Living off the Grid - Van Short
Introduction
We have yearned for a more peaceful life style since the dawn of time. The struggle for survival of our forefathers left a lot to be desired in terms of peace, but peace they found in the ample space of the wilderness. Fear drove them to build houses, to remove the wilderness from their off-time and separate themselves from nature. The imagination of man created comfort, safety and peace. This peace lasted, where possible, until it became interrupted by enemies and friends alike, or by illness or hardship. However, the integrity of the home was maintained by the sealing effects of the doorway.
A lot has changed since the early days of humanity. For one, the addition of the written word and later electricity has brought outside troubles to the dinner table, brought news to the living room, and stress to the bedroom. We were of no fixed abode until the Neolithic period when the first farmers needed to settle down and tend their crops. Before this, people moved from place to place, picking and hunting to their hearts content. They seldom met others, outside of their direct community, and didn’t see the need to, other than for reproductive reasons. In fact, others meant danger, and meeting them rose stress levels, stress levels that are best avoided, readying them to fight. Diet and dwelling were simple, and
