    The Chip - C.J. Askeland

    Chapter 1

    Year 2021

Raymond Onslaught walked out of his office with all of his stuff in tow. He had finally finished cleaning it out. About two hours ago, he had been suddenly advised to clean out his office and to get the heck out because he was fired, no explanation, just that—he was fired. Raymond was a good-looking man in his late thirties and had black hair that hung down to his shoulders. He usually wore shorts and a T-shirt, and sometimes, he would wear dress clothes. Raymond lived about ten minutes out of Queens, New York. He had a two-story house with a two-car garage. The kitchen was his wife’s idea. She decided on white-and-red tiles that streaked up and down the walls. He didn’t exactly like it too much, but his wife did, and it made her very happy. The kitchen had a double-stove top and a double oven; the island had a stone countertop, and so did the counters. The living room was upstairs—they had an eighty-inch 5K TV. There were four microfiber chairs and two microfiber couches, with coffee tables around them.

Raymond walked out to his pickup and put his stuff in the back of it. He really wanted to know why he had been fired, but he wasn’t exactly sure how to find out. When he reached his place of residence, he saw a very long limousine sitting in his driveway. Who on earth is that? he wondered as he stepped out of his car and walked inside. They weren’t in the kitchen or the dining room, so the only other place that they could be was up in the living room unless, of course, they had gone out to the garden. As he came upstairs, his sister, Grace, greeted him. She was about sixteen years of age, and she had come to live with him when their parents got in trouble with the law for trying to rob a bank. Grace had long dark hair and wore black glasses. She usually wore blue blouses and blue high-heeled shoes. She was a very happy person who wanted to help out any time that she could.

Who’s parked outside? he asked her and gave her a hug.

Come with me. She brought him into the living room where there were many bodyguards around one of his favorite chairs, and sitting in the chair was the president himself.

Raymond’s eyes nearly popped. Why, Mr. President, to what pleasure do I owe this visit?

Mr. Onslaught, there is a problem bigger than you know, and that is why I am here, he told him very seriously.

Well, sir, what’s the problem? he asked.

The late president, Gordon Thorn, and a team of special task forces created a chip that nobody even knows about, the president said.

    What kind of chip?

A chip that if destroyed could make the whole earth go back to the Stone Age, he told him with a very serious look.

I don’t understand what that’s got to do with me, though, sir, Raymond said.

Well, Mr. Onslaught, you are on the list of very high special forces, and last night, the chip came onto our radar. We had no idea what it was at first, but there were two men in our group that had helped create it, and they knew what it was. It took a little interrogating to get the truth out of them, but what they told us is very bad news. When they made it, they put a horribly poor stabilizer on it, so poor that it couldn’t stop a pin from falling. Well, because the stabilizer is so poor, it’s starting to act up. Reports of strange events have been coming through the system. Like buildings being turned upside down, strange sinkholes opening up all over, and that’s not the worst! There have even been reports of mummies around the area that it was found!

Sir, are you sure that somebody isn’t just making this up? Raymond asked.

No, they are not making it up. We saw it with our own eyes on the radar. These creatures are being created by the chip, and you have to figure out a way to stop it, the president told him.

But, sir, there is only one problem. I’ve been fired from the special forces.

I don’t care! You’re one of the best, and I want you to bring the chip to America, the president said, starting to get up.

But I don’t know where to look for it, Raymond replied.

You don’t have to worry about that. I’ll give you a small handheld radar machine for you and your men to carry with you at all times.

    What men? Raymond asked.

I’ve almost got a whole team already organized and ready to go. Here is your passport. You and your team will leave in three days. That should give you enough time to get everything ready, he said.

Wait, but where will I meet my team before we leave? Raymond asked.

You’ll meet them at the Whitehouse. Here is your pass to get through the gate. He handed it to him.

After they left, Grace made some hot chocolate for both Raymond and herself.

Why would someone want to create such a thing? she asked. I mean, what did they gain by creating it?

Well, my guess is that they thought that if they made the chip that people would think of them as some kind of a god, he answered.

Yeah, but they never told anyone about it, so what did it matter?

They made it because they thought that they could rule the world with it after he retired as president so that when he did, he would come and tell everyone that if they didn’t make him a permanent president forever, he would turn everything back to the Stone Age. But the only problem was that he died before he left office. And after he did, they must have buried it somewhere until they thought that they could use it, he told her, still thinking about it.

That actually does make sense, Grace replied, pondering that also.

Callie Valet had worked with special forces for around eleven years already, and now she was being promoted to the office right under the boss. She was extremely happy about that. She had been working for this for a very long time, and now she had done it. Callie Valet was a very nice-looking lady in her midthirties with blond hair, and she always wore a T-shirt and shorts.

Callie had just gotten off work, but she had forgotten something in the office and had to go back. As she came back inside her office, she picked up the coat that she had left; but as she was turning to leave, she saw that her computer was going completely haywire.

What the heck? she exclaimed to herself, knowing that she had already turned it off. The computer was opening and closing certain files of the late president Gordon Thorn and files that she had never seen before about a chip that could do a lot of damage.

Oh my gosh! Callie remarked. She was so scared by this incident that she ran out of her office as fast as she could, but as she was coming out the door, the president met her outside.

Are you Ms. Valet? he asked.

A-ah, yes, Mr. President, I am, she stuttered, trying to pull herself together.

Is everything all right? he asked, noticing that she was very disturbed about something.

Yes, everything is fine, she told him.

    Okay, that’s good, he remarked.

No, it’s not good, she said, come here. She brought him to her computer that was still acting up. See what I mean?

This is actually what I came to talk to you about, he told her. I’m developing a task force to go to Egypt and bring back the device that is causing this mayhem.

What is the device? she asked.

It’s actually a chip, he told her, a chip that was designed to take over the world. But after the late president died, they decided to bury the chip until they found someone else to use it.

What were they expecting to do? she asked.

Well, what they were expecting to do was when the president left the office, he would use the chip to regain the office forever, and then when he died, someone else would use it. But since it didn’t work out, they didn’t go by the plan, he told her.

So what does this have to do about me? she asked pretty sure about the answer.

I want you to be a part of the task force. You are very skilled, and you have been with this organization for many years, so what do you say?
