Iwant to thank the hardworking folks of Chik-fil-A for being the inspiration to my first chapter.
I want to thank my wife and best friend for helping me type and retype and advise as I tried to put this together.
Introduction
In these pages, you will read of a few incidents from my own life. The statement Mr. Carter, here is your order
is used at the end of each incident, although I only actually experienced it in those exact words in the first one.
My purpose is to answer an often-asked question put to me by sincere folks. In one form or another, they want to know—does God really hear prayers of common folks? Does he care? Will he act on our behalf?
I am convinced that he does! Further, I have experienced this many times. Yet I know that—to use an old mariner’s proverb—yesterday’s wind does not fill the sails of today.
I am simply aware that each time I pray, each time I have a need, I need to know again—that God really has a mechanism in place to meet my every need and that he never fails!
Hopefully, these simple illustrations will encourage you to continue praying and trusting until you also know God answers prayer and never lets it go unheeded when we pray in true faith.
Chapter 1
Mr. Carter, Here’s Your Order
We were in a desperate scramble to get the job done ahead of the painters coming in the next day. My crew was a little rusty because we had been off work due to the crash in ’08. We had worked twenty hours a day the last two days.
It didn’t look like we would get done much sooner today. I thought about calling extra help; but that would cut in on the money so badly needed to meet bills, which had been piling up during layoff. Cold wind blasted through the corridors of the unfinished town houses, blowing sawdust in our eyes and making it that much harder to perform.
Everyone was trying their best, but we were tired, overextended, yet determined to make this work.
I went to buy lunch for the crew and chose a nearby Chik-fil-A. As I entered the building, I found myself in a standing-room-only situation. This location had only recently opened, and they were having their grand opening.
Someone took my order, and I gave my name so they could track it.
Tired, cold, and in a hurry, I had to get control of my attitude. I realized I was probably in for quite a long wait, considering the literal throng of customers around me. I looked at their faces and wondered if anyone here felt as challenged in life as me. Could it be that they also had financial pressures? Were there eager eyes waiting at home, hoping for a break that would keep them from losing the car, the house and—yeah, everything? Were they tempted to be impatient, lashing out at even the smallest slight?
I silently asked God to help me be nice to those around me.
I saw a lady pick up an order in a paper sack at the counter, seemingly miles from where I stood, near the door, in the crowd.
I thought, Lucky her!
She made her way
