pediatricians participating in an ‘Adolescent Training Programme’ here today called for State health interventions to tackle the ‘problem’, setting up adolescent clinics in public health centres.

The one-day programme on adolescent medicine was organized by the Indian Academy of Pediatrics and its Adolescent Chapter – Tamil Nadu, to discuss issues such as growth patterns of adolescents, nutrition , obesity, adolescent  immunization, suicide and depression, parenting skills, counseling, personality disorders and family health education.

It is a medical, social and psychological problem, the president – elect of IAP, MKC Nair, said at the inauguration. We say they are a problem, but ask them, and they say parents are the problem. There is a sort of autism in adolescence, in the sense that they live in their own imaginary world.  They have a lot of perceived problems. They are real to them, but not important to us.  We have to feel and realize their problems.
