About this ebook

As a Christian for twenty-three years, I have seen churches struggle for volunteers in all areas of ministries. I know that it is hard for people to volunteer after working and having a daily chore to deal with home schedules. My prayer is that this book can encourage you to pursue God and equip you to be a spiritual servant in your home, workplace, community, and church.

We are the church, and the growth of your church depends on your willingness to serve God. God has given you a special gift that only you know what it is. Please use it to serve a God who saved and blessed you. Let your light shine. Leave a legacy of servanthood.

My wife and I lovingly dedicate this book to all the pastors who cry out for help for volunteers to serve in churches. May God fill all churches to overflowing with volunteers.

To all the volunteers who are serving or have served, you are a priceless jewel for the running of ministries in your church. May God bless you, and may you constantly seek Him for spiritual and physical strength to serve. The devil always wants to take you away from serving. Keep fighting against him. One day in heaven, a child will thank you for serving and bringing them to Jesus. We are all God’s children in His kingdom.

    Introduction

I want to thank you, the reader, for making this journey with me in this book. I pray that God will tug at your heart. It says in Isaiah 41:9–10 (NIV), I took you from the ends of the earth, from its farthest corners I called you… So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen, you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

    Let us pray.

Dear heavenly Father, I want to thank You for this verse that assures me You will never leave me and You will uphold me with your righteous right hand to open and guide my heart to become a humble servant. Give me strength and confidence and show me where You want me to serve others. Amen.

    Hearing the Call

Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.

    —John 12:26 (NIV)

As I sit in my church on a glistening Sunday morning, listening to the awesome word of God being preached by my pastor on the subject about servanthood, I heard echoes of people saying amen in agreement of the great support and joy of the sermon that is heard to the throne of our heavenly Father. Finally, as the pastor is starting to close his sermon, he pauses to look around and starts asking for volunteers in the children and nursery department. Suddenly, there is no amen resounding in any pew. It is so silent that you can hear a pin drop in the sanctuary. The pastor is calling for volunteers and explains that volunteers are only required to serve one Sunday a month and the next turn will not be until maybe six months later. It was a deal, but still no amen was heard.

Children’s ministry should be one of the most volunteered areas in any church. The children are the future of every church filled today by adults who were once children themselves. Jesus loves children. We read in the book of Mark 10:14–16 (NIV), When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs, too such as these. Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.’ And He took the children in his arms, put his hands on them and blessed them. Jesus took the time to welcome children and embrace them because they too need to know about Jesus and that He died on the cross for all of us, even the children. He took a little child and had him stand among them. Taking him in his arms, he said to them, ‘Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me’ (Mark 9:36–37 NET).

Would it not have been wonderful if you had been that child picked up by Jesus? Then should it not be important for us to pick up a child and guide them in the ways of the Lord? Even today, I come before Jesus and ask him to pick me up and embrace me because I want to enter heaven like a little child.

Children are so important for families in America today. Parents are concerned about the well-being of their kids. Many families determine where the best school districts are located before deciding where to purchase their new home and moving into a new community. At the same time, parents are seeking a church that will benefit their children. They eventually find a church that offers quality children’s programs, thus attracting new families and adding to the growth of the church. Now remember that first impressions are very important, and families that are looking for a new church will usually visit the church only once. So every church that is visited gets a one Sunday to make a wow impression. Usually when parents visit the church, the first area they look at is the children’s area. They observe whether the volunteers are loving and caring or not. Parents will look at the hallways, bathrooms, and classrooms for cleanliness and items that promote child safety. Of course, there are several ministries within the church that help in the growth of a church. As increasingly young families are seeking a church, remember they are concerned about the children’s department. When a church wholeheartedly devotes to care for children and teach them the gospel, they become a church that attracts young families.

What is a call? A call implies that we hear a voice from someone from beyond ourselves, beckoning us to listen and act. Have you ever wished that God’s call would be so simple to receive it on your cell phone? Well, it does not work that way, but we do know that God is present and in constant communication with us. God is the one who initiates our relationship, and He continually reaches out to His people all throughout the Bible.

Jesus demonstrated as the Good Shepherd who goes after the lost sheep. Just like Jesus started the calling of His disciples, the best team of servanthood was formed. "As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. ‘Come, follow me,’ Jesus said, ‘and
