    Dedication

Doing the work of ministry can be a very difficult task especially when the work is not enabled by the Spirit of the living God. As humans, we are susceptible to a lot of vulnerabilities that have the tendency to distract and cause us to stumble. The word of God reminds us of the persecution that comes because of the gospel, and encourages us to be of good cheer because Jesus Christ of Nazareth has overcome the world.

I dedicate this book to those who are unrelenting in pressing on in the race of either defending the gospel or establishing it. For the believers in Asia where persecution is intense, I particularly dedicate this book to you, to strengthen your resolve as you fight this fight of faith in the race to the finishing line.

    Acknowledgements

This book is based on my personal experience with the living God. Since my very first encounter with the Most High God, my life has changed, and I have been totally transformed into a completely different man. God gave me a new heart with a burning passion for Him and Him alone. The old life I used to live was transformed by the resurrection power that raised Jesus Christ from the dead, and my ministry was born and ignited from that point forward.

The revelations, impartations, teachings and other encounters I have had with the Holy Spirit are amazing, and it is with sharing them that I hope this book blesses and encourages anyone who reads it, particularly those who desire to do the works of God.

I want to thank my wife Amaka, whom through her quiet and powerful contribution, has been a rock-solid support for me. My life as a servant of God would not have been successful if not for her.

I must also mention Pastor Julie Hall, whom I call my daughter in the gospel. This woman of God spent a countless amount of time and energy in prayer, and helped edit this book. Her superb attitude of complete submission to the Lord’s work has made her another solid support. Her daughter Audrey Hall, added her own touch to ensure the smooth flow of thoughts and reasoning. Thank you women of God!

I will be remiss if my gratitude is not extended to my children, Ijeoma, Crystal and Chukwuka. They have been such an immense help in supporting me through this new experience of book writing, especially Ijeoma and Crystal who sacrificed their sleep to edit this book. Crystal whom I call my personal secretary made every effort to ensure that everything is right about the process.

Finally, I would like to acknowledge with gratitude all the men and women who through their prayers have supported our ministry. I extend a special thank you to my sister Ije for her prayers in support of the Lord’s work through us.

Eternally grateful to my Lord, Jesus Christ of Nazareth

    Chapter 1

    Prayer

Prayer has been one of the most talked about subjects within the Christian community. In fact, in every religious organization—whether different denominations of Christianity, or satanic, occultic or witchcraft groups—prayer is a common denominator. The differences between these groups are their belief systems. In this chapter, we shall cover the topic of prayer from the following perspectives:

    What is prayer?

    Why do we pray?

    To whom do we pray?

    When should we pray?

    What is effective prayer?

    How should we pray?

    Blockages to prayer.

    What Is Prayer?

Prayer is a spiritual act of communication between two parties, usually a human and an immortal being or an object of worship. Objects of worship are deities that humans invest time, effort, strength, and energy into in order to fulfill the purpose of a relationship or covenant. As creatures of love, humanity tends to worship what it loves. For example, the Bible says that the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil (see 1 Timothy 6:10), and those who love money worship the god of money, mammon. Their lives are completely driven by the pursuit of money and the things of this world. They believe that money will bring happiness, peace, security, and fulfillment to them. For this reason, their entire life is defined by how much they have, and the things of the world they can acquire. They submit their souls to the god of money and they worship it. In contrast, those who truly love the Almighty God worship Him with their whole being. They pray to Him through His Son Jesus Christ of Nazareth.

Christ spoke about this in Luke chapter 10 when a teacher of the law asked Him, what must I do to inherit eternal life? Jesus responded by asking him, What is written in the law? He answered, Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind; and ‘Love your neighbor as yourself’ (Luke 10:25–27, NIV). This kind of love sets the foundation for an effective relationship with God through Christ and for effective prayer. Humanity tends to pray to a deity or object of worship that it has invested the entirety of its being to, in praise, worship, prayer, and obedience to the rules and laws that govern the relationship. As children of God, we have a covenant relationship with God through Jesus Christ, and we pray to God through Christ. For our prayers to be effective, we must take the first step to love the Lord our God with all of our entire being.

    Why Do We Pray?

God created the human race with the five senses of touch, taste, sight, hearing, and smell in order to adapt to its earthly environment, and any activity outside this becomes a mystery to humanity. In other words, as humans, there are activities beyond our natural realm that have the tendency to influence our lives. Man is a visible being governed, ruled and regulated by the invisible or spirit world. Therefore, we are a product of two worlds: the natural and the spirit world. We are not just human beings, but we are also spirit beings. Man was created in the image and likeness of God.

In Genesis chapter 1, the word of the Lord says,

Then God said, Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. God blessed them and said to them, Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.

    (Genesis 1:26-28, NIV)

The point is that we are not just human beings, but spirit beings, and for us to fulfill our destiny on earth, we must recognize why we pray.

We pray to rely on an invisible being for help and support so we can fulfill our destiny on earth.

We are creatures of need. As need-based creatures, we pray to an invisible being for help, protection, safety, blessing, peace, and joy particularly in the areas of the unknown and in uncertainties that have the ability to influence our lives here on earth.

    Abraham Maslow’s Need-Base Theory

    Image from: http://www.simplypsychology.org/maslow.html

According to Abraham Maslow, an American psychologist, as need-based creatures, we are insatiable. If our needs are insatiable, our desire to pray should be insatiable. In Maslow’s hierarchy of need theory, he stressed that the physiological needs (food, water, shelter, clothing, etc.) constitute the basics of human needs. Once the physiological need is satisfied, the need for safety and security is activated. This process continues to the top of the hierarchy of needs.

In order to satisfy these needs, and knowing that there are variables outside the human realm with the ability to influence us, we pray to a deity asking for help to enable us to fulfill or meet these needs.

    To Whom Do We Pray?

Humans pray to different kinds of gods and deities depending on what religion they practice. The Muslims pray through their prophet Mohammed; those of the Hindu religion pray to their Hindu gods, and those who practice Buddhism, pray to Buddha. We the Christians, pray to Jehovah, who is the Creator of the heavens and the earth. We pray to the Almighty God through His one and only Son, Jesus Christ of Nazareth. He is Lord of all, and to Him be all glory and honor, Amen! He created all things by His mighty power.

The word of God gives us an insight about Jesus Christ of Nazareth.

In Colossians, chapter 1, the Bible declares,

For by him [Jesus Christ of Nazareth] were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. For it pleased the Father that in him should all fullness dwell. (Colossians 1:16-19, KJV)

In Him all the fullness of God dwells. It is good to have a better perspective of this Jesus and how we are related to Him.

In Ephesians, chapter 1, the word of the Lord says,

In him [Jesus Christ of Nazareth] we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and understanding, he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, to be put into effect when the times reach their fulfillment—to bring unity to all things in heaven and on earth under Christ. (Ephesians 1:7-10, NIV)

God revealed the mystery of His will to us through His Son, Jesus Christ of Nazareth, according to His good pleasure. We have received redemption and forgiveness of sins through the blood of Jesus Christ. This is a fundamental fact about our relationship with God through His Son, Jesus, who reconciled us to God by dying on the cross for our sins.

Continuing with Ephesians chapter 1, the word of the Lord tells us that,

For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all God’s people, I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.

    (Ephesians 1:15-23, NIV)

Apostle Paul was praying for the saints of Ephesus, asking the Lord to open their understanding so that they may know the greatness of the love of God. He asked God to give them wisdom and revelation to know the hope of their calling and the incomparably great power for us who have believed in Jesus Christ of Nazareth. He further described this power as that which raised Jesus from the dead and seated Him in the heavenly realms far above every power, dominion, name, title, and principality in the present age and in the age to come. And God placed all things under His feet and made Him the head and ruler over everything for the church, which is the body of Christ. Amen!

With this revelation, we now have an idea of who Jesus Christ is. He is the one to whom, and through whom we pray. Knowing how you fit into this revelation will strengthen your faith and your prayer position so you can pray effectively.

The word of the Lord tells us in Ephesians chapter 2,

As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith— and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. (Ephesians 2:1–10, NIV; italics added)

We were dead in our transgressions and sins, deserving the wrath of God. But God in His mercy and compassion poured out His great love for us and made us alive with Christ Jesus; when Christ died, we died with Him; when He arose, we were raised up with Him, and we are now seated with Him in the heavenly realms. This is a greater perspective of our relationship in Christ Jesus.

It is very important that we know all the variables that surround prayer so we can align ourselves with them and optimize the full benefits of prayer. No one prays to a stranger. Most Christians have not optimized the full benefits of prayer because sin has hindered them in their walk with the Lord. For this reason, their prayers are not effective.

In James chapter 5, the word of the Lord says,

Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven. Therefore, confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. (James 5:14-16, NIV)

In the King James Version of the Bible, it says that, The effectual fervent prayer of the righteous man availeth much.

To know more about our relationship with Jesus, it is pertinent to know about Him with respect to His relationship with God.

Who [Jesus Christ] being the brightness of his [God’s] glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high.

    (Hebrews 1:3, KJV) Hallelujah!

The main emphasis of Jesus’ ministry while on earth was to make God known to man so that humanity could have a relationship with God. He manifested the power of knowing God as He preached the gospel of the kingdom of God. The authority that was invested in Him came from His deep relationship with God. He wants us to know God as He knows Him. And now, because He is seated at the right hand of God the Father constantly making intercession for us; the pathway for God’s power is made available to us through our deep relationship with Him.

His death on the cross was for our sins, and God raising Him up from the dead was for our justification. As God raised Him from the dead and seated Him in the heavenly realms, He raised us up also and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms. God has brought us to a place of parity with Christ Jesus. We are heirs of God and joint heirs with Jesus Christ of Nazareth (see Romans 8:17).

Now that we have a good understanding of Jesus Christ of Nazareth through whom we pray, His position in relation to God, and our position in relation to Him, we can now follow the guiding principles of prayer to pray effectively.

    When Do We Pray?

Our God is a God of relationship. He desires to relate to His people at all times, and prayer is the basic communication channel by which we relate to Him. People of other religions have various ways of communicating to their gods in prayer. For example, dedicated Muslims pray five times a day. In the book of Luke chapter 18, our Lord Jesus gave a parable of a persistent widow to show that we should pray always and never give up.

And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint; Saying, There was in a city a judge, which feared not God, neither regarded man: And there was a widow in that city; and she came unto him, saying, Avenge me of mine adversary. And he would not for a while: but afterward he said within himself, though I fear not God, nor regard man; Yet because this widow troubleth me, I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me. And the Lord said, Hear what the unjust judge saith. And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them? I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth? (Luke 18:1–8, KJV)

Jesus has commanded us to pray always and not give up. Sometimes, we may have a need; even though we know that God is very attentive to the prayers of His people, the fact that you have prayed over a situation does not mean that you have received the answer to the prayer. To believe that the answer has come or will come does not make the prayer effective until the answers actually come forth in the natural realm. Prayers are effective only when the answers are felt and seen on the earth. We may get comfort knowing that God answers our prayers, but it takes persistent contending in prayer over the situation for the answers to come. Persistence is the key.

We have to contend continually until the answers manifest. Therefore, you never stop praying until you visibly see the answers to your prayers in the natural realm.

Between humanity and the throne of God above, there are satanic forces in the heavenly realm on assignment to hijack prayers. I call them prayer-hijackers. You can only break through these demonic forces with your persistent and fervent prayer. This is what brings the answer.

    What is Effective Prayer?

Persistence Is the Key to Breakthrough Prayer

In the book of Daniel 10, Daniel went on a twenty-one-day period of fasting to get more understanding pertaining to a certain revelation that was given to him. During the fast, when Daniel was very weak and had no strength, an angel appeared to him to give him understanding. The angel said to Daniel that since the first day he set his mind to gain understanding and to humble himself before God, his prayers were heard, and he (the angel) was released to give Daniel understanding, but something happened in the heavenly realm. The angel who was coming with an answer to what Daniel prayed for was held up for twenty-one days by the prince of the Persian kingdom (see Daniel 10:13). But Michael, one of God’s chief princes, came to break the siege so that the angel could deliver the message to Daniel. After the angel had delivered the message to Daniel, he said he would return to fight against the prince of Persia, and that when he goes, the prince of Greece would then come

    (Read Daniel 10:12-20).

Beloved, to break satanic hindrances and blockades to prayer, you must be persistent. Secondly, you must be fervent. Fervency is when your prayer is accompanied with passion. Your prayer must have fire in it in order to penetrate and break through.

Breaking through is to go beyond the point of resistance. You should never take no for an answer. No praying man or woman should ever take no for an answer, for what is impossible with man is possible with God (see Luke
