To my mom, Anne. Thank you for your support and encouragement with this project!
Introduction
When I was ten years old, my parents allowed me to pick out the paint color, carpet, and window treatments for my bedroom. Being that this was the 1970s, wild color combinations were the norm. The soft pallets that are common today were not popular back then. Not only were the colors bright and various, but there were also textures and patterns that (thankfully!) no longer are in vogue. I mention this as it is going to give context to what I am going to say next. In the infinite wisdom I had back then as a child, the chosen wall color was that of a dusty purple iris. Hot Wheels® at the time had a color called Spectroflame Lavender,
which resembled more of a neon pink. This was the color I went with for my short shag carpeting. And to finish it all off, the drapes were a bright velvet lipstick red. No joke. This was it.
My bed at that time was just slightly more comfortable than what cavemen had.
Needless to say, between these screaming hues, and the Stone Age mattress, it was no wonder I wasn’t sleeping very sound like a young person.
Over the course of time, and without giving it too much direct thought regarding sleep, I changed the colors of the bedroom to a neutral, muted pallet. I began to notice a more relaxed space that was more enjoyable to be in. It felt more comfortable. As even more time went by, I began changing other aspects of my life as well, not necessarily for better sleep, but because I thought the change would be a better option than what I was currently doing. For example, I began to take showers before going to bed, instead of when I got up. My thought on this was I no longer wanted to tract my grungy body into a clean bed. This too added to the comfort and serenity I felt. This is just one of eighty suggestions and ideas presented that will help with better sleeping habits.
This book was written mostly from firsthand experience of what has worked for me. Additionally, the suggestions provided are written in such a manner that you do not have to give up one suggestion to try another. In fact, the more suggestions you embrace, the more success you will likely achieve.
Life today is more complex, challenging, and in many ways, more difficult than it has been in many generations past. So my sincerest hope is that you find this book informative, educational, and, above all, beneficial in conquering a great night’s sleep!
