Day One
You Can Do It Too!
And on the morrow, when they were come out from Bethany, he hungered. And seeing a fig tree afar off having leaves, he came, if haply he might find anything thereon: and when he came to it, he found nothing but leaves; for it was not the season of figs. And he answered and said unto it, No man eat fruit from thee henceforward forever. And his disciples heard it. (Mark 11:12–14 ASV)
And as they passed by in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered away from the roots. And Peter calling to remembrance saith unto him, Rabbi, behold, the fig tree which thou cursedst is withered away. And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God. Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou taken up and cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that what he saith cometh to pass; he shall have it. (Mark 11:20–23 ASV)
In Mark 11:13–14, Jesus was traveling with his disciples, and he became hungry. As he was walking by a fig tree, he looked for fruit on it, and there was none. So he said to it, Let no one eat fruit from you ever again,
and it died.
Now, Peter, one of the disciples, noticed this and told Jesus, Master, behold the fig tree is withered away,
and in verse 22, Jesus answered, Have faith in God.
Coming from the mouth of Jesus, this is a powerful statement. Why? Although he was God, on the earth, he functioned by the power of the Holy Spirit, he walked as a man in order to be an example for us. As men, we walk by faith, and this is why what Jesus said is so powerful. The fact that he said it right after he cursed the fig tree and it died, he was showing and explaining to the disciples that what he had just done was done by faith in God, the Father. It was like he was trying to say, It’s no big deal. If you have faith in God, you can do it, too.
In order for the church to begin flowing in the power of the Holy Spirit, it’s going to have to grow in its understanding of how God works. The body of Christ will begin to experience the awesome power of the Holy Spirit more and more as we spend more time in the Word.
Also, Jesus was showing the disciples that God is no respecter of persons. When he cursed the fig tree and it died, he didn’t say, Look at me, I’m God the Son and because of that, I do great miracles.
Instead he said, Have faith in God.
He wanted his disciples to know he was walking by faith and that the things that were happening in his ministry were happening by trusting the Father (faith), and they could do the same. Quite simply, he was saying, Imitate me.
Sometimes we forget that, as Christians, we are supposed to spend our lives imitating Jesus. Not the local radio talk show host who has never seen a miracle in his ministry, because he refuses to believe God, or the newest television personality, but Jesus. Not just his preaching, but his miracle ministry, too. We are supposed to be disciples of Christ, not disciples of men.
The word disciple
in the New Testament is the Greek word mathetes.
It means pupil or learner.
In biblical times, there were not many schools. If you wanted to learn something, you had to go through apprenticeship training. You would watch a master craftsman or someone highly skilled at what you wanted to learn, and you would mimic them or imitate them until your work looked exactly like theirs.
