    Prologue

Sen. Paul Parker stood up in front of the congressmen. His eyes were bright with a glint of evil, his smile fake as he addressed the congressmen.

Dear Congressmen, you all know why I am here, he began. "Over the course of several months, there have been reports of superhuman-like beings, one of them goes by the name of Raven. He pretends to speak of peace, but according to my sources, he brutally murdered the late president and certain members of his team, like Gale Hangman and Callie Vallet. Other members of his team were not hindered, and I have a feeling that they are planning on doing something quite horrible.

Also, according to my sources, his girlfriend, Sophia, has also gained the same powers as the Raven. Congressmen, can you imagine what would happen if they had a child together? The child would be invincible—nothing could hurt it. Now, Congressmen, I am quite sure that we do not want our city to be overrun by a bunch of freaks, or mutants as other people would call them. And I am quite sure that the people in our dear state wouldn't want that either.

What do you suggest that we do about it? Congressmen Charles asked.

I have a simple solution to our problems, he replied. We create a freak of our own. It's probably not the solution that you gentlemen and women were looking for, but I do believe that this will be our best bet.

Thank you, Sen. Paul Parker, for that riveting message. We will all think about it and get back to you on our decision, but I think that you are making a big deal out of nothing. Raven, his girlfriend Sophia, and the rest of their team saved the whole world's electronics from being destroyed. And I do not see a threat in his actions. Yet there are other people who have brought this subject up, and we have voted them down. I have to say my vote will stay the same as before. Have a good day, Senator.

    Chapter 1

Raven watched the senator on TV, his electric impulses jolted out when he heard what the senator said. He understood nothing about what the team had done for the state. They had saved it from awful people, and no one seemed to give a darn. It made Raven so angry that he shut it off and almost shot an electric bolt through the TV. He had to get some air.

He walked outside and ran beside the beach. The sun was almost in the middle of the sky; the water seemed to reach out at him when he ran beside it. He walked into the cool waves and sat down, letting the water drift up and down on his legs. His mind hurt from the thought of having to hurt innocent people if the congressmen voted for the senator. He had to speak to the congressmen himself and tell them that he meant no harm to them, but would they even listen?

He thought back to the day that he had killed Gale and Callie; he couldn't help but hope that somehow he could bring them back. He had no power over the course of events that had happened that day, and that is what made him really angry. It also made him angry that Prince was still roaming free somewhere like a lion waiting to catch his prey. Prince was an evil man, and if he still had the mind-control devices, he would be able to control many people. Even the thought of mind control devices made Raven's stomach turn. Now that he started thinking about it, he hadn't eaten anything for a couple of days. His stomach needed sustenance.

He walked back inside of the small beach house that he rebuilt and opened the fridge. A rank smell of spoiled milk and food met his nose, and he shut the fridge instantly. There was nothing there that was edible. He walked back out of the cabin and over to a large taco shop. He ordered a couple of tacos and a large soda.

As he ate, he remembered what he had promised Gale before he died; his last request was going to be not an easy task. The more he thought about it, the more he knew that he had to do it. But it almost seemed stupid now that Gale was gone. He finished his tacos and left. It was just about high noon when he walked back to his beach house.

As he walked up to it, he saw a car parked outside. It was a bright red Ferrari. He had no idea who owned it and had no idea what the person who was now inside of his beach house wanted. He walked up to the door carefully and walked inside. There was no one in sight so far. He walked up the stairway and found the guest room door open. He walked up to it and peeked inside. At first, he saw no one. But then out of the closet, he saw a bright red skirt, a woman whose back was turned to him. He couldn't tell who it was until she turned around.

Sophia, what are you doing here? he remarked. I thought that you weren't coming until tomorrow.

I just thought that I would surprise you, she said, walking up to him.

When did you get the new car? he asked, looking into her eyes.

Oh, I bought it last week, she told him. What do you think of it?

I think that it's beautiful but not as beautiful as you, he told her, giving her a lingering kiss.

Sophia looked into his eyes and could tell that something was bothering him horribly.

What's wrong, John? she asked. I can tell that something is bothering you. Is it nightmares again?

No, he whispered. Sophia, did you watch the senator this morning?

Yes, she answered. Why do they want us out of the way when all we've done is good?

John's eyes seemed to hold dark clouds.

They're scared of us because we have access to power that they are afraid of. Anything out of the ordinary to them is dangerous, and they will try to do anything and everything to kill us if the congress vote for the senator.

What are we going to do? Sophia asked. What about…

I don't know all of the answers, Sophia. All I know is that I'm going to have to go and talk to the congressmen myself and convince them somehow that we mean no harm.

The day started to feel as if it were taking forever. The trees swayed in the wind, and John hadn't been able to get anything done. Sophia feared greatly that their relationship could be hindered by that senator. There seemed to be a lump in her throat that just wouldn't leave. She tried to think positively, but she knew that she had to do something to help.

As she watched through the window, she saw a dark van parked about five blocks from where they were.

    A surveillance van?

The thought made her think about a bug. She didn't want to alert John right away in case she was wrong, so she quietly exited through the back door and walked around the blocks until she was a block behind the van. She walked up to it and quietly peeked her head over the small back window. There were five men inside of the van—six, including the driver. And just as she had thought, they were listening to what they were saying.

Why? she wondered and grabbed hold of the handle, opening up the door.

The men inside all looked at her with shock.

Is there something wrong, boys? she asked.

They all looked at each other before one of them pulled his pistol from inside his vest. He fired two rounds at her. The bullets went through her, hitting a parked vehicle behind.

This isn't going to end well, she said to herself and grabbed hold of the guy that shot at her and threw him about a hundred feet into the air.

He fell on the ground with a thud.

    Anyone else? she asked confidently.

One of the men had a smug smile on his face.

Do you feel confident about something? she asked.

Yes, actually I do, he replied and put a pair of handcuffs on her.

Oh, please, she remarked, but for some reason she couldn't break them. What the heck!

You are nothing, Sophia, one of the men said. Nothing at all.

And at that, through the handcuffs, she could feel a magnetic pulse that, if powered enough, would kill her for sure. These men, whoever they were, had found a way to control Raven and herself. They would try and extract their power for their own freak, as they would call it, and take them out with it. She had to escape, but how?

    Chapter 2

Raymond sat down beside Grace on the couch. She had been flunking school, and he wanted to know why. But he wasn't exactly sure how to approach the subject. Her mouth curved into a straight line when he sat down beside her. So he knew that there was definitely something wrong. She was always known to have a great confidence about her, but for the last month or so, she had been acting very strange. He didn't want to ask straight out, but without warning he did just that.

    What's bothering you, Grace?

Her face turned toward his with a strange smile.

    Nothing, she replied.

Raymond felt as if she had put a barrier up between herself and him. Maybe it was because they almost never spoke to each other. His job took a lot of his time, and he was almost never home. In Raymond's mind, he knew that it could be many things, but he really wanted to know what it was.

Grace, why have you been flunking your classes lately? he asked. I only want the best for you, little sister. You know that, right?

Please don't call me little sister, she snapped and stood up to get something to drink.

Raymond knew that she was hiding something—something that he knew was weighing heavy on her mind. He loved his sister dearly, and he wanted her to get good grades to be able to go to college. He wondered if she understood that. Going over it in his mind made him angry that she would even dare flunk classes. He would have to talk to her about it.

Once she sat back down, he could tell by her red eyes that she had been crying. His heart suddenly melted, and he asked her what was wrong and if there was anything that he could do to help. She looked up at him and buried her head in his arms. She wanted nothing more than to be with him on his adventures. He had promised her and promised her that he would take her with him, but the opportunity never came.

Most of the missions that he was sent on were too dangerous, and he knew that if she tagged along, it would just make it worse. He spent way too much time at work, so his sister had to eat many meals by herself. They needed some alone time together. She had only one year until she graduated, and he hadn't used that time wisely. He had put it off in his mind, saying that he would get to it someday but still hadn't done it.

He looked down at his little sister who had fallen asleep in his arms. He slowly stood up and laid her gently on to the couch. He covered her with a blanket and walked over to the fridge.

Inside was something that looked like leftover coleslaw. He grabbed it out of the fridge, along with a can of soda. He opened his phone to find that his friend Guardrail messaged him who said that Raven had texted him. Raymond quickly called him to find out what the text was about.

    Hello, answered Guardrail's voice.

Hey, man, I was just calling to find out about what Raven had texted you, Raymond said.

Oh yeah, he texted about an hour ago. He didn't tell me what was wrong, but he said that he wanted to meet up with us at the Jailhouse Café on the edge of town at seven tonight.

That's in an hour, Raymond remarked.

I know it, replied Guardrail. Oh, and when you come, could you please not try to get in a fight with Raven for once?

Raymond rolled his eyes and hung up. His sister was still sleeping. He'd better wake her up or he would be in real trouble if she found out that he had left her all alone. He walked over to where she was sleeping and gently shook her arm.

She woke up and looked up at him.

Is there something wrong? she asked.

No, not at all, he told her. I just have to go out for an hour or so, and I wanted to wake you up and tell you before I left.

Her face fell when he told her that but then perked back up with a curious smile.

May I come with you? she asked with a twinkle in her eye.

Raymond's first impulse was to say no, but the look in his sister's eyes told him otherwise.

Okay, fine, he pronounced. But you have got to promise not to get into any trouble.

I promise! she exclaimed and gave him a big hug.

She flew up the stairs and got ready as swiftly as her feet could take her. Raymond was sure that he hadn't seen his sister run that fast since her tenth birthday when she was so excited that she ran down the stairs like a cheetah.

He walked out to his Toyota Tacoma pickup. It was brand-new from the dealership. His sister was going to get quite a surprise once she walked out of the door; he had bought it just for her. Her seventeenth birthday was just coming up, and he was going to give her the surprise of her life.

As he stood beside the pickup waiting for her to come out, he slapped his hand over his face. He had completely forgotten that his sister's birthday was today! He had almost forgotten! He was thinking that it was in a couple more days—no wonder she was upset. He had to make this right and quickly too. At least he had bought it a couple of days early or he would have been really in trouble.

Grace walked down the steps and through the hallway. She walked into the bathroom and grabbed her earrings off the countertop. As she walked into the living room, she grabbed her purse and made for the door. She still couldn't believe that her brother had forgotten her birthday. Hot tears wanted to fall from her eyes again, but she held them back. She walked through the front door and walked over to her brother; she didn't even notice the new pickup.

Raymond could tell by her movements that she was still upset about him forgetting her birthday. He walked up to her, and before she could protest, he gave her a big bear hug.

I am so sorry, little sister. I can't believe that I forgot your birthday! he told her. "I tell you what, how about tomorrow you and I head up to the Black Creek
