It all started with a job at J. J. Newberry’s store in 1963. I was the department head for all the ladies and girls’ departments, fill-in at lunchtime at the lunch counter, I ran register when needed and then was asked to train for office work—all at minimum wage! Obviously, I said no to the office training… Unless there was an increase in wage! Manager couldn’t see that happening…so…kept on doing all I was doing. Graduated from high school, June 1963. I got accepted at Canton college, and because it was just my dad and me at home, he suggested I use his car to go back and forth to college, while my father walked to work on the railroad…decided that wasn’t my path to the future.

There was this guy who kept coming to our house and taking my brother out. I never really paid too much attention to him. He was just always around! One weekend, at the end of June ’63…this guy and my brother and his date decided we should go to a dance. He said he’d only go if I went with him! So I did, and you know how this story ends! Got engaged in September 1963 and married in April 1964… I was then Mrs. Brent S. Smith… I got pregnant end of May, and in September 1964, I told my boss to take a hike! Our first daughter was born on February 14, 1965, until then I hadn’t known when Valentine’s Day
