Author’s Note
I’m sorry if this story sounds really religious to a lot of people, but it’s my life, and I’ve lived it, and I believe in the Lord Jesus with all my heart and soul, and I’m not sorry for that.
This is not religion to me; it is my relationship with my Lord Jesus.
Introduction to Gus and I’s Journey Together
I was born in Lander, Wyoming, and I remember living with my great-grandma Dassie when I was very young. She gave me some very good memories, like my using her good cookware to make my mud pies or drawing on the walls of her trailer. I remember my uncle Russel said that was bad to be drawing on grandma’s walls, and I started crying, and grandma came in the room, and she got really mad and told my uncle to leave her house and that she had given me permission to do that because I was going to be a great artist when I got older. My uncle said, Oh, she’s just a dodo.
And grandma said, No, she’s Queeny Kay.
I thought she was the strongest, beautiful woman I had ever seen, and no one was ever going to ball me out again, at least as long as she was around. I remember feeling so secure and protected.
It’s funny; my uncle still calls me Dodo to this day.
My mom was an alcoholic until she met my stepfather, and they married on January 13, 1966. The next day, my new stepdad told my mom, "We can stay here and drink all day, every day or we can go get all four of your kids and start a new life and raise our family the best that we can." We moved away to another part of the reservation and had a pretty good life; we were all healthy and happy and all went to school.
My mom and new dad had become the best parents any four kids could ask or pray for. Mom was our disciplinarian parent, but we were more hurt and didn’t want to make Jim mad because all he had to say is I’m disappointed in you. You hurt your mama,
and we would try harder to be good kids.

Essie & Jim
I went to Wind River High School, and school was hard for me. I wasn’t that smart, and I really had to struggle to get my C average. I met my Gustifer when he was a sophomore and I was a freshman. He had a smile that was to die for. He was always smiling, goofing around, or teasing someone. Gus told me, after we got married, that he had a crush on my sister Dassie because she was the first person who talked to him on his first day of school. He got on the bus and didn’t see an empty seat, and Dassie moved over and said, You can sit here,
and Gus said he couldn’t believe he was sitting together with such a beautiful girl on his first day. She kept trying to chitchat with him, but he said he was too shy to talk to her.
