Survival is All About Attitude
It isn’t the contents of your backpack that will determine whether or not you survive when an emergency strikes. It’s not your location, the number of people around you or even the type of environment you find yourself in and the severity of the danger.
All these things will affect how you respond to a disaster, but it’s YOU who marks the difference between life and death, both for yourself and anyone who is relying on you to deal with the situation. It’s you, and the preparation you have done beforehand that will ensure your chances of survival are sky high.
Within this book, you will learn exactly how to prepare for almost any scenario you might encounter, either in the natural and man made world. You will discover skills and techniques that transform a dangerous world into your larder, shelter and storehouse and will keep you safe and healthy until you find help – or until help finds you.
Preparation is the key to survival. No matter how dire the situation seems, preparing to handle it will allow you to take stock of your surroundings and work out how to make use of them to your own ends. The unfamiliar and frightening become simply tools that you can use to your advantage and no snow covered mountain, crashed airplane or raft drifting across the endless ocean will be able to phase you.
Within this book is everything you need to guarantee your survival when – not if – disaster strikes. Follow it to the letter and you can expect to be telling the tale of your courageous battle with the elements and cunning fight for survival to your friends, your family and one day your grandchildren.
The Seven Survival Scenarios
Anything can happen, at any time, anywhere you happen to be, but what’s important is not whether you’re dealing with a landslide in the French Alps or a biohazard in the desert. The specific type of disaster you find yourself in is not going to help you make it out of it unscathed. What matters above all else is that you are quickly able to identify the terrain you are dealing with, because that’s what is going to help you survive.
There are really only a small number of scenarios you are likely to find yourself in, so let’s take a look at those in detail and what kind of challenges you are going to find yourself facing in each one of them. Commit these to memory, because the first thing you are going to need to do when disaster strikes is take stock of your position.
Probably the most likely outcome is that you will be near home when a disaster hits, so you will already know what kind of terrain you are dealing with and be more than familiar with its particular issues and advantages. But bear in mind that you could also be on vacation, on a road trip, away for business or visiting family.
Before you leave home, consult this chapter to make sure you’re prepared if something happens while you are away from home. Bear in mind that, should you find yourself dealing with disaster along the way, you’ll need to know what terrain you are flying, walking, driving or sailing across as well as the makeup of your destination.
Forests
Assuming the temperature is mild, you will not need to place focus on shelter during the day. However, you will likely find that you need additional warmth during the dark hours.
Forests generally grow best near water sources, but that may mean an underground well or rainfall rather than a river.
Be aware that the forest floor changes constantly as you move through it and hides dangers such as holes in the ground and roots to trip over.
Insects are common in forests, ranging from nuisance mosquitoes to poisonous snakes and spiders.
Unless you are a hunter or know how to fish, your food could be limited to edible plants – which you will need to know how to tell apart from the poisonous ones.
Both prey and predator live in the forest. Knowing how to recognize the tracks of a bear, a cougar or whatever other predators are native to the area and how to avoid their path is vital.
Cold Climates
Hypothermia is your biggest danger in a cold climate, so shelter is your biggest priority. When spending time in the ice and snow, never leave home without extra
