People are also dealing with personal disasters such as a loved one's death, bad health, unemployment, divorce, violent crime, or horrific accidents. This is a time of great turmoil and upheaval for many of us. Whether a worldwide calamity, a personal tragedy, or both have disturbed your life, living through difficult times can greatly influence your attitude, health, and outlook. You may feel powerless and overwhelmed as a result of stress and concern. You may be devastated about what you've lost, overwhelmed by a slew of unpleasant, contradictory feelings, or unclear of how to move forward with your life. You can even feel that your life is out of your control and that you have no control over what occurs next. While there is no way to avoid grief, hardship, or suffering in life, there are things you can do to help calm the waves and regain control. Chapter 1 How to survive the worst scenarios
Getting Through an Earthquake
WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO SURVIVE AN EARTHQUAKE?
An earthquake is a quick and violent shaking of the ground produced by rock moving under the surface. Earthquakes can occur at any time of year, day or night, and without warning.
Before the next large earthquake, remember these earthquake safety tips:
• Make an earthquake preparedness strategy. Discuss what to do, where to meet if separated, and how you'll communicate if an earthquake happens with your family. Examine your emergency preparations for work, daycare, and education.
• Have everyone in your home practice DROP, COVER, and HOLD ON.
• Don't rely on doorways to keep you safe. Get behind a table or desk if there is an earthquake. Keep your grip until the shaking stops.
• Establish safe zones in each of your home's rooms.
• Put together an emergency survival pack for you and your dogs that includes three days' worth of nonperishable food and water, medications, an emergency radio, and first-aid supplies. Keep in a convenient location.
• Choose an out-of-town friend or relative with whom family members can text to check in.
Know What to Do Before a Natural Disaster
Preparation is the key to staying safe during an earthquake. At home, some of the best earthquake survival strategies include:
1. Make an earthquake safety plan for yourself, your family, and your pets.
2. Establish safe zones in each of your home's rooms.
3. Have each member of your family practice dropping, covering, and holding on.
4. Make or buy an earthquake survival pack. Make sure there's water and food in every part of the house.
5. Determine whether your house requires seismic retrofitting and is eligible for a grant.
6. Determine and repair any possible seismic threats in your house.
7. With CEA's finest earthquake insurance options, you can protect your property investment and recover from a disastrous earthquake. Earthquake insurance is reasonable and adaptable whether you're a homeowner, a mobile homeowner, a condo unit owner, or a renter.
BEFORE an earthquake, prepare your home. Reduce your risk of earthquake damage and injury by evaluating potential house risks.
A seismic retrofit entails reinforcing the foundation of your home to make it more earthquake resistant. CEA offers earthquake home insurance premium savings for suitably adapted houses and mobile homes. In addition, learn about incentives available via the Earthquake Brace + Bolt Program and the CEA Brace + Bolt Program to assist with retrofits.
Know What to Do in the Occasion of an Earthquake
When a large earthquake occurs close to you, you may only get a 10- or 15-second warning, which isn't much time. Prepare for the unexpected with emergency preparations and supplies. Register for the MyShake app now.
Drop, Cover, and Hold On are earthquake survival strategies to remember.
• Lie down on the ground. Gather your emergency supplies.
• Cover. Get beneath the table or desk in your dining room. Cover your face and head with your arms and squat in an interior corner of the building if there isn't a table or desk nearby.
• Hold On. Stay indoors
